Why September Is the Smartest Month to Travel If You Value Space and Comfort

Jessica Cullen on 06 May 2026

If you love travelling but do not love queues, crowds and sky‑high prices, there is one month that quietly outperforms the rest of the year: September. It is the moment the school holidays end, the temperatures calm down and the pace softens, but many destinations are still at their absolute best. If you value space, comfort and an easier kind of travel, here is why September might just be your new favourite month to get away.

1. The crowds go home, but the sunshine often stays

In many parts of Europe, September offers the sweet spot:

  • The weather is still warm enough for beach days and alfresco dinners.
  • The intense heat of July and August has usually passed.
  • Families are heading back to school, so resorts and cities feel calmer and more spacious.

Whether it is a Greek island, the Spanish coast, Italy, or a Mediterranean cruise, you can often enjoy the same beautiful settings with fewer people and a much more relaxed atmosphere.

If you are someone who loves a sunlounger, a quiet pool, or wandering a city without shoulder‑to‑shoulder crowds, September simply feels more civilised.

2. Better value for your comfort level

If you enjoy travelling in comfort but still want to be mindful of budget, September can be a clever time to “upgrade” your experience:

  • Fares and room rates often drop once the school holidays finish.
  • You may find that a higher‑category room, boutique hotel or better itinerary fits your budget in September when it would not in August.
  • You can sometimes stretch to longer stays or add special extras (like private transfers or a standout excursion) for a similar overall cost.

You are essentially getting more space, more comfort and more quality for your money, just by shifting your dates.

3. Space to breathe: in resorts, cities and on ships

If you are not a fan of crowds, September can feel like a breath of fresh air.

  • In resorts: pools, beaches, restaurants and kids’ clubs feel less hectic, and service often feels more personal.
  • In cities: attractions are still open, but queues are shorter, pavements are less packed and it is easier to get that perfect photo or quiet coffee spot.
  • On cruises: ships can feel calmer compared to the peak family‑holiday weeks, especially on certain sailings and itineraries.

For many of my clients who value space and comfort, the difference in “feel” between August and September is huge.

4. More comfortable temperatures for exploring

If you like to be out and about rather than glued to a sunbed, September weather is often your friend:

  • Cooler mornings and evenings are kinder for sightseeing, hiking and city walks.
  • You can enjoy al fresco dining without extreme heat.
  • Outdoor activities such as cycling, wine‑tasting, day trips and boat tours can be far more pleasant.

This is especially true for destinations that can be very hot in high summer, such as parts of southern Europe, North Africa, the USA and Asia.

5. Easier logistics (and less travel stress)

Travel itself can feel noticeably smoother in September:

  • Airports are generally calmer after the main school holidays.
  • Security and check‑in queues can be shorter outside peak weekends.
  • It is often easier to secure preferred flight times, transfers and seat choices if you plan ahead.

For busy professionals and families, that reduced “travel friction” can make a real difference to how rested you feel once you arrive.

6. A reset between summer and Christmas

September holidays also work beautifully from a lifestyle and work perspective:

  • It gives you something to look forward to once the main summer rush is over.
  • You can return home feeling refreshed just as the days start to draw in.
  • It provides a mental reset before the run‑up to Christmas and year‑end pressures.

Many of my clients now treat a September break as a non‑negotiable part of their year: a chance to step out of routine, get some sun and reconnect, without sacrificing comfort or battling peak‑season chaos.

7. How I help you make the most of September

The key to a brilliant September trip is matching the right destination and style of travel to you:

  • Do you prefer a quiet, upmarket beach hotel, a villa, a city break, a rail journey, safari, or a cruise?
  • Are you looking for adults‑only calm, or a more relaxed family trip?
  • How warm do you like it, really?

My role is to take all of that into account, then use my network of vetted airlines, hotels, cruise lines, rail operators and local partners to design a trip that maximises space, comfort and value for the exact dates you have.

You tell me your window of travel, who is going and what kind of pace you like. I handle the research, comparisons and logistics for you, so all you have to do is decide which version of “your perfect September” sounds best.

If you are someone who hates crowds, loves a bit of comfort and wants your time away to feel easy, September could quietly become your favourite month to travel.
