Best Honeymoon Safaris in Africa: Where to Go, When to Travel and How to Plan
A practical guide to planning the best honeymoon safaris in Africa, including where to go, when to travel, luxury lodges, safari-and-beach combinations, costs and how to choose the right safari honeymoon from the UK.
A honeymoon safari is one of those trips that feels properly special. Not “nice hotel and a bottle of fizz in the room” special.
I mean waking up to the sound of the African bush, heading out at sunrise with coffee in hand, watching elephants cross the track in front of you and then coming back to a private plunge pool, outdoor shower and dinner under the stars.
A honeymoon safari gives you something most beach holidays can’t: adventure, wildlife, luxury, proper once-in-a-lifetime moments and the feeling that you’re doing something together you’ll still be talking about years later.
That said, a honeymoon safari does need planning properly.
If you’re planning your first safari, I’d recommend reading my Complete Beginner’s Guide to Going on Safari first. It covers the basics of how safaris work, what a typical day looks like and what to expect before you start narrowing down honeymoon destinations.
For a wider look at safari destinations, luxury lodges, wildlife, safari styles and itinerary ideas, my Complete Luxury Safari Guide brings the whole planning process together in one place.
Are Safaris Good for Honeymoons?
Yes. Very. Otherwise this would be an impressively pointless guide.
A honeymoon safari can work especially well if you want:
- Something more memorable than a standard beach
holiday
- Luxury lodges or tented camps
- Private plunge pools
- Big wildlife moments
- A safari and beach combination
- A sense of adventure
- A once-in-a-lifetime trip
- A holiday that feels properly personal
The key is choosing the right destination, lodge and pace. That’s where I can help. Tell me your rough budget, travel dates and the kind of honeymoon you want, and I’ll narrow down the safari options that actually suit you.
What Makes a Safari Honeymoon-Friendly?
A genuinely honeymoon-friendly safari is about more than a big bed and a nice view.
The best honeymoon safari lodges usually offer:
- Romantic suites or tented rooms
- Private decks
- Outdoor showers or baths
- Private plunge pools
- Sundowners in the bush
- Candlelit dinners
- Spa treatments
- Private vehicles, where budget allows
- Easy beach or city combinations
- Good logistics and smooth transfers
You want the excitement of safari without feeling like you’re constantly packing, flying, transferring and checking in somewhere new.
Best Safari Destinations for Honeymoons
There isn’t one single best honeymoon safari destination. It depends on your budget, dates, travel style and whether you want pure safari, safari and beach, or safari mixed with city, wine and scenery.
South Africa Honeymoon Safari
South Africa is one of the best honeymoon safari destinations if you want variety, luxury and excellent value. South Africa is also one of the easiest places to begin if you are first-time safari travellers.
It works beautifully because you can combine a safari with Cape Town, the Winelands, the Garden Route, beaches, boutique hotels and fine dining. What makes South Africa especially good for honeymoons is the variety.
You could start in Cape Town, spend a few days eating properly, drinking wine in Franschhoek, wandering along the coast, then finish with a luxury safari lodge.
If you want a honeymoon with safari, Cape Town, the Winelands, boutique hotels and excellent food, my South Africa Safari Guide explains why South Africa works so well for a varied luxury safari honeymoon.
If South Africa is on your shortlist, get in touch and I’ll help build a honeymoon itinerary that balances the safari properly with Cape Town, wine country, beach time or wherever else you may fancy.
Kenya Honeymoon Safari
Kenya is one of the great classic safari honeymoon destinations.
This is the Africa many people picture before they go: golden plains, acacia trees, hot air balloons, lions, cheetahs, elephants, tented camps and the Maasai Mara.
Kenya also combines brilliantly with the Indian Ocean. You can follow your safari with Zanzibar, Mauritius, the Seychelles or Kenya’s own coast. That makes it one of the best choices if you want the classic “wildlife first, beach afterwards” honeymoon.
The key is choosing the right camp and the right season. A Maasai Mara conservancy camp can feel quieter and more exclusive than staying only in the main reserve, while migration season can be spectacular but also more expensive and busier.
If Kenya is on your honeymoon shortlist, I’ll help match the right camp, season and beach finish to the kind of trip you want. For more detail, my Kenya Safari Guide covers the Maasai Mara, luxury tented camps, the Great Migration and safari-and-beach combinations.
