Southern Wonders Tour of New Zealand with AAT Kings

Andy Flynn on 09 Mar 2026

I was lucky enough to be selected to join AAT Kings on the Southern Wonders tour of the South Island on New Zealand. Over the nine day trip I was lucky enough to see some of the moden wonders of the world. The scenery is truly breathtaking and would love for my clients to experience this one day. Here is a more detailed account of what we experienced on our trip.

Glaciers, Galaxies, and Greenstone: My Unforgettable Journey Through New Zealand’s South Island

There is something transformative about New Zealand’s South Island. I recently wrapped up an epic 2,500km expedition—the Southern Wonders tour—and from the misty fjords of the west to the star-drenched skies of the interior, it was a journey for the soul.

If you’re planning your own escape to Aotearoa, here are the highlights from a trip I’ll never forget.

From the Garden City to the Wild West

Our adventure kicked off in Christchurch, where we traded the city streets for the tracks of the legendary TranzAlpine train. Winding through the Southern Alps is like watching a nature documentary in real-time: think turquoise rivers, jagged gorges, and peaks dusted in fresh powder.

We eventually swapped the rails for the road, heading into Hokitika, the heart of New Zealand’s pounamu (greenstone) heritage. Our ultimate goal? Franz Josef. I had my heart set on a helicopter flight over the ice, but the West Coast weather had other plans. While the flight was grounded for safety, the walk to the glacier viewing platform still delivered. Seeing the scale of the glacier from a distance was a powerful reminder of nature’s beauty, even from the ground!

Queenstown: Cinema, Steamboats, and Syrah

For a Lord of the Rings fan, Queenstown isn’t just a town; it’s Middle-earth come to life. Standing in the actual filming locations while hearing the "behind-the-scenes" stories makes you want to go home and re-watch the trilogy immediately.

Between the adrenaline and the cinema, we slowed down for the finer things:

  • The Wine Cave: Tasting our way through 100+ local spirits and wines right in the heart of town.
  • The TSS Earnslaw: Crossing Lake Whakatipu on this historic steamship felt like stepping back in time. We docked at Walter Peak High Country Farm for a gourmet BBQ dinner that ended with a brilliant display of farm dog skill.

The Magic of the Deep South: Milford Sound & Glowworms

Leaving Queenstown, we tracked south toward Te Anau. Pro tip: Don't miss the Mirror Lakes on the way—the reflections are so crisp you’ll have to flip your phone to see which way is up.

Passing through the Homer Tunnel (a hand-carved marvel of engineering) leads you into the crown jewel: Milford Sound. Cruising through the fjord, dwarfed by sheer cliffs and thundering waterfalls, you truly understand why this is a world-renowned wonder.

The day didn't end at sunset, though. We headed into the Te Anau Glowworm Caves, drifting in silence under a subterranean "galaxy" of tiny bioluminescent lights. Pure magic.

Coastal Charm and the Steepest Streets

Our route to Dunedin took us through Gore—home of the legendary Southland cheese roll (don't knock it until you try it!). Once in Dunedin, we admired the Flemish-style architecture of the railway station before testing our cardio on Baldwin Street, the world's steepest residential road.

The wildlife here is just as impressive as the hills. A sunset cruise introduced us to Royal Albatross, Little Blue Penguins, and seals.

Star-Gazing in Omarama

As we circled back north toward Omarama, we stopped in Oamaru, a town that feels like a Victorian time capsule. After a seaside lunch and a stop at the massive Benmore Dam, we arrived in the "high country" just in time for the main event: the sky. With zero light pollution, the Milky Way felt close enough to touch.

A Final Farewell at Lake Tekapo

On our final day, we made a pilgrimage to the turquoise waters of Lake Tekapo. A visit to the Dark Sky Project put our celestial sightings into perspective before we headed through Geraldine for one last group photo.

Final Reflections

Traveling 2,500km across this country changes you. We started as a group of travellers and ended as a whānau (family). New Zealand doesn’t just show you beautiful views; it invites you to be part of them.
