Tips for More Sustainable Travel

Gemma Parker on 17 Sept 2026

If you’re heading off on a well‑earned holiday, especially a long‑haul trip, you might not feel that you can claim you are travelling sustainably. But there are plenty of ways you can help reduce negative impacts of tourism in your destination, support local communities and ultimately make your trip more rewarding. Small changes really do add up. If every traveller made a few thoughtful choices, the difference would be huge. Here are some simple, practical ideas you (and your suitcase) can carry with you on your next adventure!

Before you go

1. Pack lighter

Less weight on the plane equals lower emissions per passenger so it helps to choose a capsule wardrobe and items you can mix and match, rather than packing “just in case”.

2. Bring reusables

Reusable shopping bag: Plastic bags are still common in many countries. A lightweight tote or fold‑up bag means you can say no to single‑use plastic.

Reusable water bottle: Even if you cannot drink tap water, you can often refill from large containers or hotel water stations instead of buying multiple small bottles.

Reusable coffee cup: Great for airport coffees and takeaways; many cups are collapsible and pack down small.

At your hotel or apartment

3. Use air conditioning mindfully.

Switch off air con, lights and electronics when you leave the room. Set a comfortable temperature instead of very cold, and use eco modes or timers where possible.

4. Take shorter showers.

Water scarcity is a real issue in many destinations. Keep showers short, and turn off the tap while you soap up or brush your teeth.

Support local communities

5. Support local businesses.

Buy souvenirs from local makers, markets and independent shops so your money directly benefits local people

6. Where possible, choose locally run tours and guides.

7. East locally:

Try locally owned cafes, food stalls and restaurants rather than only international chains.Consider choosing a vegetarian or plant‑based meal some of the time as these usually have a lower environmental footprint and are often delicious.

Respecting people, places and wildlife

8. Respect local culture and communities.

Learn a few words of the local language and be mindful of local customs.Dress appropriately for temples and sacred sites, and always ask before taking someone’s photo.

9. Avoid negative impact on wildlife and the natural world.

Avoid attractions that exploit animals (for example, performances, riding, or forced photo opportunities). Stick to marked paths, do not remove shells, coral or plants, and never feed wild animals or fish.

10. Reduce waste wherever you can, and of course always take your litter away with you!
