Las Vegas beyond the casino floor!
Whenever I say I am going to Las Vegas on holiday, people always ask “are you a gambler then?” My answer is yes but that’s not the reason we go! Las Vegas might be famous for its slot machines, poker tables and neon lights, but you can have an incredible week here without placing a single bet. The desert landscapes are stunning, you can see a world class show, entertainers such as Barry Manilow and Bruno Mars, DJ’s have residences all summer such as Calvin Harris, Tiesto etc the pools are amazing, the food ranges from fast food all the way up to Michelin star and everything in-between! It really is a destination that has everything (even a beach!) So after 22 visits, here is my seven day guide to enjoying Las Vegas beyond the casino floor!
Day 1: Arrive, settle in and soak up the atmosphere
- If you are flying from the UK most flights arrive later in the day which isn’t a bad thing as by the time you arrive you’ll have been travelling for 24 hours with the time difference and 11 hour flight!
- We like to try and stay up as late as we can so the jetlag doesn’t kick in and we are wide awake at 3am so grab a drink of choice and head onto the strip, take a stroll grab something to eat and take it all in!
- Head to the nearest CVS or ABC store and grab some essentials such as water, snacks for your room and any drinks as it’s much cheaper than buying in the hotel and don’t touch that mini bar !!!! I’d even try and watch the famous Bellagio fountain shows so you know you are in Vegas!
Tip: Ask for a room with a Strip or mountain view if possible: waking up to the desert or strip is amazing and there’s always so much going on
Day 2: Hoover Dam & Lake Mead
Head out to explore some of the amazing scenery just outside the city.
- Morning: Join a guided trip to the Hoover Dam. You can walk across the dam, learn about its history and enjoy incredible views down into Black Canyon.
- Afternoon: Combine it with time at Lake Mead: boat cruise, gentle kayaking or simply relaxing by the water. It is a complete contrast to the buzz of the Strip and you realise you are in the middle of a desert!
- Evening: Back in Vegas, keep it relaxed with a casual dinner and perhaps a drink with a view at one of the rooftop bars.
Tip! You can also do a Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon day trip by coach if you wanted to miss out Lake Mead. These tours are great as they are small guided tours and you make a few stops along the way for some great photo opportunities!
Day 3: Grand Canyon adventure
- There are many ways you can see the Grand Canyon, choose from a helicopter, small plane or a group coach tour to the West Rim or, for a full‑on experience, a day trip to the South Rim.
- Walk out onto the Skywalk (if you are brave enough and don’t mind heights!), soak up the views and take plenty of photos.
- You will be tired when you get back so I wouldn’t plan anything and there are plenty of places to grab some food at the food courts
Day 4: Fremont Street and Downtown
You can’t go to Las Vegas and not go downtown to Fremont Street.
· Fremont Street - A step back in time to old Vegas. Imagine a few city blocks covered by a massive LED canopy that plays light shows overhead while live bands, street performers, zipliners, tourists, and people in full Elvis costumes all compete for your attention at once.
· You can easily spend all day here visiting all the casino’s, different restaurants, head to the Container Park.
· I would stay for the evening though to really see that LED canopy and the Fremont Street Experience!
Tip! Head Binions Casino and up to the second floor to Whiskey Licker Up bar. It’s the only rotating bar in Las Vegas and is great for people watching the drinks are good too!
Day 5: Area15, interactive fun & evening show
Today is all about immersive fun back in the city.
- Area15:
- Explore this surreal, immersive entertainment district with art installations, experiences, VR activities and bars. It feels more like stepping into a sci‑fi film than a traditional attraction.
- Add in extra fun such as:
- Indoor karting or zip lines
- Escape rooms or immersive game experiences
- Evening:
- Book one of the big Las Vegas shows: Cirque du Soleil, a headline residency, a magic show or a concert. These are a real highlight
Day 6: Golf, darts, pool parties & nightlife
Las Vegas does daytime sports very well too.
- Golf:
- Las Vegas offers a fantastic variety of mini-golf experiences, ranging from immersive glow-in-the-dark courses to upscale putting tracks with craft drinks, try Pop Stroke (Tiger Woods designed this one!)
- Darts:
- You’ll find Flight Club at the Venetian, an up scale digital Darts venue that serves great food and drinks all day long
- Pool party or chilled pool day:
- Depending on your style, either head to a lively pool party with DJs and cabanas or choose a quieter adults‑only pool for a more relaxed day with cocktails and a book.
- Nightlife without the casino:
- Finish with cocktails at a stylish lounge, a rooftop bar or a speakeasy style bar hidden behind a shopfront.
Day 7: Shopping, brunch & one last wander
Keep your last day relaxed with plenty of time to pack and soak it all in.
- Enjoy a long brunch and people watch! Alexxas or Mon Ami Gabi are my favourites for brunch and the head up to Beer Park to people watch and for great views of the fountains one last time (they start at 3pm)
- Hit the shops: Las Vegas has everything from high‑end designer boutiques to outlet malls, so you can pick up gifts, fashion or even that extra suitcase you suddenly need.
- Take one final stroll along the Strip or into Downtown to see the street performers and light shows before you head to the airport.
Practical tips for a non‑gambling week in Las Vegas
- Choose the right hotel: Pick a resort that has great pools, dining and maybe a spa, so you never feel you “need” the casino for entertainment. I highly recommend Vdara having stayed there recently it doesn’t even have a casino but has all the facilities you’d expect and as its part of Aria you also get to use their facilities too!
- Plan your day trips/restaurant reservations in advance: Popular excursions to the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam and the national parks can sell out, as can certain restaurants such as Hells Kitchen especially at peak times make sure you book in advance
- Pace yourself: The combination of desert heat, jet lag and late nights can catch up with you. Plan alternate “big” days out with slower, resort‑based days.
- Budget for experiences, not tables: Set aside money for shows, tours, pool days and dining instead of gambling, so you can enjoy every moment guilt‑free.
Las Vegas is so much more than blackjack and slot machines. With the right planning, it becomes a base for some of the most memorable landscapes in the USA, incredible food, live entertainment and a lot of fun in the sun, without ever needing to step up to a gaming table.
