Christmas in Mauritius: Sunshine, Festive Fun and Family Time

Christmas in Mauritius: a little introduction

This pocket of paradise in the Indian Ocean is a wonderful all‑year‑round destination, and it feels especially magical at Christmas. There are certain areas to avoid in the summer months due to the wind, so do take advice, but if you are thinking about spending Christmas in Mauritius you are in for a treat.

Mauritius often gets confused with the Maldives. Whilst both are in the Indian Ocean, they are very different destinations. Mauritius is known for its glorious beaches, lagoons and coral reefs, but the island also has rainforests, hiking trails, waterfalls, a dormant volcano, national parks and much more, so it really suits couples, families and multi‑gen groups.

Getting to Mauritius for Christmas

There are direct flights from London and indirect options from most regional airports. We flew from Birmingham via Dubai, which makes an excellent twin centre holiday if you want a city stopover. Another great idea is Mauritius twinned with a safari in South Africa.

The airport is in the south of the island. We stayed in the north and the transfer was only around an hour. The scenery on the drive to our resort was incredible, with breath‑taking views that gave us a real sense of the island before we even checked in.

Staying at Beachcomber Victoria, Mauritius

We stayed on the north‑west coast at Beachcomber Victoria resort. I knew it would be beautiful, however it exceeded all expectations. It is a 4‑star resort with 5‑star service, which makes it perfect for relaxed, high‑quality Mauritius Christmas holidays.

We opted for all inclusive and could dine in either the buffet or à la carte restaurants. The buffet restaurant was unlike any buffet I had seen: waiter service for drinks, beautifully decorated tables and outstanding food. There was even lobster and fillet steak, so rethink any pre‑conceived ideas about buffets.

The Italian restaurant was our favourite; we spent many afternoons with a bottle of rosé, admiring the view after eating some of the best Italian cuisine we have had on holiday. There is also a fish restaurant in a stunning beachfront setting, especially atmospheric in the warm evenings around Christmas and New Year.

Adults only and family areas

Victoria also has an adults only area, with both swim‑up and ocean‑view rooms. It is separate from the main resort, which is very family‑orientated, and has its own adults only pool, bar and restaurant. Guests here can also enjoy all the facilities in the main resort, so you really do get the best of both worlds: peaceful adult space plus the option of more atmosphere and activities when you want it.

Family‑friendly facilities

There is a supervised kids’ club in a shaded area on the beach, as well as a teen club, which is ideal if you are considering Mauritius holidays at Christmas with older children. The all inclusive package incorporates a wide range of water sports, including water‑skiing, paddle‑boarding, small sail boats, kayaks and glass‑bottom boat trips. There are also lots of land sports and fitness classes. There is no reason to get bored here, even on a longer festive stay.

We stayed in a couple of different room types and I also viewed all categories, so I can advise on the right option depending on whether you are travelling as a couple, a family with young children, or with teens and grandparents.

Exploring Mauritius

The island really lends itself to exploration. A tour of the south is a must. Do not miss Chamarel, where you can learn how the rum is made and get the opportunity to sample it. The Seven Coloured Earth is a natural phenomenon and another must‑see.

A catamaran trip can be enjoyed from both the north and south coast and you might be lucky enough to see dolphins. If shopping is your thing, you can easily reach beautiful areas such as Port Louis, Le Morne and Grand Baie for a change of scene from the resort.

Christmas in Mauritius

My son was initially reluctant to break tradition and swap our usual UK celebrations for Christmas in Mauritius. His big question was: “Will it feel like Christmas?” It absolutely did, just without the cold and dark.

The hotel was decorated beautifully, with Christmas trees on the beach, which was a completely new experience for us. We had an amazing Christmas meal (yes, there was turkey), carol singers, a live band playing Christmas music, fireworks and a visit from the big man himself, with a gift for each family.

We left behind Covid worries, wet and cold weather and rising fuel bills for a much more relaxing environment where we all felt like we truly switched off. Would we spend Christmas in Mauritius again? In a heartbeat.

Why book Mauritius for Christmas with me

I have booked many Mauritius holidays for couples and families of all ages, as well as experiencing it myself at Christmas. While I was there I visited many hotels around the island, so I can advise on the right option for you, whether you are looking for an all inclusive Christmas holiday in Mauritius, an adults only escape or a family‑friendly resort with great kids’ facilities.

If you are curious about what Christmas in Mauritius could look like for your family, I would love to share ideas and tailor a trip that feels special, stress‑free and completely “you”.
