Which Cruise Line Is Best For Me?

How to choose the right cruise for you

Lisa Arbon on 16 Jun 2026

Choosing a cruise holiday can feel overwhelming. There are big resort‑style ships, chic adults‑only vessels, boutique river ships and small expedition ships heading to the ends of the earth. No wonder it is hard to know where to start.

As your personal Travel Counsellor, I like to begin with one simple question:
“What kind of holiday do you want this to feel like?”

Once you know that, it is much easier to choose between oceanriver and expedition cruises, then narrow down to the right cruise line and ship.

In this guide, I will walk you through:

  • Ocean cruises: from big family fun to chic adults‑only and luxury
  • River cruises: calm, cultural and close‑up
  • Expedition cruises: immersive adventures in the world’s most remote places

…and help you work out which feels most like you.

If you would like someone to work through the options with you, I can quickly narrow things down and recommend a handful of cruise lines and ships that genuinely fit how you like to travel.

Start Here: 7 Questions To Find Your Cruise Match

Before you fall in love with a particular ship, take a minute to think about:

  1. Who are you travelling with?
Couple, solo, friends, family or multi‑generational group?
  2. What kind of atmosphere do you enjoy on holiday?
Big, busy and fun; relaxed and sociable; or peaceful and nature‑focused?
  3. How important is “all‑inclusive”?
Do you want almost everything wrapped into the fare, or prefer a lower base price and pay‑as‑you‑go extras?
  4. What is your budget level?
    Mainstream, premium, luxury or ultra‑luxury?
  5. What matters more: the ship or the destination?
Are you choosing for waterslides and shows, or for ports, scenery and culture?
  6. Do you enjoy dressing up?
Love a black‑tie night, or happiest in smart‑casual?
  7. Do you have any must‑haves?
Kids’ clubs, adult‑only spaces, spa and wellness, accessible cabins, interconnecting cabins, waterparks, zodiacs and kayaking, or strong enrichment and lectures?

Your answers will naturally point you towards oceanriver or expedition cruising, and then to the style of cruise line within each.

Ocean Cruises: The Classic “Ship At Sea” Experience

Ocean cruises are what most people picture when they think of a cruise: larger ships sailing the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Norwegian fjords and beyond.

Within ocean cruising, there are a few distinct personalities.

1. Big, Fun Resort‑Style Ships (Perfect For Families & First‑Timers)

If you want your holiday to feel like a floating resort with plenty of “wow” factor, look at the big, feature‑packed lines.

Think about:

  • Royal Caribbean International
    • Huge ships with surf simulators, zip lines, climbing walls and headline entertainment.
    • Example ships: Icon of the Seas in the Caribbean, Wonder of the Seas in the Med, Anthem of the Seas from the UK.
    • Excellent kids’ and teens’ clubs and a huge choice of dining.
    • For example, a week in the Mediterranean on a ship like Anthem of the Seas can give you Balearic beaches and Italian cities by day, then surfing simulators, shows and family dining back on board in the evening.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)
    • Relaxed “Freestyle Cruising” with flexible dining and lots of restaurants and bars.
    • Example ships: Norwegian PrimaNorwegian VivaNorwegian Escape.
    • Great for families and groups of friends who enjoy lively evenings and plenty of entertainment.
  • P&O Cruises (ex‑UK favourites)
    • Ideal if you prefer to sail from the UK without flying.
    • Arvia and Iona offer big‑ship fun with family‑friendly facilities; Britannia remains a classic choice.

Best for:
Families, multi‑gen groups, and first‑time cruisers who want non‑stop activities, big production shows and plenty of dining choice.

Good to know:
Not everything is included. Some activities, speciality dining and drinks packages carry extra charges, so it is worth understanding the full picture before you book. I can help you compare what your fare actually covers and what you might want to add.

Odyssey of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International

2. Chic, Grown‑Up Ocean Cruises (Ideal For Couples & Friends)

If you prefer a stylish bar over a waterpark, and long dinners over late‑night karaoke, this might be your sweet spot.

Think about:

  • Celebrity Cruises
    • Contemporary, design‑led ships with a premium feel and excellent food and wine.
    • Edge‑class ships like Celebrity EdgeCelebrity Apex and Celebrity Ascent have beautiful rooftop spaces and the signature “magic carpet”.
  • Virgin Voyages (Adults‑Only)
    • Adults‑only ships with a cool, boutique‑hotel‑at‑sea feel.
    • Scarlet LadyValiant Lady and Resilient Lady focus on foodie experiences, live music, wellness and nightlife.
    • No formal nights, no buffets, plenty of included speciality dining.
  • Marella Cruises
    • Smaller to mid‑sized ships with a very relaxed, friendly, British‑centric approach.
    • Good value packages from UK airports and easy‑going service.

Best for:
Honeymoons, special occasions, child‑free getaways and anyone who wants a modern, sociable setting with strong dining and bar options.

Celebrity Xcel, Celebrity Cruises

3. Luxury & Ultra‑Luxury Ocean Cruises (For Guests Who Want It All)

If you love fine dining, attentive service and a quieter, more refined setting, luxury and ultra‑luxury ocean lines are worth exploring.

Think about:

  • Silversea Cruises
    • Smaller ships, high staff‑to‑guest ratio and butler service in most suites.
    • Many fares include drinks, gratuities and more.
  • Seabourn
    • Yacht‑style ships with spacious suites and relaxed, understated elegance.
    • Excellent for regions like the Med, Caribbean and also expedition‑style itineraries.
  • Regent Seven Seas Cruises
    • Among the most inclusive at sea, often bundling excursions, drinks, Wi‑Fi and more into the fare.
    • Elegant ships and very polished service.
  • Oceania Cruises (Upper‑Premium)
    • Renowned for gastronomy on ships like Marina and Riviera.
    • Perfect if you are a foodie who wants destination‑rich itineraries and beautifully presented cuisine.

