Venice - stunning city on the water

Venice weekend

Birthday trip with my hubby and travel buddy to Venice

Venice, really does live up to all the hype. From iconic sights such as the Rialto Bridge and St Marks Square, The Basilica to just wandering the streets and getting lost in Venice. Every inch of this beautiful city is worth your time.

Rialto

Literally 2 minutes away from the busy Rialto Bridge you find yourselves in quieter streets, filled with Venetian charm.

We arrived on a water taxi from the Airport which was really lovely, and when you enter the city it is like any movie of Venice you have ever seen.

Arriving into Venice

We stayed in a beautiful little hidden hotel amongst the back streets, about a 10-minute walk from the water taxi. It was truly Venetian in style and really welcoming. Rooms in Venice can be on the small side but remember you won’t be there much as you will be out exploring this wonderful city.

Our first day we did most of the main sights, St Marks Square, The Basilica, Rialto. And had time to explore a bit further and found wonderful bars from where we sampled Ciccheti. Which a local taps style treat. Mostly bread with varying topping on. They are so cheap, filling and tasty. Washed down with an Aperol it was the perfect way to rest for an hour or so before continuing to explore. We also stumbled on a very cute book store, filled with old books, lots of cats and a bridge made out of books right on the Canal side. Very cool indeed.

On our next day we took a water taxi and spent the day exploring Murano and Burano, filled with beautiful, coloured houses. We explored the hidden houses and treat ourselves to a lovely Murano glass Christmas ornament. In Burano you will see lace everywhere.

Our last day we decided to turn the maps off and just get lost in Venice. This was just fabulous. We found little local cafes and spent hours coming to dead ends and finding another way through. I would highly recommend this is you are lucky enough to go.

Prisoners BridgeThe obligatory Gondola ride is worth the fee. The skills they have in navigating the narrow canals is a sight to see.

Our last night was spent eating dinner at the side of the water watching the sun go down on another successful adventure.
