Antigua & Barbuda: Beaches, Flavours And Barefoot Luxury

Paul Sharp on 11 Jun 2026

Some places feel like a reward the moment you arrive. Antigua and Barbuda is one of those rare destinations: a twin-island gem where the sea shifts from turquoise to blue-black, the hills roll in velvety green, and every cove seems to promise your new favourite beach. Along with 20 other Travel Counsellors, I recently spent a week on a top performers incentive trip, moving between some of the island’s finest resorts, exploring hidden bays, tasting local rum and lingering over long, lazy lunches by the water. It was the kind of trip that reminds you how good a Caribbean escape can be when you slow down, choose the right places to stay and let the destination work its magic. If you are dreaming of a luxury holiday in the Caribbean, here is a taste of how Antigua & Barbuda can unfold.

A Warm Antiguan Welcome

The experience began at Heathrow where we were hosted by Virgin Atlantic for our flight to Antigua (during the summer months, the flight operates via Barbados, which was very simple and you do not even leave the aircraft)

Arriving into Antigua in the late afternoon, the island greets you immediately: soft tropical air, flashes of bougainvillea and the sparkle of the sea just beyond the runway. After a quick transfer, we reached our first base, the elegant Blue Waters Resort.

Blue Waters - the view from my room

Checking in here feels like entering a private coastal estate: manicured gardens, tucked-away pools, calm bays and suites where you can step out onto your balcony and breathe in the ocean. With time to freshen up and settle in, the trip truly began that evening with a barefoot Beach BBQ on the sand.

As the sky glowed pink and orange, we dined on freshly grilled seafood and Caribbean favourites, toes in the sand, listening to the gentle roll of the waves. For couples and friends, it is the perfect first-night experience: relaxed, romantic and effortlessly atmospheric.

Exploring Antigua By Land & Sea

The next morning began with a leisurely breakfast overlooking the water, coffee in hand and the day stretching out invitingly. Antigua is an island of contrasts, and one of the best ways to appreciate it is to head inland…our guides joked that nothing in Antigua is more than 45 minutes from anywhere else

Tropical Adventure Jeep Safari Discovery Tour offers exactly that. In open vehicles, we wound through lush hillsides and quiet villages, discovering viewpoints that reveal the island in all its rugged beauty. It is an ideal half-day for travellers who like a touch of adventure but still want to be back on the beach by afternoon.

Evenings at Blue Waters have a refined, grown-up feel. One highlight was dinner at The Cove Restaurant, a chic clifftop setting where candlelight, sea views and beautifully presented dishes create a truly special night out. It is the sort of place where you dress up a little, linger over dessert and order that extra glass of wine simply because you can.

From Classic Elegance To Contemporary Calm

After soaking up the charms of Blue Waters, we switched scenery, giving a real insight into how easily you can combine different parts of Antigua in one holiday.

A lazy Saturday morning by the pool gave way to a scenic coastal drive and a stop at OJ’s Beach Bar and Restaurant: rustic, colourful and full of character. Here, you can sit above the water, enjoy grilled fish and watch boats bob in the bay. It feels deliciously unhurried and wonderfully Caribbean.

From there, we continued to our next host hotel, Carlisle Bay Resort & Spa, tucked between emerald mountains and a sweeping crescent of sand. The look and feel here is modern and understated: dark woods, cool linens and a long, sheltered bay that seems made for morning swims and sunset strolls. It suits couples and families alike, especially those who appreciate a more contemporary style but still want that castaway Caribbean setting.

Dinner on property that evening brought everything together: lanterns, the sound of the surf and a sense of having properly arrived in “holiday mode”.

Perfect Beach Days & Iconic Caribbean Sunsets

Antigua’s greatest luxury is its coastline, and our Sunday showed this off beautifully. After breakfast at Carlisle Bay, we headed to Fryer’s Beach for a long, sun-drenched lunch and time to relax.

Imagine soft, pale sand, clear water that invites you straight in, and enough space to stretch out with a book or simply gaze at the horizon. This is what Antigua does best: easy, unpretentious days in beautiful surroundings where someone else keeps the drinks topped up and the timing relaxed.

Later in the day, we experienced one of Antigua’s most iconic evenings at Shirley Heights. This legendary viewpoint overlooks English Harbour and is famous for its Sunday Sunset BBQ. Steel band music drifts on the air, the scent of jerk spices and grilled meats fills the breeze, and the sun sinks behind a jumble of masts in the harbour below. It is romantic, atmospheric and distinctly Caribbean, with just the right mix of local flavour and simple joy.

The Rum Academy: Antigua In A Glass

If you enjoy a good rum or simply love trying something unique (and lots of fun) on holiday, The Rum Academy is exceptional.

Set in an open, sea-view space near one of Antigua’s prettiest bays, the West Indies Rum Academy runs an immersive “make your own rum” masterclass. We sat at our own miniature copper stills, in a light, breezy classroom that feels part chemistry lab, part Caribbean cocktail hour, with the ocean as a backdrop.

