5 Blissful Days in Monchique: Mountain Air, Ocean Views and Algarve Flavours

Monchique in the Algarve is a peaceful hilltop retreat of eucalyptus forests, big views and incredible food. My five days here blended spa time, hiking, adventure and coastal exploring.

Tucked away in the lush Serra de Monchique, yet within easy reach of the Algarve’s golden coastline, Monchique was the perfect base for our recent five‑day escape to Portugal. We stayed at the beautiful Monchique Resort & Spa, a hillside haven with panoramic views across the mountains and all the way down to the coast. Waking up, drawing the curtains and being greeted by layers of green hills and big skies from our room was a highlight in itself. The hotel has a real wellness focus, with Pilates, stretching, yoga and HIIT classes available, so you can be as zen or as energised as you like during your stay.

Food, wine and those Algarve flavours

The Algarve is heaven for food lovers and Monchique certainly did not disappoint. Fresh grilled sardines, crisp salads and silky pastéis de nata quickly became regulars on our table. I fell a little bit in love with Vinho Verde too: light, fresh and perfect with seafood after a day in the sun.

One of the real stand‑out meals of the trip was at Café Vintage in Monchique, a cosy spot serving some of the best tapas I have ever tasted. Think tender octopus, flavourful tuna, melt‑in‑the‑mouth beef and a selection of small plates that make it impossible to choose a favourite. It is well worth planning an evening there if you are staying nearby.

We also enjoyed an unforgettable lunch at a seafood restaurant in Zambujeira do Mar, a scenic coastal village perched dramatically on the Alentejo cliffs. Amazing fresh fish, Atlantic views and that laid‑back Portuguese pace of life made it a real pinch‑me moment.

Exploring Monchique and beyond

Monchique itself feels a world away from the busier coastal resorts. The hills are dotted with eucalyptus and cork trees, while orange and lemon groves add pops of colour and fragrance as you explore. It is a wonderful area for walking, and one of the most memorable outings was hiking to the Passadiços wooden walkways and suspension bridge. Following the raised paths through the landscape, then stepping out onto the suspension bridge with views across the valley, was a real highlight of the trip and a fantastic way to soak up the mountain scenery.

To ramp up the adventure, we joined a buggy tour with Silves Outdoor Tours, bouncing along off‑road tracks through the mountains and rivers. It was dusty, exhilarating and such a fun way to see a different side of the region.

We also used Monchique as a springboard for some classic Algarve days out:

Lagos for a stroll along the promenade, pretty streets and a relaxed seaside vibe.

Silves to wander the old town, explore the castle and, naturally, stop for a pastel de nata or two.

And further up the coast, an unforgettable seafood lunch in Zambujeira do Mar, perched on dramatic cliffs along the Alentejo coast, rounded things off perfectly.

Is 5 days enough?

For us, five days felt ample to explore the area at a relaxed pace. We managed to mix wellness, adventure, great food and a few coastal day trips without ever feeling rushed. If you are staying longer, I would recommend hiring a car so you can explore even more of the Algarve and Alentejo coastline in your own time.

If you are dreaming of a short break that combines fresh mountain air, incredible food, coastal day trips and a focus on wellbeing, Monchique is a fantastic choice.
