A Slice of Island Paradise: My Stay at Canonnier Beachcomber, Mauritius
Here’s a peek into my experience: what dazzled me, what surprised me, and what I’d absolutely return for.
Arrival & First Impressions
Landing in Mauritius already feels like stepping into a dream. The drive to Canonnier from the airport winds through lush greenery, and you sense the pace instantly slows. The resort sits at Pointe aux Canonnier, just a few minutes from the lively Grand Baie area.
Walking into the grounds, I was struck by the mix of tropical gardens, colonial-style architecture, and sea views. Everywhere you turn — from the coral-colored walls to the leafy walkways — there’s a sense that nature and design coexist in harmony.
Accommodation & Comfort
The rooms at Canonnier are elegant yet comfortable, evoking colonial charm with modern touches. I stayed in a sea-facing room, and waking up to gentle sunlight over the Indian Ocean was unforgettable.
Spacious balconies, airy interiors, and thoughtful touches (local artwork, warm lighting, good AC) made every moment in the room a restful one.
Food & Dining
The resort offers three restaurants, each with a different ambiance and cuisine:
Navigator: Best for sunset views and Mauritian-inspired dishes.
Le Frangipanier: The main restaurant for varied buffets.
La Serenata: Italian flavours for cozy evenings.
One highlight was watching the sky turn gold at Navigator while sipping a tropical cocktail — one of those moments you lock away forever.
Activities & Leisure
What makes Canonnier stand out is the blend of adventure and relaxation.
🏖️ Sea & Sand
The resort has two beaches with clear turquoise waters — perfect for snorkelling, kayaking, or simply floating in calm lagoons.
🤿 Diving & Marine Life
One of the most unforgettable moments of the trip was going diving off the reef. The visibility was incredible, with vibrant coral gardens and swirls of tropical fish. The highlight? Coming face to face with a huge sea turtle gliding gracefully through the water. It felt like time stood still.
🌿 Spa in a Banyan Tree
A true highlight: the treehouse-style spa built into the branches of a century-old banyan tree. I treated myself to a massage there — surrounded by birdsong and rustling leaves, it felt magical.
🐎 Horse Riding on the Beach
One of my most memorable days was horse riding along the shoreline. The views of the ocean from horseback were pure freedom — something I’ll never forget.
🌋 Adventures Beyond the Resort
I also explored Mauritius beyond Canonnier:
Port Louis: An afternoon wandering markets, street food stalls, and the colourful waterfront.
Chamarel Seven Coloured Earths & Giant Tortoises: A surreal landscape and a chance to meet the island’s slow-moving legends.
Trou aux Cerfs Crater: A natural volcanic formation with sweeping island views.
Zip-lining: For a rush of adrenaline through lush green valleys.
Day Trips to Sister Resorts
One perk of staying at Canonnier is that you can use the facilities of other Beachcomber resorts. We spent full days at:
Mauricia Beachcomber: Lively atmosphere, right in the heart of Grand Baie. Great for people-watching and watersports.
Victoria Beachcomber: Known for its long sunset beach and relaxed vibe. Watching the sky blaze orange over the horizon there was breathtaking.
It felt like getting three holidays in one!
