Staying Safe from Cyber Crime While on Holiday – in conjunction with Lancashire Constabulary and me!
Heading off on holiday?
Once your holiday is booked (by me of course…!) Don’t let cyber criminals ruin your break. They never take any time off and are always looking for an opportunity. So, as you relax and let your hair down and let the cares of your world melt away, they are looking for opportunities. So here are some simple steps that will help you stay protected.
Before you go.... (don’t forget your passports and any visas but also......)
- Update your devices Install the latest security updates on phones, tablets, and laptops
- Use strong, unique Passwords or Passkeys On ALL your accounts as per NCSC advice – Consider a password manager, it will help.
- Enable 2-factor authentication (2FA/2SV) - Add this on important accounts where you cannot set up a Passkey
- Back up your data before you go - So all you photos, contacts, and files are safe in the cloud or however you back up your data
While You’re Away.... (Of course staying safe in the sun using sunscreen, wearing a hat and hydrating, but also....)
- Avoid public Wi-Fi for sensitive activities – Don’t access banking or shopping on unsecured networks, always look for the padlock
– Use a VPN Subscribe to a VPN so that ALL your internet traffic
is direct through that onto the hotel / public Wi-Fi. This makes the hotel and
any other public Wi-Fi a bit safer to use. If travelling with family don’t
forget to add them to your VPN.
- Always try and use your 5G data For any banking or other financial work you may need to do, it is the safest way!
- Be cautious of charging stations (juice jacking) Use your own charger (plugging it into the wall) or a portable power bank. If you need to use a USB then ensure you have a data blocker on your charging cable.
- Turn off Bluetooth & Wi-Fi when not in use Prevents unwanted connections
Social Media Safety.... (You are on holiday, why not give it and your device a break, go on you may find you like it???)
Don’t overshare your location in real-time
– Wait until you’re home to post holiday photos
Avoid announcing your home is empty
– Criminals can use this information
Secure your Social Media accounts
-Put a PASSKEY on all your Social Media accounts
Some fraud stuff that raises its head at holiday time
- Be cautious of heavily discounted travel, excursions or accommodation offered in person or unofficial sellers.
- Always book through a reputable company and check reviews before paying.
- Don't trust images of Hotels or apartments that you see online. They can easily be generated through AI.
- Use a secure payment rather than paying in cash or by bank transfer. A credit card can offer protection under section 75 of the credit card act.
- Research your seller thoroughly don't be rushed by a limited time offer and look for ABTA, ATOL on the company’s website
