Swap a rushed Athens stopover for the Athenian Riviera: easy 30‑minute transfers, private pools, sea views and lazy taverna lunches make even a short stay feel like a real Greek holiday.
The Athenian Riviera is one of those places that quietly steals your heart, yet so many travellers overlook it in favour of a night in central Athens before moving on to a cruise or the islands. On our recent trip we based ourselves at Zeus Dolce Athens, just 32 kilometres from the historic centre, and it completely changed how we experienced the city.
We stayed for three nights in an Executive Bungalow Sea View Private Pool room, with wonderful views over the eastern side of Attica and our own pool just steps away. With early flights into Athens, you can genuinely be in the water by lunchtime, and with transfers of around 30 minutes, the whole arrival feels easy and stress free.
Instead of a functional overnight stop, it became a chilled little slice of luxury. We chose half board, which gave us relaxed, no-fuss dinners at the hotel, then wandered out each day to a different local taverna for lunch, enjoying fresh Greek dishes and that slow, timeless seaside atmosphere.
The Athenian Riviera often gets treated as an add-on, but it really deserves to be part of the plan. It offers all the culture of Athens within easy reach, but with sea views, peaceful pools and a resort-style feel that makes even a short stay feel like a proper holiday. For a pre-cruise break or a mini escape in its own right, it is a wonderfully chilled way to begin or end any Greek adventure.
