The Greek Island That Didn’t Look Anything Like I Expected

Jacob Wells on 08 Jun 2021

When I first arrived in Santorini, I genuinely thought I’d made a mistake. The side of the island where the ferry docked was brown, rugged and volcanic. It looked nothing like the picture-perfect Santorini I’d seen in magazines. Then I reached Oia...

Ten years later, I still remember that first view. The bright white buildings against the dark volcanic cliffs were breathtaking. Tiny winding streets, blue-domed churches and hidden little corners seemed to appear around every turn, all overlooking the deep blue Aegean Sea.

At the time, I was living and working in Crete and caught the ferry across from Heraklion. It’s still one of my favourite tips for anyone staying in Crete today. In around two hours, you can tick off two incredible Greek islands without having to repack your suitcase or deal with airport check-ins.

One of the things I loved most about Santorini was simply wandering. Taking a random turning, stopping for a drink, browsing a craft shop or finding a view that looked even better than the last one. It’s one of those places where getting slightly lost is half the fun.

I’d also recommend a visit to Perissa Beach. Forget golden sand, Santorini’s volcanic history means the beach is covered in dark volcanic sand, giving it a completely different feel to many other Greek islands. Fun fact, the island’s famous caldera was formed by one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history around 3,600 years ago.

We also spent time in Fira, the island’s bustling capital. I still remember a local telling me to avoid the busiest cruise ship days if possible, as the island can become incredibly busy when multiple ships are in port.

Even now, two Santorini hotels remain firmly on my bucket list. Mystique, with its stunning cave-style suites overlooking the caldera, and Nobu Hotel Santorini, which looks perfect for honeymooners looking for something extra special.