Tanzania Honeymoon Safari
Tanzania is one of Africa’s most iconic safari destinations and can make a superb honeymoon. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara form Tanzania’s famous Northern Circuit, giving you some of the best wildlife and scenery anywhere in Africa.
Tanzania works particularly well if you want to combine safari with Zanzibar. A few days of early starts, lions, elephants and wide-open plains, followed by white sand, warm sea and not much in the diary.
For a honeymoon, I’d usually look at a mix of accommodation styles. Perhaps a comfortable lodge near Ngorongoro Crater, a luxury tented camp in the Serengeti and then a beautiful beach hotel in Zanzibar. That gives you variety while still making the trip flow.
Tanzania can involve more internal travel than South Africa, so routing matters. The right order of camps, flights and beach finish can make the whole honeymoon feel seamless.
My Tanzania Safari Guide explains how the Northern Circuit works and how to build it into a luxury safari itinerary.
Botswana Honeymoon Safari
Botswana is one of the most exclusive safari destinations in Africa. It is ideal for couples who want something remote, luxurious, peaceful and wildlife-focused.
Botswana is not usually the cheapest honeymoon safari option, but it can be exceptional. The Okavango Delta offers a completely different style of safari, with mokoro trips, boat safaris, islands, floodplains and small remote camps.
If your idea of romance is space, silence, wildlife and not seeing many other people, Botswana could be perfect.
If your idea of romance is being within three minutes of a cocktail menu and a spa, we may want to choose the camp carefully.
If you’re considering Botswana for your honeymoon, I’d strongly suggest asking me to help shape the itinerary around the right camps, flights and budget.
If privacy, exceptional guiding and remote luxury are high on your honeymoon wish list, my Botswana Safari Guide explains why the Okavango Delta, Chobe and Moremi are among Africa's finest luxury safari destinations.
Namibia Honeymoon Safari
Namibia is very different from the classic honeymoon safari destinations. It is not the obvious choice for every honeymoon, but for couples who love scenery, space and adventure, it can be outstanding.
I’d usually recommend Namibia for couples who are comfortable with longer drives or who want a fly-drive style honeymoon rather than a simple lodge-and-beach itinerary.
You can combine red sand dunes, desert-adapted wildlife, star-filled skies, remote lodges, the Skeleton Coast and Etosha’s waterhole wildlife.
Read my Namibia Safari Guide for a better idea of how this kind of trip feels and how Namibia combines safari, landscapes and fly-drive freedom.
Best Safari and Beach Honeymoon Combinations
Safari and beach is one of the classic honeymoon combinations.
It works so well because safari gives you the adventure and the stories, while the beach gives you the recovery time afterwards.
Kenya and Tanzania are especially strong for Indian Ocean beach combinations. Zanzibar is often the most natural pairing with Tanzania, while Kenya can combine well with Zanzibar, Mauritius, Seychelles or Diani Beach.
South Africa can absolutely work with a beach extension, especially if you pair it with Mauritius or the Seychelles. But its real strength is that you don’t have to rely on a beach add-on to make the honeymoon feel complete. Cape Town gives you scenery, restaurants, beaches, coastal drives and boutique hotels, while the Winelands adds vineyard lunches, mountain views, beautiful places to stay and some of the best food and wine in the country.
The right choice depends on your budget, travel dates, flight routes and how much moving around you want to do.
I’ll help work out whether the beach extension genuinely improves the honeymoon or simply adds extra cost, flights and faff. As ever, we try to keep faff to a minimum.
Luxury Lodge or Tented Camp for a Honeymoon?
A luxury safari lodge usually feels more polished, with solid walls, larger suites, swimming pools, spa facilities, private decks and sometimes private plunge pools.
A luxury tented camp usually feels more traditional and atmospheric. You still get proper beds, en-suite bathrooms, good food and excellent service, but with canvas walls and a stronger sense of being out in the bush.
For many honeymoon itineraries, the best answer is both.
A few nights in a lodge followed by a few nights in a tented camp can give you a lovely contrast.
Accommodation makes a huge difference on a honeymoon safari. My Luxury Safari Lodges Explained guide compares polished safari lodges, luxury tented camps, private villas and exclusive-use options so you can choose the right style of stay.
Should You Book a Private Safari Vehicle?
For honeymooners, a private vehicle can be a lovely extra.
It gives you more flexibility over:
• Drive times
• Wildlife priorities
• Photography
• How long you spend at sightings
• Sundowner stops
• Whether you want a slower, more private safari experience
It usually adds cost, so it is not essential for every honeymoon.
