Lake Bled: Like Stepping into a Postcard

We arrived at Lake Bled early afternoon and, even in the heat, I was taken aback by how striking it was. The colour of the lake almost does not look real: an unreal blue-green that shifts with the light, framed by forested hills and that picture-perfect island church in the middle.

We started simply, with a gentle walk around the lake. It is an easy loop but every few steps you are tempted to stop for another photo. My daughter and I kept saying, “OK, this is the best view,” only to turn a corner and find an even better one.

The next morning brought a bit more adrenaline. We took the chair lift up to the toboggan run high above the lake. I am not great with heights, so as we glided up I could feel my nerves jangling. At the top, though, we climbed into the toboggans and off we went. I screamed the whole way down, my daughter laughed the whole way down, and at the bottom we both agreed it was enormous fun.

Bells, Blessings and a Refreshing Swim

That afternoon we did something a little more traditional. We boarded a wooden pletna boat and glided across to the famous island in the middle of Lake Bled. Climbing the steps up to the church with the heat of the day all around us felt almost ceremonial in itself.

Back down at the water’s edge, the heat finally got the better of us and we headed for a swim. Slipping into the cool, clear water of Lake Bled was bliss. After a day of bright sunshine, it felt incredibly refreshing and gave us a completely different perspective of the lake and mountains.

Hiking, Rowing and Evenings by the Water

The next day we ventured out to Vintgar Gorge. The walk through the gorge is stunning: emerald water rushing beneath wooden walkways, sheer rock faces, shady stretches and shafts of sunlight cutting through. It is an easy enough route but feels wonderfully wild, and we finished with a short hike that made us feel like we had really earned our lunch.

Back at Lake Bled later on, we hired a little rowing boat for a few hours. There is something wonderfully peaceful about being out on the water, just the two of you drifting across that incredible turquoise surface. Plus she did the rowing, which was rather relaxing!

Our evenings were spent down by the lakefront, where outdoor restaurants and bars create a relaxed, holiday atmosphere. Live music floated across the water, people strolled by with ice creams, and we lingered over simple, tasty meals. Some days we had picnics during the day, then treated ourselves to ice creams and relaxed dinners in the evenings.

From Slovenia to Italy by Local Bus

When it was time to move on, we packed up and took the local bus to Ljubljana, then connected onwards to Trieste. It felt very straightforward and gave us a little glimpse of Slovenia’s capital en route, before crossing the border into Italy.

Trieste: Imperial Grandeur by the Sea

Our base in Trieste was very central, just off the main piazza. Piazza Unità d’Italia really is glorious: grand facades, beautiful architecture and, at the edge of it all, the open Adriatic Sea. It feels both elegant and relaxed, and at night the square has a wonderful atmosphere with people gathering outside cafés and restaurants.

One of our favourite outings from Trieste was to Miramare Castle. Sitting proudly on a rocky outcrop above the sea, the castle looks like something from a fairytale, and the surrounding gardens are beautifully kept. We spent our time wandering through the rooms and then exploring the grounds, enjoying the sea breeze and the views back towards the city.

Evenings in Trieste quickly settled into a very enjoyable pattern: delicious food in different local restaurants, a gentle buzz in the streets and that unmistakable Italian passion for good food, good wine and good conversation. There is a warmth to the city that you feel as you sit at an outdoor table watching the world go by.

Cool Air and Caverns at Grotta Gigante

With temperatures soaring, we also treated ourselves to a very literal cool-down at Grotta Gigante, just outside Trieste. This enormous underground cave is said to be one of the largest tourist caves in the world, and stepping inside felt like entering a different universe.

The temperature drops as you descend, and suddenly you are surrounded by soaring rock formations, stalactites and stalagmites that have been growing in silence for thousands of years. It was fascinating, otherworldly and a very welcome break from the summer heat.

Simply Wandering

Some of our best memories, though, came from the simplest moments. We spent time just wandering the little streets, dipping in and out of boutique shops, pausing for coffee or gelato, and strolling around the lovely marina area. There is a sense of Trieste as a crossroads of cultures, and you really feel that as you move between the waterfront, the historic centre and the quieter backstreets.

Why I Would Recommend This Trip

Looking back, it felt like the perfect blend of adventure, culture and relaxation.

• Lake Bled gave us that fairytale, outdoorsy feel: swimming, rowing, gentle hiking, a dash of adrenaline and plenty of time to just sit by the water.
• Trieste added a coastal Italian flourish: grand squares, seaside walks, beautiful architecture, incredible food and those easy, meandering evenings that feel endlessly summery.
• The heat was intense at times, but that almost became part of the story: early walks, refreshing swims, shady gorges, cool caves and long, balmy nights.
