Catered Chalet Alpe D'Huez with Inghams

a last minute chalet availability too good to pass up.

Sometimes the best trips are the ones you never planned. When an incredible last-minute catered chalet deal to Alpe d'Huez appeared with Inghams, it was simply too good to ignore.

Recent snowfall had transformed the resort into a winter wonderland, and with snow conditions looking exceptional, we knew we had to grab the opportunity.

Chalet Secret de Neige

A colleague and I managed to secure a room in the chalet, and remarkably all the remaining rooms sold out within 48 hours. We suspect it had become available following a cancellation, but whatever the reason, it turned out to be a fantastic find.

Journey to the Mountains

Our adventure began with a flight from Manchester to Chambery. Before long we were winding our way through the French Alps, even managing to watch the rugby on the coach transfer while enjoying the increasingly spectacular mountain scenery.

At the bottom of the valley, we transferred to a taxi while the main coach continued onwards to Les Deux Alpes. The recent snowfall had been so significant that our taxi couldn't quite reach the chalet itself, leaving us at a nearby road junction to make the final short walk through the snow. It was the perfect introduction to what would be an unforgettable ski week.

Chalet Life

social time in the chalet - all dining together

On arrival, we received a warm welcome from our chalet hosts, Fionn and Josh, and quickly met our fellow guests. One of the joys of chalet holidays is the people you meet, and this group was no exception. There were couples, friends travelling together and family members, creating a wonderfully varied and friendly atmosphere from the outset.

The chalet was superbly positioned, just a short walk from both the slopes and the ski hire shop. After collecting our equipment and settling in, we discovered another bonus – a dedicated boot room where we could store all our gear each evening.

That first night set the tone for the week. Ffion and Josh prepared a spectacular meal, and we also met the resort manager who stopped by to introduce himself. The standard of hospitality throughout the week was exceptional.our hosts Josh and Fionn

Skiing in Snow Heaven

Our first morning saw us heading straight up the gondola to stretch our ski legs and explore the mountain. Conditions were fantastic thanks to the recent snowfall, and after a day of cruising the pistes, we finished at the famous Folie Douce.

Anyone who has visited knows exactly why it's so popular. Great music, lively atmosphere, a bit of dancing in ski boots and plenty of laughter made for the perfect après-ski experience.

Returning to the chalet mid-afternoon, we were greeted with freshly baked chocolate cake as part of afternoon tea. We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing on the balcony, enjoying the mountain views while playing Scrabble and catching up on a little work.

Fantastic Food All Week

One of the highlights of the week was undoubtedly the food.

Every evening brought something different. We enjoyed baked Camembert followed by chicken one night, a magnificent charcuterie board and tartiflette on another, and delicious homemade soups and hearty main courses throughout the week.

The chalet catering was consistently excellent and we were genuinely spoiled.

Lunchtimes were spent exploring different mountain restaurants across the ski area. We made a point of trying somewhere new each day, which became part of the adventure.

Exploring Alpe d'Huez

The snow conditions remained excellent all week, allowing us to explore almost every corner of the vast ski area.

One highlight was tackling the legendary 16-kilometre La Sarenne run from the very top of the mountain. We managed it twice during the week and it remains one of the most memorable descents in the Alps.

We also spent plenty of time skiing over in Auris on the opposite side of the valley. By the end of the holiday, we felt we'd covered virtually the entire resort.

Alpe d'Huez really does cater for all abilities. Whether you're a beginner finding your confidence, an intermediate looking for endless cruising runs, or an experienced skier wanting a challenge, there's something here for everyone.

A couple of days we teamed up with some of our fellow chalet guests on the slopes. It's another wonderful aspect of chalet holidays – sharing experiences and making new friends along the way.

A Fondue Feast

Wednesday is traditionally the chalet staff's evening off, so Ffion and Josh kindly helped us book a local fondue and raclette restaurant.

Along with a couple of our chalet companions, we enjoyed a fantastic evening of melted cheese, good wine and plenty of laughter. As is usually the case with fondue and raclette, we all ate far more than intended!

A Different Side of the Resort

One of the unexpected highlights came on Thursday evening.

Before dinner, we wandered down to the local church where a piano and organ recital was taking place. The concert lasted around an hour and featured a mixture of classical and modern pieces.

The church itself was beautiful, and it was lovely to experience a quieter, more cultural side of the resort away from the slopes.

That evening's dinner featured pumpkin soup followed by duck, and afterwards many of us stayed up in the chalet playing games and chatting late into the evening.

Final Thoughts

Looking back, this was one of those trips where everything came together perfectly.

The snow conditions were outstanding, the skiing was varied and exciting, the chalet was in a fantastic location, and the hospitality from Ffion and Josh was exceptional throughout. The rooms were warm, comfortable and welcoming after long days on the mountain.

Most importantly, we shared the experience with a wonderful group of people who helped make the week so memorable.

For a last-minute booking that almost didn't happen, it turned out to be one of the best-value ski holidays I've ever enjoyed.best selfie backdrop ever!piste pose

If you ever spot a late chalet deal to Alpe d'Huez when the snow is falling, don't hesitate. It might just become one of your favourite ski trips too.