In some small camps, the shared safari experience is already very personal. In other lodges, a private vehicle can make the trip feel much more exclusive.
This is something I’ll usually talk through when quoting. Sometimes it is worth the money. Sometimes you may prefer to put the budget into a better lodge, location or beach finish.
How Long Should a Honeymoon Safari Be?
For most honeymoons, I’d usually suggest at least four or five nights on safari if the budget allows.
As a rough guide:
- 3 nights — works as a short safari add-on
- 4–5 nights — ideal for a first safari
- 6–8 nights — better if combining two safari areas
- 10+ nights — ideal for a more in-depth safari or multi-country trip
If you’re combining safari with a beach stay, a common honeymoon structure might be:
- 4–5 nights safari
- 5–7 nights beach
Or:
- 3–4 nights Cape Town
- 2–3 nights Winelands
- 4 nights safari
When Is the Best Time for a Honeymoon Safari?
Normally, shortly after the wedding! However, the best time for a honeymoon safari depends on the destination and the type of experience you want.
As a rough guide:
- South Africa — May to September for strong
wildlife viewing
- Kenya — July to October for the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara
- Tanzania — June to October for general wildlife, with migration timing
depending on region
- Botswana — June to October for peak wildlife and Okavango Delta experiences
- Namibia — May to October for Etosha and dry season wildlife
However, there is no single perfect month for every honeymoon.
Green season can offer beautiful scenery, fewer visitors and better value in some areas. Shoulder season can also be excellent if you want to avoid peak prices.
The best time may also depend on your wedding date.
If you’re getting married in June and want to travel straight away, Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa can all work well. If you’re getting married in winter, we might look at South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania or safari-and-beach combinations depending on your priorities.
How Much Does a Honeymoon Safari Cost?
A honeymoon safari is not a cheap holiday, but then again, what honeymoon is? Fortunately, a honeymoon safari can offer excellent value when you understand what is included.
Many safari lodges include accommodation, meals, game drives, guides, park fees and sometimes drinks or laundry.
As a rough guide, a luxury honeymoon safari for two adults travelling from the UK could start from around £7,000 per couple for a five-night safari package including international flights and transfers. Or, if you have a rough budget in mind, get in touch and I’ll price up realistic honeymoon safari options so you can see what your money can actually achieve.
Ultra-luxury lodges, private vehicles, Botswana fly-in safaris, Great Migration season and premium beach extensions can push the cost higher.
South Africa is generally one of the best-value honeymoon safari destinations, especially if you want luxury lodges and a Cape Town or Winelands combination.
Kenya and Tanzania can become more expensive during peak migration season, while Botswana is usually one of the most exclusive and higher-budget options.
For a full breakdown of safari pricing, my HowMuch Does an African Safari Cost? guide explains realistic budgets, what's usually included and where your money goes.
Common Honeymoon Safari Mistakes
A few honeymoon-specific mistakes come up regularly.
- Leaving too soon after the wedding - If possible, give yourselves a day or two to breathe before travelling. Safari is incredible, but those early morning game drives feel much better when you’re not still recovering from the wedding.
- Ignoring the wedding season vs safari season - Your wedding date and the best safari season may not perfectly line up. That doesn’t mean it won’t work, but it does mean you should choose the destination carefully. A June wedding, December wedding or spring wedding can all point towards different safari and beach combinations.
- Forgetting honeymoon extras - If it’s your honeymoon, say so. Lodges and hotels may be able to arrange special dinners, room touches, upgrades, spa treatments or small extras. They are not guaranteed, but they are much easier to request when the trip is planned properly from the start.
- Not asking for help early enough - The best honeymoon safari rooms, lodges and beach hotels can book up quickly, especially around peak safari seasons and popular wedding months. Getting advice early gives you more choice, better routing and a much stronger chance of creating the trip you actually want, rather than the trip that happens to be left.
My Advice
Tell me your rough budget, wedding date, ideal travel dates and whether you want beach, city, wine, wilderness, luxury lodges, tented camps or something more adventurous, and I’ll build a honeymoon safari quote around you.
For one honeymoon I booked, the couple really wanted a proper safari but also had their hearts set on finishing in the Maldives, so we routed their flights via Dubai to make their dream itinerary possible.
That’s the real perk of booking through me. You’re not limited to a standard package or a fixed brochure itinerary. If you want something that doesn’t quite fit the usual template, I can piece the route together properly and make sure the flights, timings, hotels and transfers all work splendidly.
