Small Ship, Big Heart: What I Loved About Sailing on Seabourn Ovation
5 nights of pure relaxation
I have just returned from a five night sailing on Seabourn Ovation and it has firmly confirmed why this style of small-ship luxury cruising is such a great fit for many of my clients. Sailing from Rouen to Dover at the end of April, with calls into Plymouth, Portland and Portsmouth, I experienced first-hand what life is really like on board: relaxed yet luxurious, sociable yet never crowded, and wonderfully easy thanks to the inclusive nature of the cruise.

First Impressions: Luxury Without the Intimidation
I boarded Seabourn Ovation in Rouen on 27 April 2026 and, from the moment I stepped on, I was struck by how warm and welcoming the atmosphere felt. Seabourn has a reputation as a luxury cruise line, so I half-expected it to feel very formal or “posh”.
Instead, I was greeted with genuine smiles, an effortless embarkation process and a glass of something chilled within minutes. Guests and crew alike were friendly and happy to chat. It felt elegant, yes, but never stuffy or intimidating.
If you like the idea of luxury but worry it might feel a bit “too much”, this is exactly the kind of ship that will put you at ease.
My Veranda Suite: A Comfortable Home at Sea
For this sailing I stayed in a Veranda Suite. It offered plenty of space, a comfortable seating area and a private balcony where I could sit with a coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening and simply watch the sea drift by.
My suite was kept beautifully by my steward, who somehow always appeared at just the right time, without ever feeling intrusive. The service felt personal and genuine, which set the tone for the whole trip. I nice surprise was the huge bathroom with a twin sink, big shower and a full size bath all with Molton Brown products to use as freely as I liked.
Service That Truly Stands Out
The single biggest highlight of my time on Seabourn Ovation was the service. Every member of staff I met, from bar staff and restaurant teams to housekeeping, was warm, approachable and genuinely keen to make sure I was enjoying myself.
Nothing felt scripted or forced. The crew learned preferences quickly, remembered drinks orders, and were always happy to stop for a chat. Walking around the ship, I was regularly offered a fresh drink or a top up, and I always felt well looked after.
Because the cruise is all inclusive, it was lovely not having to think about signing for every drink or snack. Premium drinks, cocktails, wines and speciality coffees were all included, which made the whole experience feel indulgent yet incredibly relaxed. Apart from a luxurious pedicure in the spa, and very occasional ultra-premium wines or champagnes should you choose them, there was very little I felt the need to pay for once on board.
Dining: Every Venue a Winner, Even for Fussy Eaters
I will admit that I can be quite particular with food and do not always love everything I try. With that in mind, I set myself a challenge on this sailing: to try every dining venue on board.
I was not disappointed once.
Every restaurant delivered beautifully prepared dishes, full of flavour and presented with finesse, without ever feeling overly fussy. Whether it was a more casual lunch or a special evening meal, the quality was consistently high.
A standout for me was the sushi bar. I had never had sushi before, so this was a completely new experience. I went for lunch and enjoyed teriyaki chicken, sushi rolls and all the traditional accompaniments. It was absolutely delicious and a great way to try something different in a relaxed setting.
If you have clients who are real foodies, they will love the range and quality of dining on Seabourn. Equally, if they are a little cautious with food, like me, they will find plenty to enjoy and might even be tempted to try something new.
A Haven on Board: The Square
During the day, my favourite spot on Seabourn Ovation quickly became The Square. This is a stylish yet comfortable lounge area where you can order coffees and snacks that change throughout the day depending on the time.
It is the perfect place to sit with a book, catch up with family on Wi‑Fi, or simply people-watch with a cappuccino and something sweet or savoury. For anyone who enjoys quieter corners rather than constant activity, The Square is a lovely little haven. My other favourite spot was at the very back of the ship I found a small pool and two warm bubbly Jacuzzi spots that I had completely to myself while other guests were exploring ashore. A waiter still spotted me and came out to offer champagne so I was very impressed with that. In that area they also had a cooler with bottles of water, soda and even sun cream and pool towels, they literally thought of everything.
Cocktails, Pool Time and Evenings in The Club
Out on deck and around the pool, the atmosphere remained relaxed and welcoming. The bar staff were excellent at making cocktails exactly how you liked them, and were always happy to tweak a recipe or suggest something new.
Most evenings there was some form of entertainment around the pool or elsewhere on the ship, which created a lovely holiday atmosphere as the sun went down. Inside, The Club offered live music and dancing every evening, with a great band and a fun, sociable mood.
Unlike some of the very large ships, you will not find huge Broadway-style productions on Seabourn Ovation. Instead, you get intimate musical shows, talented onboard entertainers and live bands that fit the style and size of the ship perfectly.
Perfect For Solo Travellers Too
One of the aspects I was particularly impressed by was how well Seabourn looks after solo travellers.
On Seabourn Ovation there is a dedicated hosted table for solo guests, hosted by a Seabourn representative, so you never have to worry about dining alone unless that is your preference. It creates a really friendly social setting where you can meet other guests, share stories from your day and feel part of a like-minded group.
For anyone considering travelling solo, this is a big reassurance. You can enjoy all the benefits of small-ship luxury cruising, with the comfort of knowing you will be welcomed and included from day one.
Shore Excursions: Flexibility and Choice
Another question I am often asked is about shore excursions and what is or is not included.
On Seabourn, shore excursions are optional and come at an additional cost, but they are clearly priced in advance on your cruise planner before you travel. You can decide exactly which ones appeal to you, budget accordingly, and pre-book the experiences that suit your interests.
Alternatively, you can simply step off the ship and explore independently, which many guests choose to do in compact or familiar ports. The choice is entirely yours, and you are never under any pressure to book a particular excursion.
Who I Recommend Seabourn Ovation For
Based on my experience, Seabourn Ovation is a fantastic option for:
- Couples and friends who want a relaxed yet luxurious small-ship experience
- Solo travellers who like the reassurance of hosted dining and a friendly, sociable atmosphere
- Food lovers who appreciate quality dining and variety without fuss
- Guests who love attentive service, inclusive drinks and a ship that feels like a refined boutique hotel at sea
If you are ready to move on from the crowds of the very big ships, or you simply want your first luxury cruise to feel warm, easy and unpretentious, Seabourn Ovation is well worth considering.
