Exploring Australia: Broadbeach, Brisbane & Sydney for New Year
Australia had been on my wish list for a long time, so finally making the trip and celebrating New Year in Sydney felt incredibly special. Our route took us through Broadbeach, Brisbane and Sydney, with a mix of beach time, city exploring and a few very memorable wildlife encounters along the way.
Broadbeach: A Gold Coast Favourite: We based ourselves in Broadbeach on the Gold Coast and it quickly became a firm favourite. The area has a more relaxed, polished feel compared with some of its neighbours, with Stunning beaches that are perfect for walks, sunrise photos and swimming when conditions allow. Excellent shopping, from local boutiques to larger centres. A great choice of restaurants and cafes, so there is always somewhere new to try for brunch or dinner.
We also visited Surfers Paradise, which is iconic and worth seeing once, but it was not really for me. It felt much busier and more commercialised, and I much preferred the calmer, more sophisticated atmosphere in Broadbeach. It is a good example of why it helps to speak to someone who has seen both sides and can match you to the right Gold Coast base. One thing I would absolutely recommend for this area: hire a car. Distances can be bigger than they look on a map, and having a car gives you the freedom to explore beaches, towns and local attractions at your own pace.
Brisbane & The Gold Coast: City, Culture, Koalas & Theme Parks: From the coast we spent time in Brisbane, which really surprised me in the best way. It has a friendly, laid‑back feel but with plenty going on. We visited the man‑made beach at South Bank, which is such a fun feature right in the middle of the city. It is a lovely spot to cool off, people‑watch and take in the river views.
Wildlife was a big part of our time here too. We visited: Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, where we could see koalas, kangaroos and other native animals in a more natural setting.
Brisbane Zoo, another chance to learn more about Australia’s unique wildlife and conservation work.
To add even more fun into the trip, we headed to Warner Bros. Movie World on the Gold Coast. It is a great day out for film and thrill‑ride fans, with themed attractions, live entertainment and plenty to keep both adults and families entertained.
These stops are fantastic if you want those classic “Australia” memories, especially if you are travelling with children or are an animal lover yourself. We also made a point of visiting Redcliffe, the coastal town where the Bee Gees grew up. It is a lovely trip from Brisbane in its own right, but for music fans it is an extra‑special stop, with a real sense of history attached. Plus there is the BEST NRL Australian Rugby League shop there!! Again, having a hire car made all of this so much easier. It allowed us to get out of the city centre, reach places like Lone Pine, the zoo, Movie World and Redcliffe, and build in little detours that would be tricky by public transport alone.
Sydney: Iconic Sights & An Unforgettable New Year! Our trip finished in Sydney, just in time for New Year, and this part of the journey was packed with bucket‑list moments. We walked over the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which is an incredible way to appreciate the scale of the harbour and the city skyline. We also took the ferry over to Manly, combining beautiful coastal views with a classic Sydney beach experience and a more relaxed seaside vibe. On New Year’s Eve we watched the famous fireworks from Blues Point, which was absolutely amazing. Seeing the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge framed by the fireworks from across the water is something I will never forget. It is the kind of experience that really rewards good planning, as the best viewpoints and options can book up well in advance.
Why This Trip Stood Out: Looking back, what I loved about this itinerary was the variety: Relaxed beach days and great dining in Broadbeach, Easy city exploring, riverside walks, man‑made beaches, wildlife encounters and a theme park day at Movie World around Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Iconic sights, harbour walks, ferry trips to Manly and a bucket‑list New Year’s Eve in Sydney.
If you are considering a similar trip, my biggest piece of practical advice would be to budget for a hire car, at least for the Gold Coast and Brisbane sections. The flexibility it gives you to explore at your own pace is invaluable.
