Move Over, Italy: Why Slovenia Needs to Be on Your Summer Travel Radar

Move Over, Italy: Why Slovenia Needs to Be on Your Summer Travel Radar

Danielle Paradise on 06 Aug 2026

If your social media feed looks anything like mine right now, it’s a non-stop parade of packed Italian beaches, long queues in Dubrovnik, and tourists fighting for a photo spot in Santorini.

Don't get me wrong, I love the European classics, but if your idea of a dream summer holiday involves breathing room, pristine nature, and a touch of whimsy without the heavy crowds, it’s time to look somewhere completely different.

This brings me nicely on to Slovenia.

Nestled right between Italy, Austria, and Croatia, this tiny green country is easily one of the most underrated summer destinations in Europe. It has all the charm of the Mediterranean and the Alps combined, but with a fraction of the tourists…and I shouldn’t tell you this, but it’s a much friendlier price tag too!

So here is why Slovenia deserves a spot on your travel bucket list this summer:

1. Lake Bled (Without the Lake Como Crowds)

You’ve probably seen pictures of a fairy-tale church sitting on a tiny island in the middle of an emerald-green lake. That’s Lake Bled. It looks like something straight out of a storybook. You can row a traditional pletna boat out to the island, ring the wishing bell, and eat a slice of Bled cream cake by the water. It gives you all the romantic, high-end vibes of Lake Como, but with a much more relaxed, laid-back atmosphere.

2. The Greenest Capital in Europe

Ljubljana (pronounced Loo-bee-ah-nah… just so you can show off your pronunciation!) is Slovenia’s capital, and it might just be the most charming city you’ll ever visit. The entire city centre is completely car-free, meaning you can wander past outdoor cafes, cross the famous Dragon Bridge, and sit by the river with a glass of local wine in total peace. It has a youthful, vibrant, outdoor culture that makes summer evenings feel like a dream.

3. Emerald Rivers and Alpine Adventures

For anyone who loves a bit of nature, the Soča Valley is a showstopper. The water is a bright, piercing turquoise colour that doesn't even look real. Travellers here do white-water rafting, hike through the Triglav National Park, or simply drive through the breathtaking mountain passes; it’s basically an outdoor lover's paradise!

The Travel Pro Verdict

Slovenia is the perfect destination for couples wanting a romantic escape, families looking for an active holiday, or anyone who is simply tired of fighting the crowds in Western Europe.

If you want to skip the stressful planning and get a bespoke Slovenia itinerary mapped out just for you, then I’d love to piece together the perfect itinerary for you.
