Change the Way You See the World
I have just returned from the CLIA | Cruise Lines International Association Expedition Cruising Conference in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. It was an opportunity not to be missed to learn more and to truly understand if and how this sector of the travel industry is responsible travel. My goal was to find out more and truly get under the skin of these voyages, and how to match the right ship with the right travellers who are searching for authentic and meaningful experiences.
For many of us, true wonder has become a rare luxury. As children, we were mesmerised by tides, shifting skies and the smallest signs of wildlife. Over time, routine and responsibility take over, and that effortless sense of discovery fades into the background.A carefully curated expedition journey has the power to bring it back. It does more than take you to remote, impossibly beautiful places, it invites you to experience them with fresh eyes. Pristine landscapes that challenge assumptions, stir the soul, and remind us how much there is still to learn, cherish and protect.
As I witnessed a Humpback Whale breach the water and we approached a stunning glacier, it was a reminder of the fragile beauty of our planet and I must confess I did weep at these incredible sights and my true sense of wonder returned.
DISCOVERY DONE RIGHT
The most reputable expedition operators work within the strict guidelines of leading polar associations and regulatory bodies, including AECO (Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators) and IAATO (International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators). These organisations set some of the highest standards for responsible exploration in the Arctic and Antarctica, championing best practice to protect wildlife, local communities and fragile ecosystems.
On a well‑run expedition voyage, every journey is planned with these principles in mind: careful wildlife‑distancing, controlled numbers ashore, robust biosecurity procedures and a deep respect for local environments. It is how responsible operators safeguard both you and the extraordinary places you visit, helping to ensure they remain unspoiled for generations to come, while you reconnect with that long‑lost feeling of wonder.

On many voyages, guests are also invited to contribute to meaningful research through citizen science projects, from recording wildlife sightings to gathering ocean data alongside scientists. Expedition cruising is often associated with icebergs, penguins and the ends of the earth, but it is so much more than the polar regions. Today’s small‑ship expeditions reach far beyond Antarctica and the Arctic, exploring biodiverse coastlines and island chains across the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific.Think Amazon tributaries where you meet river communities, South Pacific islands where ancestral navigation and storytelling are still alive, or the remote Galapagos, Kimberley and Indonesian archipelagos where geology, wildlife and human history are deeply intertwined. In these places, expert guides and local partners introduce you not only to the landscapes, but also to languages, beliefs, traditions and daily life.
