Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon): A City of History, Energy and Unforgettable Experiences

Arriving in Vietnam’s largest city is an experience in itself. The first thing you notice is the energy. The streets are alive with scooters, street food stalls, cafés, markets and a constant flow of people going about their daily lives. It feels busy, vibrant and a little chaotic at first, but very quickly you begin to understand the rhythm of the city.

Travelling with our two teenage sons, aged 18 and 16, we wanted our first stop to offer a real introduction to Vietnam: a mix of history, culture, food and experiences. Ho Chi Minh City delivered exactly that.

For me, experiencing destinations first-hand is one of the most important parts of my role as a travel expert. It allows me to recommend places based on genuine experience, including what works well for different types of travellers. Ho Chi Minh City is a destination that offers something for everyone, whether you are visiting for the first time, travelling as a family or looking to understand more about Vietnam’s fascinating history.

Exploring Ho Chi Minh City’s History and Culture

One of the things we loved about Ho Chi Minh City was the contrast between old and new.

Modern skyscrapers sit alongside beautiful French colonial buildings, traditional pagodas are tucked between busy streets and reminders of Vietnam’s complex history can be found throughout the city.

We explored the city on a private Jeep tour, which was a brilliant way to get our bearings and visit some of the key sights. We visited some of the city’s most iconic landmarks,, including the beautiful Emperor Jade Pagoda, the Central Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Reunification Palace and the War Remnants Museum.

The city’s history is fascinating and, at times, confronting. The War Remnants Museum provides a powerful insight into the Vietnam War and is an important visit for anyone wanting to understand the country beyond the beautiful scenery and food. It is not an easy visit, but it is an important one and helped provide context for many of the places we visited throughout our journey.

We also explored Ben Thanh Market, one of Saigon’s most famous markets. It is a great place to experience local life, browse souvenirs and practise your bargaining skills. For history lovers, it is also interesting to see a market that has been such an important part of the city’s identity for generations.

Experiences We Loved

One of our biggest highlights was something I was initially quite nervous about: a Back of the Bike Street Food Tour.

Anyone who has seen Ho Chi Minh City’s traffic will understand why the idea of climbing onto the back of a motorbike through the city streets was slightly daunting! The sheer number of scooters weaving through the streets looks overwhelming at first, but the drivers were incredibly professional and the experience quickly became one of the highlights of the whole trip.

Riding through the city in the evening, stopping at local food spots and discovering dishes away from the main tourist areas gave us a completely different perspective of Saigon. It was exciting, fun and one of the experiences that the whole family still talks about.

Another memorable experience was visiting the Cu Chi Tunnels, travelling there by boat along the Saigon River. The tunnels provide a fascinating insight into the resilience and ingenuity of the Vietnamese people during the war, and arriving by river made the journey feel like part of the adventure.

Of course, food was a huge part of our Ho Chi Minh City experience. Fresh herbs, vegetables, noodles, seafood and incredible flavours make Vietnamese cuisine such a joy to explore, and we found plenty of options that worked well for our family.

Why We Loved It and Who It Suits

Ho Chi Minh City is an excellent introduction to Vietnam because it offers such a broad range of experiences. We stayed long enough to experience the city’s highlights, but Ho Chi Minh City is somewhere you could easily spend several days exploring. It is vibrant, fascinating and full of surprises.

History enthusiasts will love the museums and landmarks. Food lovers will be spoilt for choice. Families will appreciate the variety of activities, from markets and street food tours to cultural experiences and adventures such as the Cu Chi Tunnels.

For families, it works particularly well because it offers the perfect mix of history, culture, food and adventure. For first-time visitors to Vietnam, it is a brilliant place to begin.  The city feels exciting and different, rather than simply being a place to visit historical sites. The street food, markets and motorbike tour gave our boys experiences they wouldn’t have at home.

It is a city that encourages you to get involved rather than just observe.

Practical Tips: How Many Nights Do You Need and Where Should You Stay?

I would recommend allowing at least 3 nights in Ho Chi Minh City, particularly if it is your first visit to Vietnam.

This gives you enough time to experience the city highlights without rushing, while also allowing time for one of the excellent excursions outside the city, such as the Cu Chi Tunnels or a Mekong Delta experience.

Choosing the right location is important. Staying somewhere central makes exploring much easier, particularly if you want to experience the city on foot in the evenings. Areas around District 1 are popular with first-time visitors because they provide easy access to many of the main sights, restaurants and shopping areas.

Ho Chi Minh City works particularly well as an arrival point because it immediately immerses you in Vietnamese life. It provides a great balance of history, culture, food and energy before moving on to the more relaxed destinations further north.

My biggest tip? Don’t be intimidated by the traffic. Embrace the energy, get out and explore, and allow yourself to be swept up in the atmosphere of this incredible city.

It is the perfect place to begin a Vietnam adventure.