Best for:
Guests who value space, privacy, exceptional food and a quieter, grown‑up atmosphere.

Good to know:
Upfront fares are higher, but when you factor in all the inclusions, true value can be very strong. I can help you compare a luxury line against a premium line plus add‑ons so you can see what really suits you.

4. Destination‑Focused Ocean Cruises (For Culture Lovers & Explorers)

Some ocean lines put the spotlight firmly on where you are going, rather than what is on the top deck.

Think about:

  • Holland America Line
    • Mid‑sized ships with excellent itineraries, particularly in Alaska, Norway and longer “collector” voyages.
    • Strong enrichment, live music and a classic cruise feel.
  • Azamara
    • Smaller ships, longer stays and more overnights in port.
    • Great if you like to dine ashore, explore in the evenings and really get under the skin of a destination.
  • Viking Ocean
    • Adults‑only ocean ships with a calm, Scandinavian style.
    • Focus on destination immersion, lectures and thoughtful itineraries.
  • Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express
    • A unique, working‑ship route along the Norwegian coast, carrying both locals and visitors.
    • Perfect for fjords, Northern Lights, Midnight Sun and a very authentic sense of place.
  • Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines
    • Smaller, more traditional ships sailing mainly from UK ports.
    • Known for their friendly, British atmosphere, scenic cruising and thoughtfully crafted itineraries that often include lesser‑visited ports.

Best for:
Travellers who value itineraries, port time and enrichment over big‑ship bells and whistles. If you prefer smaller, more traditional ships with interesting routes from the UK, Fred. Olsen and similar lines can be an excellent fit.

River Cruises: Calm, Cultural & Close‑Up

River cruises swap open sea for gentle waterways: think the Rhine and Danube, the Rhône and Saône, the Douro, the Seine, and beyond.

River ships are smaller, carry fewer guests and dock right in the heart of towns and cities, so you can simply step off and start exploring.

What River Cruises Feel Like

  • Hotel‑style ships usually carrying under 200 guests.
  • Smooth sailing with virtually no motion, ideal if you are nervous about the sea.
  • City‑centre docking in places like Vienna, Budapest, Cologne and Porto.
  • Included excursions such as walking tours, castle visits, wine tastings and Christmas markets.
  • Sociable, relaxed atmosphere with low‑key evening entertainment.

Think of drifting along the Danube, waking up in Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest on consecutive mornings, with guided walks and coffee houses all within easy reach of your ship.

River Cruise Lines To Consider

  • Viking River Cruises
    • Modern Longships with Scandinavian design and clear inclusions, sailing Europe’s major rivers and beyond.
  • AmaWaterways
    • Stylish ships with a strong focus on food, wine and active options like biking tours.
  • Avalon Waterways
    • Signature Panorama Suites with beds facing the window so you can watch the world drift by.
  • Scenic & Emerald Cruises
    • Scenic offers a more all‑inclusive, luxury feel; Emerald is slightly more casual but still very comfortable.
    • Both operate on key European rivers and some more exotic routes.

Best for:
Couples, solos and friends who love culture, scenery and gentle exploration rather than big‑ship razzmatazz. If you are travelling solo, some river lines and smaller ocean ships offer a particularly friendly, welcoming feel and sometimes dedicated solo cabins or reduced solo supplements.

Good to know:
Entertainment is more low‑key than larger ocean ships, and river levels can occasionally affect itineraries. On the plus side, you unpack once, enjoy smooth sailing and wake up in a new place almost every day. If you are worried about seasickness, river cruises are an excellent option, and many modern ocean ships are also designed to feel surprisingly stable. I can talk you through cabin and itinerary choices that can help if this is a concern.

Expedition Cruises: Immersive, Small‑Ship Adventure

Expedition cruises are very different from mainstream ocean or river cruises. Think wildlife, zodiacs, remote landscapes and expert guides, often in regions like Antarctica, Svalbard, Greenland or the Galápagos.

The ship becomes your comfortable base for daily adventures off the vessel, rather than the main attraction in itself.

What Expedition Cruises Feel Like

  • Smaller ships, often 100 to 500 guests, designed for exploration rather than entertainment.
  • Daily landings and zodiac trips, weather permitting, to view wildlife and landscapes up close.
  • Expert expedition teams of naturalists, historians and scientists who lecture, guide walks and host briefings.
  • A strong sense of discovery, often with a flexible itinerary to follow wildlife and weather.

Expedition Lines To Consider

  • HX (Hurtigruten Expeditions)
    • The expedition arm of Hurtigruten, specialising in small‑ship adventures to places like Antarctica, Svalbard, Greenland and the Galápagos.
    • Emphasis on science, sustainability and getting guests off the ship as much as possible.
  • Seabourn Expedition Ships
    • Combines Seabourn’s luxury style with a full expedition programme, including zodiacs and, on some ships, submarines and kayaks.
  • Other specialist expedition operators
    • There are a number of niche expedition brands, each with their own style, ship size and focus. Some lean more luxurious, others more “expedition‑first”.

Best for:
Travellers who are excited by wildlife, ice, remote communities and nature, and who are happy to trade waterslides and big shows for boots, waterproofs and zodiac rides.

Good to know:
These itineraries are often seasonal, may require long‑haul flights and can sell out well in advance. Physical fitness requirements vary by trip. I can help you choose a sailing that matches your comfort level, interests and budget, and build in pre‑ and post‑cruise stays so the trip feels balanced and rewarding.
