My Honest Review: Sailing Spanish Serenity to French Daydreams on Virgin Voyages’ Valiant Lady
In June I stepped on board Virgin Voyages’ Valiant Lady for the Spanish Serenity to French Daydreams itinerary, sailing from 14–20 June, and I came home completely converted to the Virgin way of cruising. This is not a traditional cruise. It is cool, playful, adults only and has a real “week away with your favourite people” energy. If you like your holidays with a bit of a buzz, read on.
The Vibe On Board
From the moment we sailed, the atmosphere on Valiant Lady really stood out.
This is a ship where you can absolutely party if you want to. There is music, a great bar scene and plenty of places to stay up late, but it still feels stylish rather than rowdy. Being adults only makes a big difference: it has a relaxed, grown-up feel, with lots of couples, small groups and solo travellers all mixing together really naturally.
The entertainment in the bars was one of my highlights. We listened to some genuinely fabulous singers and live music acts that gave the evenings a proper “night out” feel, without ever having to leave the ship.
Dining Highlights: So Much More Than a Buffet
One thing Virgin Voyages does exceptionally well is food. There is no main dining room and no buffet in the traditional sense: instead, you choose from a collection of individual restaurants, each with its own style and personality. A few of my favourites:
Gunbae
Gunbae is such a fun, sociable experience. It is Korean barbecue with a twist, and the layout means you end up chatting with the people around you. We met some fantastic fellow sailors here, and it turned into one of the most memorable evenings of the cruise. Expect interactive drinking games, sizzling plates and a really lively atmosphere.
The Wake
The Wake is all about elegant, grown-up dining. Think beautiful views over the ship’s wake (hence the name), a stylish setting and a more refined feel. It is a lovely choice for a date night or a special meal during your sailing.
The Test Kitchen
The Test Kitchen is pure theatre. It feels part restaurant, part culinary show, with creative dishes and a tasting‑menu style approach. If you enjoy something a bit experimental and love talking about your food, this is an experience you will really remember.
Shows & Nightlife: Misbehave & Scarlet Night
Virgin’s entertainment is bold, different and sometimes a little cheeky.
Misbehave Show
The Misbehave show is very funny and well worth seeing, but it definitely comes with a warning: it is not one for the easily offended. Expect humour that pushes the boundaries and a few jaw‑dropping moments. If you like edgy, adult comedy, you will love it.
Scarlet Night
Scarlet Night deserves its own paragraph. This is Virgin’s signature party night on board and it is genuinely something special. The whole ship transforms, everyone is dressed in red and there are performances, music and surprises popping up in different areas.
My best advice: embrace it and get amongst it. I have been to some great parties over the years, but Scarlet Night really was something else. If you go in with an open mind and a sense of fun, it will be one of the standout memories of your cruise.
Who Is Valiant Lady Perfect For?
From my experience on this sailing, here is who I think Virgin Voyages – and specifically this style of itinerary – is ideal for:
Couples who like to have fun
Perfect if you enjoy good food, late nights, live music and meeting new people, mixed with time to relax by the pool or explore ports by day.
Solo travellers
I was really impressed by how well Virgin caters for solos. The vibe is friendly and social, and there are plenty of opportunities to join in, from hosted activities to shared tables in places like Gunbae.
Groups of friends
This would be such a good option for a hen or stag, a big birthday or a “just because” friends’ trip. With the adults‑only policy, fun dining, bars and Scarlet Night, it ticks a lot of boxes for a celebration at sea.
If you are looking for a quiet, traditional cruise with very formal evenings, this probably is not the right fit. But if you like the idea of a stylish, adults‑only, contemporary cruise where you can eat brilliantly, see great entertainment and let your hair down, Valiant Lady might surprise you in the best possible way.
