Discovering Sri Lanka
I was fortunate enough to join an educational trip to Sri Lanka, giving me the opportunity to experience the country first-hand while visiting a variety of hotels and exploring several different regions.
Sri Lanka is often described as a destination that has a bit of everything, and after travelling around the country I can certainly see why. In just over a week we experienced wildlife, tea plantations, historic cities, beautiful scenery and the coast.
One of my favourite stays was at Taru Villas Maia near Habarana, a peaceful base for exploring Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. From here we visited Minneriya National Park, which was the highlight of my trip. Seeing large herds of wild elephants roaming freely in their natural habitat was an unforgettable experience. I also loved the tea country and staying at Thotalagala Tea Plantation Bungalow. The cooler temperatures, rolling tea plantations and spectacular viewpoints made it one of the most scenic parts of our journey.
Around Sigiriya, one of my favourite moments wasn't actually climbing the famous rock fortress. I really enjoyed the peaceful boat trip on the nearby lake and seeing Sigiriya above the surrounding countryside. I recommend exploring the gardens at the base of the rock and admiring it from below. Climbing to the top is fantastic if you enjoy a challenge, but having done it I won't suggest it if you don't enjoy heights or lots of steps!
A scenic train journey is on many people's bucket lists and, while I'm glad I experienced one, I personally preferred taking in the same beautiful landscapes from the comfort of our minibus. Likewise, our visit to Yala National Park was quieter for wildlife than Minneriya, which just shows that every safari is different.
We ended the trip with a stay at Landesi by Nine in the heart of historic Galle Fort. I loved wandering through the charming streets, browsing the independent shops and learning about the fascinating history of this UNESCO World Heritage Site on a city tour. It was a different side of Sri Lanka and somewhere I could happily have spent even longer.
Educational trips like this are invaluable because they allow me to experience destinations first-hand. That means I can give honest, personal advice and help tailor an itinerary around what you will enjoy most.
If Sri Lanka is on your travel wish list, I'd love to help
you plan a holiday that combines the experiences, hotels and regions that are
the best fit for you.
