Borneo - Into the Wild
If you are dreaming of a journey that feels truly immersive and different, Borneo is a destination that stays with you long after you return home. Ancient rainforest, rare wildlife and a sense of adventure you can still enjoy in comfort: it is all here. Earlier this year, in June, I travelled to Borneo for a friend’s milestone birthday, and it turned into the most wonderful wildlife‑rich adventure, staying in beautifully rustic lodges surrounded by rainforest. This is the story of how we combined Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre with time deep in Danum Valley and a stay at Borneo Rainforest Lodge.
How it began...
A friend’s milestone birthday gave us the perfect excuse to finally plan a trip to Borneo. With a group of us travelling together, it felt like the ideal opportunity to go a little further, stay a little longer and make it really special.
Borneo had been on my wish list for years, especially for the chance to see orangutans in the wild. We combined Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre with time in Danum Valley and a stay at Borneo Rainforest Lodge, which gave us a brilliant mix of wildlife, dense rainforest and soft adventure.
Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre
We started at Sepilok, a fascinating introduction to the work being done to protect Borneo's orangutans. The centre cares for orphaned, injured and displaced orangutans, teaching them the skills they need to eventually fend for themselves in the forest. Watching them navigate feeding platforms, climb and interact with each other while hearing about their individual stories really brought the conservation work to life.
Understanding the rehabilitation process gave us a much deeper appreciation of what it takes to return an orangutan to the wild. It also meant that when we later saw orangutans living freely in the rainforest, the experience felt even more powerful and emotional.
From there, we headed deeper into Borneo towards Danum Valley.
Deep into Danum Valley
Arriving in Danum Valley felt like stepping into a completely different world. This protected area is home to ancient primary rainforest, thought to be around 130 million years old. It feels vast and untouched, with towering trees forming the canopy, dense layers of forest below and the Danum River winding its way through the valley. Everywhere you look something is moving, rustling or calling, even when you cannot immediately see where the sound is coming from.
It is very much off the beaten track, and that remoteness is exactly what makes it so special. The journey in takes you far away from everyday life, and once you arrive, the rainforest is all‑encompassing. You are completely immersed in nature.
We stayed at Borneo Rainforest Lodge, which was a delight. Set right in the rainforest beside the river, the lodge is beautifully designed and blends seamlessly into its surroundings. The accommodation was extremely comfortable in a rustic‑chic way, the food was excellent and the overall atmosphere felt relaxed yet indulgent. It was the perfect base for everything we wanted to experience.
Our days were spent out with our guides, walking through the rainforest along trails that took us deep into the valley. Their knowledge was extraordinary. They seemed to pick up on every movement and sound, spotting things we would never have noticed on our own. There was always something to focus on, whether high up in the canopy, hidden amongst the foliage or moving quietly through the undergrowth.
One of my favourite experiences was the canopy walk at dusk. As the light faded, we were suspended among the treetops, listening as the forest slowly shifted from day to night. The calls grew louder, the atmosphere more intense, and there was a real sense of being a small part of a much bigger natural world.
Rafting on the Danum River was another real highlight and something I would absolutely recommend. We made our way downstream with the rainforest rising up steeply on both sides, drifting through calm sections where we could simply sit back and take everything in before hitting livelier stretches of water. It was great fun and felt like a genuine adventure, with the river giving us a different perspective on the forest. It is one of the experiences that really defined the trip for me.
After dark, we headed out again on night treks with our guides and torches in search of nocturnal wildlife. The forest felt completely transformed once the sun had gone down. The sounds intensified, and our torch beams picked out the tiniest movements in the branches and undergrowth. We were lucky enough to see flying red squirrels gliding effortlessly between the trees, along with a whole cast of smaller nocturnal creatures. Our guides had an incredible ability to detect life in what initially looked like complete darkness, and it was fascinating to realise how much activity begins only after nightfall.
The Orangutans
We were incredibly fortunate to see several orangutans in the wild, including impressive adults, mothers carrying their babies and younger orangutans swinging their way through the trees. Watching them in the rainforest was a completely different experience to seeing them at Sepilok. These were truly wild animals, utterly at home in their environment, feeding, nesting and moving through the canopy as we quietly observed from below.
Seeing a mother with her baby was particularly moving, especially knowing more about the challenges they face and the work that goes into giving rescued orangutans a second chance. Having already learnt about the rehabilitation projects at Sepilok made our encounters with wild orangutans in Danum Valley all the more meaningful and humbling.
It was a fantastic way for a group of friends to celebrate a milestone birthday. Between Sepilok and Danum Valley, we experienced Borneo from so many different angles: hiking through ancient rainforest, wandering along canopy walkways, rafting along the river and heading back out again after dark.
Danum Valley was definitely the highlight for me. I really did not want to leave Borneo Rainforest Lodge and could easily have stayed for several more days. I would happily return in a heartbeat, perhaps for a longer stay to sink even further into the rhythm of the rainforest.
