Knock Out Trip to Norway
Why My Small-Group Trip Was Worth Every Penny
I was lucky enough to travel to Norway on one of Exodus’ Signature departures, and it turned out to be one of the most enriching trips I’ve ever experienced. It still had that classic Exodus feel, with thoughtful local interactions and a genuine sense of connection, but wrapped in a more elevated, boutique style that really made it stand out.
We started and finished in Trondheim, a city that feels both historic and quietly cool. Colourful wooden buildings line the river, and the cobbled streets lead you to museums, cosy cafés and the impressive Nidaros Cathedral. We spent time exploring some of the city’s museums and even walked part of the pilgrims’ route, learning about the legends, stories and spiritual journeys that have shaped this region over centuries. It gave our time in Trondheim a depth and sense of place that you simply don’t get if you just pass through.
From there, the itinerary unfolded like a beautifully told story, leading us into the fjordlands. The scenery was, as you might expect, utterly breathtaking: deep blue water, soaring cliffs and tiny villages clinging to the shoreline. Our accommodation choices really added to the experience. One highlight was staying in an old clipfish factory, now a wonderfully atmospheric place to sleep. Here we learned about Norway’s long relationship with dried cod, trade routes and traditions, and how this humble product helped shape coastal communities. It felt very special to stay somewhere that carried so much history in its walls.
We also stayed in a boutique hotel in the fjordlands called Blåtind, which was a real gem. It felt intimate and stylish, but still very rooted in its surroundings: big views, warm hospitality and that sense of being tucked away somewhere truly Norwegian. These weren’t just “beds for the night” but places that added richness and character to the journey.
The activities were just as thoughtfully curated. We kayaked on mirror-like water surrounded by mountains, which was as peaceful as it was exhilarating. We ramped things up with a thrilling RIB boat ride through the fjords, skimming across the water and getting up close to sheer rock faces and hidden inlets. Back on land, we had an incredible Viking-themed dinner that brought history to life in a fun and immersive way, with stories, flavours and a real sense of stepping back in time.
One of my favourite experiences was visiting a fjord-side orchard. We met the owner for a private visit, spent the afternoon tasting cider and hearing about life on the farm: the challenges of working with the land, the changing seasons, and how they’re keeping old traditions alive while innovating for the future. It was relaxed, authentic and exactly the kind of personal connection that makes travel so meaningful.
Throughout the trip, our Exodus guide was fantastic: attentive, knowledgeable and clearly passionate about Norway. The itinerary felt perfectly balanced, with time to soak up the views, be active, delve into history and culture, and simply enjoy the journey. By the time we returned to Trondheim, it genuinely felt like we'd journeyed beneath the surface of Norway , not just ticked off a list of sights.
These Signature departures do sit at a higher price point, and that is worth acknowledging. But having experienced one myself, I can absolutely see the value. The quality of the guiding, the thoughtfully chosen, characterful accommodation and the depth of local interaction mean you come home with more than just photos: you return with stories, friendships and a real understanding of the places you’ve visited.
If you want something extra special, love the idea of travelling in a small group and really connecting with local people and traditions, Exodus’ Signature trips are a cut above and very much worth considering. I recommend them with complete confidence, knowing just how much you gain from that extra investment: a truly wonderful, memorable journey that stays with you long after you return.
