Why Book with a Travel Counsellor?

Melanie Dalgleish on 09 Jul 2026

With so many booking websites, comparison tools and AI travel planners available, it's easy to wonder whether there's still a place for a travel agent. I completely understand why people ask the question. On the surface, it can seem quicker to book everything yourself. But in reality, most of my clients don't book with me because they can't do it themselves. They book with me because they don't want to spend hours researching, comparing options and worrying whether they've made the right decision. Whether you're planning a once-in-a-lifetime holiday, a weekend city break or business travel, here's why working with a Travel Counsellor can make a real difference...

I save you hours of research

Planning a trip can be exciting, but it can also become overwhelming very quickly.

Which hotel is actually worth the money? Which area is best to stay in? Is the cheapest flight really the best option? Do you need transfers? Is that connection too tight? Which cabin on a cruise ship should you choose?

Before long, you've spent hours reading reviews and still aren't sure you've made the right decision.

Instead of opening 25 browser tabs, you can simply tell me what you're looking for and let me do the hard work. I spend my days researching destinations, comparing suppliers and building itineraries, so you don't have to.

Recommendations based on real experience

Travel isn't just my job. It's my career, my passion and something I invest a huge amount of time in.

I regularly visit destinations myself, complete ongoing training with airlines, cruise lines, hotels and tourist boards, and keep up to date with new openings, route changes and industry developments.

That means my recommendations aren't based purely on internet reviews or sponsored adverts. They're based on professional knowledge, first-hand experience where possible, and years of helping clients find holidays that genuinely suit them.

Sometimes the hotel everyone is talking about isn't actually the best fit for you. Equally, there may be somewhere you've never heard of that's perfect.

Advice that's tailored to you

No two travellers are the same.

Some people want complete relaxation. Others want to fit as much as possible into every day. Some prioritise luxury, while others simply want the best value for their budget.

I take the time to understand what's important to you before making recommendations. Rather than trying to sell one particular holiday, my aim is to help you find the right one.

You're dealing with a real person who genuinely cares

Once you've booked online, you're usually just another booking reference.

When you book with me, I know who you are, where you're travelling and why the trip matters.

Whether it's a honeymoon, a special birthday, a long-awaited family holiday or an important business trip, I want everything to go smoothly because your experience reflects on me personally.

My clients know they can pick up the phone, send me a message or email me if they have a question before they travel. You don't have to spend hours searching forums or waiting in an online queue for an answer.

Support when things don't go to plan

Nobody books a holiday expecting disruption, but unfortunately it does happen.

Weather events, airline strikes, cancelled flights, political situations or unexpected travel restrictions can all have an impact.

If you've booked everything yourself, you're often left trying to contact multiple companies and work out your options.

When you book through me, you have someone in your corner helping you navigate those situations. I'll work with suppliers, explain your options and do everything I can to get you travelling again as quickly as possible.

Hopefully you'll never need that support, but when you do, it can be invaluable.

Booking with a travel agent doesn't usually cost more

This is probably the biggest misconception I come across.

Many people assume booking through a travel agent means paying extra fees.

In most cases, it doesn't.

Like many travel agents, I'm paid by the travel supplier, not by adding extra costs onto your holiday. The price is often exactly the same as booking direct, but with the added benefit of having an experienced travel professional looking after everything from start to finish.

You gain personalised advice, ongoing support and someone to turn to if you need help, all without paying more simply because you've booked through me.

Financial protection and trusted suppliers

When you book through Travel Counsellors, your holiday is arranged through carefully selected suppliers and comes with the relevant financial protection, giving you added confidence when you travel.

You're also benefiting from the buying power and trusted relationships of one of the UK's largest independent travel companies, while still enjoying the personal service of working with your own dedicated travel expert.

Supporting a small business

Every enquiry and every booking genuinely means something to me.

When you choose to book with a small independent business, you're supporting someone who is invested in delivering exceptional service, not just completing another transaction.

Most of my business comes from repeat clients and personal recommendations, so every trip I arrange matters. I want you to come back for your next holiday and to feel confident recommending me to your friends, family and colleagues.

It's about more than booking a holiday

At the end of the day, anyone can click a button on a website.

What I offer is guidance, reassurance, experience and support before, during and after your trip.

Whether you're travelling for business, planning your dream honeymoon or simply looking for your next family holiday, my job is to make the whole experience easier, less stressful and more enjoyable.

If you're thinking about your next trip, I'd love to help.
