Exploring Scotland’s Wild Isles with National Geographic Lindblad Expeditions
There are some journeys that stay with you forever and this National Geographic–Lindblad Expeditions voyage around Scotland’s Wild Isles was undoubtedly one of them. From dramatic cliffs and remote islands to unforgettable wildlife encounters and magical nights under the stars, this expedition was the perfect blend of adventure, discovery and luxury. Over seven incredible days, we explored some of the most remote and breathtaking corners of Scotland and beyond, many only accessible by expedition ship.
Day 1 – Embarking on the Adventure- From the moment we stepped onboard, there was an undeniable sense of excitement. Fresh sea air, rugged coastlines and the promise of adventure ahead — it immediately felt like this was going to be something truly special. The crew were incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable, and after settling into our cabins and meeting fellow travellers, we enjoyed our first expedition briefing outlining the journey ahead: remote islands, fascinating wildlife and hidden corners of Scotland that few people ever get to experience. If day one was anything to go by, we were in for an unforgettable expedition.
Day 2 – Marwick Head & a Taste of Scotland - Our first full day took us to the dramatic cliffs of Orkney for the unforgettable Marwick Head hike. The scenery was spectacular — sweeping coastal views, seabird colonies soaring overhead and the kind of raw, untamed beauty that makes Scotland so captivating. One of the highlights was reaching the Kitchener Memorial, perched high above the Atlantic with endless ocean stretching before us.And just when we thought the day couldn’t get any better, we returned for a traditional whisky tasting onboard The perfect warming end to an incredible day exploring Scotland’s wild coastline.
Day 3 – Mull Head &Sunset at the Broch of Mousa- Day three brought another spectacular adventure with the Mull Head loop walk. This stretch of coastline was completely breathtaking — rugged cliffs, hidden geo formations and endless dramatic scenery that made us stop every few minutes simply to take it all in.Later that evening, we experienced one of the most magical moments of the expedition: sunset at the Broch of Mousa. Watching the golden light fall across this ancient, perfectly preserved Iron Age tower felt incredibly peaceful and atmospheric.Scotland truly knows how to put on a show.
Day 4 – Reaching the Edge of the UK- One of the most surreal moments of the journey came as we passed Out Stack, which is officially the northernmost point of the United Kingdom. Soon after, we arrived at Unst, the UK’s northernmost inhabited island. With dramatic cliffs, endless sea views and glorious sunshine, the scenery felt more reminiscent of the Norwegian fjords than Scotland. We spent the morning exploring the incredible Hermaness National Nature Reserve, one of the UK’s most spectacular wildlife sites. The reserve is home to huge seabird colonies, and at this time of year the cliffs are alive with puffins, gannets, guillemots and skuas.A boardwalk hike across peat moorland led us to jaw-dropping cliff edges overlooking the crashing North Atlantic below; wild, remote and completely unspoilt. That evening, the experience shifted from adventure to indulgence as we enjoyed the tasting menu at Charlie’s restaurant onboard, complete with cocktails and wine pairings. And long after most guests had gone to bed, I wrapped up in blankets and headed to the top deck hoping to catch a meteor shower beneath the vast northern skies. No shooting stars that evening , but still an incredibly peaceful and memorable moment.
Day 5 – Zodiac Cruising the Shiants & Meteor Showers at Sea - Sometimes the best expedition moments happen unexpectedly. Thanks to incredible weather conditions, the itinerary changed at the last minute and we headed for the breathtaking Shiant Islands for a Zodiac cruise — something even the onboard naturalists were visibly excited about.Towering cliffs, abundant wildlife and untouched landscapes made this one of the most memorable experiences of the voyage.Later in the day, we visited Inverewe Gardens, a complete contrast to the rugged islands we’d been exploring. Surprisingly tropical for Scotland, the gardens felt like a hidden oasis filled with vibrant colours and exotic plants. But the real magic came late that evening. At 10pm, wrapped in blankets on the top deck with hot chocolate in hand, we watched the Lyrid meteor shower streak across the night sky Endless stars, complete stillness and shooting lights overhead, one of those travel moments you never forget.
Day 6 – Kayaking Skye & Sleeping in an Igloo - Day six was nothing short of magical. We started the morning kayaking at Talisker Beach on the Isle of Skye, paddling beneath dramatic cliffs with crashing waves and fresh sea air all around us.Later, we ventured deep into Loch Coruisk for a two-hour Zodiac excursion surrounded by the towering Black Cuillin mountains. Seals lounged lazily on rocks while seabirds circled overhead, pure wilderness at its finest. And then came one of the most unique experiences of the entire expedition…That evening, I had the opportunity to spend the night in the igloo aboard Endurance. After dinner and a soak in the hot tub beneath the open sky, I snuggled into bed with a hot water bottle while surrounded by the silence of the sea.An unforgettable way to end another incredible day.
Day 7 – Rathlin Island & Farewell to the Wild Isles - Our final day brought us to Rathlin Island, the northernmost point of Ireland and home to a small but vibrant community of around 140 residents. It felt like the perfect final stop for this remarkable journey. Back onboard, the atmosphere became more reflective as guests shared stories, photographs and favourite moments from the expedition over a relaxed lunch at sea. That evening, we gathered for the Captain’s farewell cocktails and our final dinner onboard, the perfect ending to an extraordinary week of adventure.
Why This Expedition Was So Special - What makes National Geographic–Lindblad Expeditions different is the balance between exploration, education and comfort. This wasn’t simply a cruise, it was an immersive experience led by passionate naturalists and experts, allowing us to truly connect with the landscapes, wildlife and culture of these remote regions. From Zodiac landings and guided hikes to wildlife encounters and stargazing from the deck, every day felt thoughtfully curated and genuinely unforgettable.
