A Bank Holiday Escape to Paleros and Lefkada
There’s nothing quite like returning to a part of the world you already know and love, and this bank holiday weekend gave us the perfect excuse to head back to beautiful western Greece.

Parga BeachThe main reason for our visit was to spend a few days with
our son Jack, who is working at Neilson's Vounaki Beachclub in Paleros this summer. Having
previously sailed around this stunning part of the Ionian, it was wonderful to
be back, but this time we swapped the boat for a hire car and explored the area
from a completely different perspective.
Vounaki itself is a fantastic choice for active families. Set between the Acarnanian Mountains and the clear blue waters of the Ionian, the resort offers an incredible range of activities. Guests can enjoy dinghy sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, paddle boarding, cycling, tennis and fitness classes. There are also two swimming pools, a children’s pool, a yacht marina and children’s clubs for ages 2 to 17. Many of the activities and tuition are included, making it particularly easy for families to try something new together.
Paleros itself has a lovely, laid-back atmosphere, with waterfront tavernas and beautiful views across the Ionian. It makes a great base for exploring this lesser-known corner of Greece.
With Jack having some time off, we headed across to Lefkada, an island with the unusual advantage of being connected to the mainland by a bridge. We enjoyed wandering around Lefkada Town, browsing the shops and soaking up the relaxed Greek atmosphere.
We also visited Mytikas, another charming coastal spot overlooking the nearby islands. From here, you can hop aboard a ferry or sea taxi and head across to islands such as Kalamos and Kastos, perfect for a day of exploring, swimming and enjoying lunch in a traditional waterfront taverna. Having previously sailed around these beautiful islands ourselves, it was lovely to be back looking out across such a familiar stretch of the Ionian.
One of the highlights, and certainly the coldest! 🥶, was our visit to the Acheron River at Glyki. Surrounded by spectacular scenery, we walked through the incredibly clear and incredibly chilly water. Definitely an experience I won’t forget in a hurry!
Having now explored this region both by land and by sea, I can genuinely say it’s a wonderful choice for anyone looking for a more authentic side of Greece, with beautiful scenery, crystal-clear waters, traditional towns and plenty of opportunities for adventure.