Rum Academy

Rather than simply tasting a line-up of rums, you actually create your own. Guided by passionate rum experts, you choose your flavour profile, explore different botanicals and spices, and learn how Caribbean rum has evolved from traditional sugar estates to modern small-batch styles. There is plenty of storytelling, sensory tasting and laughter along the way.

What makes it so brilliant is how personal and memorable it feels:

  • You distil, flavour, name and bottle your own rum to take home, using traditional West Indian techniques with a contemporary twist.
  • The session is expert-led but relaxed, so you come away with a deeper understanding of the spirit and the island’s heritage, without anything feeling stuffy or formal.
  • With the Caribbean Sea just beyond, it feels wonderfully rooted in place: every sip is linked to the landscapes and history around you.

In our group, everyone emerged proudly clutching their own bottle, comparing flavours and joking about who had created the “best” house blend. It quickly became one of those experiences that people said they would book again on their next visit.

Nicole’s Table: Antigua On A Plate

If The Rum Academy is Antigua in a glass, Nicole’s Table is the island on a plate.

Hosted in Nicole’s own home in the hills above St John’s, this is far more than a standard cooking class. You arrive at a welcoming Caribbean house, step onto a wide verandah and are immediately met with breezes, views towards the sea and the smell of spices starting to warm in the kitchen.

Classes are small and intimate, so it feels like being invited to lunch by friends rather than joining a tour. With a rum punch or local drink in hand, you gather around generous workspaces and start chopping, marinating and tasting.

Nicole is a natural host: warm, extremely funny and full of stories drawn from growing up in the Caribbean food world. She guides you through recipes that showcase the region’s flavours: perhaps jerk chicken or pork, fresh fish with pineapple salsa, fragrant curries, rice and peas, and something sweet and rum-laced to finish (well it is Antigua after all!)

Along the way you pick up techniques you can recreate at home, without ever feeling rushed or out of your depth.

What makes Nicole’s Table so special:

  • It is genuinely hands-on, but never stressful: you cook at a sociable pace, nibbling on snacks (hot salted plantain chips are now a firm favourite with us all!), chatting and tasting as you go.
  • You gain a true insight into Caribbean home cooking and culture, not just restaurant dishes.
  • When you finally sit down together at the long table to enjoy what you have made, it feels like a long, lazy Sunday lunch with friends you have known for years.

For food-loving couples, solo travellers and small groups of friends, it is a must-do. In our case, it was one of the most talked-about days of the trip, with everyone saying it was the experience that made them feel closest to the “real” Antigua.

Checking In To Chic Coastal Living

For the last two nights of the trip, we moved again, this time to the stylish Hodges Bay Resort & Spa. Here, the atmosphere shifts to modern, beach-club chic: sleek lines, contemporary interiors, inviting pools and a cool, relaxed energy.

This is a fantastic choice for couples’ escapes or friends travelling together who want a luxury base with a fashionable, sociable feel. Spend the morning around the pool with a book, head to the spa in the afternoon, then dress up for sunset cocktails before dinner.

One evening, we visited Beach Limerz, a laid-back beachfront restaurant and bar where sand, sea and soul all collide. It is fun, relaxed and full of local character, perfect for those nights when you want to feel part of the island rather than simply a guest in a resort.

Discovering Antigua’s Best Retreats

For anyone planning a luxury escape, seeing a variety of properties is invaluable, and Antigua really shines with its range of premium resorts.

From Hodges Bay, we set out to visit some of the island’s standout names. Galley Bay Resort & Spa is a dreamy choice for adults seeking romance and seclusion, with lush gardens and a long, quiet beach.

Adults only Pineapple Beach Club offers a more laid-back, sociable ambience, with its famous rustic Outhouse serving up delicious food and big views over the bay.

Each resort has its own personality: some are intimate and boutique, others all-inclusive and social, and others still feel like private villas set within a resort. What they share is that quintessential Antiguan blend of warmth, natural beauty and easygoing luxury.

We also planned time at Prickly Pear Island, a tiny offshore sand-fringed dot surrounded by clear, shallow water. It is exactly the kind of place you might spend an afternoon snorkelling, lazing in the sun and feeling, just for a moment, as though you have your own private island, and it is just a 6 minute, free boat ride from Hodges Bay and the boats run every 30 minutes .

Our final evening was a Farewell Dinner at Hodges Bay, marking the end of our stay with fine food, good wine and definitely the desire to come back to Antigua again.

A Goodbye To Antigua, But With A Promise To Return

On our departure day, we enjoyed a last leisurely breakfast and some final hours by the pool before checking out. Lunch at the resort gave us one more chance to savour the flavours of Antigua before making the short journey back to V. C. Bird International Airport for our evening flight home.

As the island slipped away beneath the plane, what lingered were not just images of white sand and turquoise water, but the feeling that Antigua & Barbuda offers something deeply restorative: space, warmth and a pace of life that allows you to truly switch off.

Why Choose Antigua & Barbuda For Your Next Luxury Holiday
