Visiting Rome

Ancient wonders, Hidden streets and endless pasta

Rome, Italy

Ancient wonders, Hidden streets and endless pasta my 4 day trip where we explored and walked for miles, but is one of the most amazing cities I've ever been too.

There's something magical about arriving in Rome. From the moment you step off the train from the airport, you can feel the city's unique blend of history, culture and everyday Italian life. We spent three nights exploring Italy's capital in March, and although four days never feels quite long enough, it was more than enough time to fall completely in love with the Eternal City.

Our home for the trip was a traditional guesthouse in the lively Termini district. Often overlooked by first-time visitors, Termini proved to be the perfect location. With excellent transport connections and countless family-run cafés and restaurants on the doorstep, it offered an authentic taste of Roman life while providing easy access to the city's famous landmarks.

To get our bearings, we climbed aboard one of Rome's hop-on, hop-off sightseeing buses. It was the ideal introduction, passing many of the city's iconic attractions while helping us plan the days ahead. It also saved plenty of walking—although comfortable shoes are still an absolute must. Rome is a city best explored on foot, and every cobbled street seems to lead somewhere worth discovering.

Our first evening belonged to the spectacular Trevi Fountain. Visiting after dark was one of the highlights of the trip. Beautifully illuminated against the night sky, the fountain buzzed with visitors admiring its incredible sculptures while the sound of flowing water echoed through the square. Just a few streets away, we found a welcoming local restaurant where authentic Italian meatballs and fresh pasta provided the perfect end to our first day. A leisurely stroll then took us to the elegant Spanish Steps, where the atmosphere captured everything we had imagined Rome would be.

History took centre stage on day two with a visit to the mighty Colosseum. Having booked tickets that included access to the arena floor, we were able to stand where gladiators once fought nearly two thousand years ago. Photographs simply cannot prepare you for the scale of this remarkable structure. Every archway, every weathered stone and every viewpoint tells another chapter of Rome's extraordinary past. We spent hours wandering through the ancient amphitheatre, reading about its fascinating history and simply taking in its breath taking surroundings.

Our final full day began beneath grey skies as we travelled by metro to Vatican City. Rain may have followed us throughout the morning, but it certainly didn't dampen our enthusiasm. After enjoying breakfast and coffee in a nearby café, surrounded by the towering Vatican walls, we entered the Vatican Museums.

The highlight was, without question, the Sistine Chapel. Standing beneath Michelangelo's world-famous ceiling was an unforgettable experience. The intricate detail and sheer scale of the artwork are impossible to appreciate until you're there in person.A short walk brought us into St Peter's Square, where even the rain couldn't diminish the atmosphere. Knowing this is where the Pope greets thousands of pilgrims and visitors each year made the moment feel even more special.

Before heading back towards the city centre, we treated ourselves to another traditional Italian coffee and cake. Wandering through Rome's charming streets, discovering independent shops and hidden cafés along the way, reminded us that some of the city's greatest moments aren't found on an itinerary.

Our final stop was the magnificent Pantheon. Nearly two thousand years old, this architectural masterpiece remains one of the best-preserved buildings from Ancient Rome. Standing beneath its vast dome was the perfect way to end our Roman adventure.Too soon, it was time to catch the airport bus home. Four days had flown by in a whirlwind of ancient history, unforgettable landmarks, delicious food and miles of walking.

Rome isn't simply a city you visit—it's a city you experience. Every piazza, every narrow street and every ancient monument has a story to tell. We left with tired feet, full hearts and a promise to return, because one trip to Rome is simply never enough.
