A 3 Night Hong Kong Stopover: Pandas, Peaks & The Big Buddha
Hong Kong is one of those cities that feels instantly electric: the glittering harbour, the mix of old and new, and the sense that something is happening on every street corner. On my recent 3 night stopover, I wanted to experience the highlights without feeling overwhelmed, and Hong Kong turned out to be a brilliant, easy add on to a longer trip. From wandering the harbourfront of Kowloon to seeing pandas at Ocean Park, gazing over the city from Victoria Peak, and taking the cable car up to the Big Buddha on Lantau Island, it was a stopover full of memorable moments. Here is how I spent my time, and how you could enjoy something similar.
Day 1: Arrival in Kowloon & Harbourfront Wandering
My flight arrived into Hong Kong early in the morning, which meant I had almost a full day ahead of me. After checking into my hotel in Kowloon, freshening up and dropping my bags, I headed straight out to explore.
Getting to Know Kowloon
Kowloon is a fantastic base for a short stay in Hong Kong. It has:
- Easy access to the harbour and ferry terminals
- Countless shops, restaurants and markets
- A real sense of the city’s energy and local life
I spent the day:
- Strolling along the harbourfront, taking in those famous views across Victoria Harbour to Hong Kong Island, with its dramatic skyline and forest of glass towers.
- Orientating myself, working out where the ferries run, where the main shopping streets are, and which areas I wanted to return to in the evenings.
- Soaking up the atmosphere as the city moved from morning light to the neon glow that Hong Kong is so known for.
It was a gentle but fascinating introduction, perfect after an overnight flight: enough to feel you are really there, but at a relaxed pace.
Day 2: Hong Kong Island, Ocean Park Pandas & Victoria Peak
Day 2 was all about crossing the harbour and exploring Hong Kong Island.
Ocean Park & Panda Encounters
In the morning, I used the excellent public transport network to head over to Ocean Park. The journey itself is very straightforward, and a nice way to see a bit more of the city.
The highlight here: seeing the pandas. There is something incredibly special about watching these gentle, charismatic animals, and Ocean Park offers a chance to observe them up close while also learning more about conservation.
As well as the pandas, the park offers:
- Beautiful hilltop views out over the South China Sea
- A mix of animal exhibits and rides, ideal if you are travelling with children or simply enjoy a fun, varied day out
It felt like a complete change of pace from the city streets, yet still very accessible as a day trip.
Victoria Peak: Hong Kong from Above
Later, I made my way to Victoria Peak, travelling by tram to the top. The Peak is one of Hong Kong’s most iconic viewpoints, and it fully lives up to the hype.
From the viewing areas you can see:
- The dense cluster of skyscrapers on Hong Kong Island
- The sweep of Victoria Harbour, dotted with ferries and boats
- Kowloon stretching out on the opposite shore, with green hills beyond
The views are simply breathtaking, and on a clear day you really appreciate how dramatic the city’s setting is, sandwiched between mountains and sea.
Evening Drinks by the Harbour & Ferry Back to Kowloon
After coming back down from the Peak, I returned towards the waterfront for evening drinks by the harbour. Watching the city lights come on and reflect off the water is a quintessential Hong Kong experience.
As night fell, I:
- Enjoyed a drink with harbour views, watching the skyline glow and change before my eyes
- Took in the buzz of people out for the evening, from after‑work locals to fellow travellers
- Then caught the ferry back across to Kowloon, a simple but magical way to end the day, gliding across the dark water with the city sparkling on both sides
The ferry ride is short but atmospheric, and it is one of those small experiences that stays with you.

Day 3: Lantau Island, The Big Buddha & Onward Flight
Departure day did not mean wasting time at the airport. Instead, I made the most of Hong Kong’s brilliant infrastructure.
Downtown Check‑In & Luggage Sorted
First, I used downtown check‑in for my evening flight, which allowed me to:
- Offload my big bags early in the day
- Collect my boarding passes in advance
- Spend my final hours exploring without having to lug luggage around
It is a fantastic option on a stopover, giving you a final day of freedom rather than sitting at the airport.
Lantau Island & The Big Buddha
With my main bags checked in, I caught the train out towards Lantau Island. On arrival, I stored my hand luggage securely so I could explore hands‑free, then boarded the cable car that climbs up to the famous Big Buddha.
The cable car journey itself is a highlight:
- Long stretches over lush green hills and valleys
- Panoramic views of the coastline, mountains and out towards the airport
- A real sense of leaving the city behind and entering a more peaceful, spiritual landscape
At the top, the Tian Tan Buddha, better known as the Big Buddha, is an impressive sight. Set high on a hill, it feels both grand and serene. Climbing the steps up to the base, you can look back over the surrounding peaks and down towards the sea, a wonderful contrast to the dense skyline of Hong Kong Island.
It was a beautiful way to round off my time in Hong Kong: a blend of culture, scenery and a little quiet reflection before the journey ahead.
Evening Flight Departure
After descending by cable car and collecting my hand luggage, it was a straightforward transfer to the airport for my evening onward flight. Thanks to downtown check‑in and the efficient train connections, the day felt like part of the holiday rather than simply a travel day.

Why I Recommend a Hong Kong Stopover
In just three nights, my Hong Kong stopover included:
- Time to settle in and explore the harbourfront and streets of Kowloon
- A full day on Hong Kong Island, including Ocean Park and its pandas, plus the iconic views from Victoria Peak
- Evening drinks by the harbour and a ferry ride back to Kowloon, with the skyline lit up in all its glory
- A final day trip to Lantau Island, including the cable car and visit to the Big Buddha, all neatly fitted around my evening departure
It was the perfect blend of city energy, unique attractions and cultural highlights, all packed into a manageable, well‑paced stopover.
