Chalet Secret de Neige: A Snow‑Perfect Ski Week in Alpe d’Huez

Recent snowfall had transformed Alpe d’Huez into a true winter wonderland. With snow conditions looking exceptional and blue skies in the forecast, we knew we had to grab the opportunity for a last‑minute ski holiday in the French Alps.

A Lucky Last‑Minute Chalet Find

We managed to secure a room at Chalet Secret de Neige in Alpe d’Huez, and within 48 hours all the remaining rooms had sold out. We suspect our spot appeared due to a late cancellation, but whatever the reason, it turned out to be an absolute gem of a chalet in Alpe d’Huez.

Journey to the Mountains: Manchester to Alpe d’Huez

Our adventure began with a flight from Manchester to Chambéry, the perfect gateway airport for ski holidays in the French Alps. Before long, we were winding our way up through the mountains on our coach transfer, watching the rugby on board while the scenery outside became increasingly dramatic: snowy peaks, pretty villages and fresh powder everywhere.

At the bottom of the valley we transferred to a taxi while the main coach continued on to Les Deux Alpes. So much snow had fallen that our taxi could not quite make it up to the chalet doorstep, so we were dropped at a nearby junction and walked the final short stretch through deep snow with our bags. It was a magical introduction to what would become an unforgettable Alpe d’Huez ski holiday.

Chalet Life: Sociable, Cosy and Effortless

On arrival at Chalet Secret de Neige, we were warmly welcomed by our chalet hosts, Ffion and Josh, and quickly introduced to the rest of the guests. One of the great joys of chalet ski holidays is the people you meet, and this group was no exception. There were couples, groups of friends and family members travelling together, which created a relaxed, friendly and sociable atmosphere right from the start.

The chalet is superbly positioned, just a short walk from both the slopes and the ski hire shop, which made getting on the mountain each morning incredibly easy. After picking up our equipment and settling into our room, we discovered another big plus: a dedicated boot room to store skis, boards and boots, keeping everything tidy and warm for the next day.

That first evening set the tone for the whole week. Ffion and Josh prepared a delicious three‑course dinner and the resort manager popped by to introduce himself and answer any questions. The standard of hospitality and personal service throughout the week was outstanding and really elevated the whole Alpe d’Huez chalet holiday experience.

Skiing “Snow Heaven” in Alpe d’Huez

The next morning we headed straight up the gondola for our first ski of the week. Thanks to the recent snowfall, the pistes were in fantastic condition, with soft, forgiving snow and beautifully groomed runs. It was the perfect start to stretch our legs and explore the wider Alpe d’Huez Grand Domaine ski area.

After a full day cruising the pistes we finished, as so many do, at the famous La Folie Douce Alpe d’Huez. If you have been before, you will already know why it is such a popular après‑ski spot: great music, live performers, a lively atmosphere and lots of dancing in ski boots. It is the kind of place where you end up staying for “just one more song”.

Back at the chalet mid‑afternoon, we were greeted with freshly baked chocolate cake and a proper afternoon tea spread. We spent the rest of the day relaxing on the balcony, soaking up the mountain views, playing Scrabble and even catching up on a little work. If you ever dream of turning the Alps into your “office”, this is exactly what it feels like.

Exceptional Chalet Food All Week

One of the real highlights of this Alpe d’Huez ski chalet stay was the food.

Every evening brought something different, and the standard never dipped. Over the week we enjoyed:

  • Baked Camembert followed by tender chicken
  • A magnificent charcuterie board and traditional tartiflette
  • Homemade soups, hearty main courses and indulgent desserts

We genuinely felt spoiled every single night. It was restaurant‑quality food with the relaxed, friendly feel of a private dinner party.

At lunchtime we made a point of exploring different mountain restaurants in Alpe d’Huez, trying somewhere new each day. From sunny terraces with panoramic views to cosy huts serving steaks and local specialities, discovering new spots for lunch became part of the adventure.

Exploring the Alpe d’Huez Ski Area

With snow conditions staying consistently excellent, we were able to explore almost every corner of this vast, high‑altitude and generally snow‑sure French ski resort.

One of the standout moments was skiing the legendary La Sarenne run, one of the longest black runs in Europe at around 16 kilometres. Starting from the very top of the mountain and dropping all the way back to the valley, it is a true bucket‑list descent. We were so taken with it that we tackled La Sarenne twice during the week, and it remains one of my most memorable ski runs anywhere in the Alps.

We also spent plenty of time skiing over to Auris on the opposite side of the valley, as well as exploring the wide‑open blues and reds closer to resort. By the end of the week, it felt as though we had covered almost the entire Alpe d’Huez ski area.

The resort really does cater for all abilities:

  • Gentle nursery slopes for beginners
  • Long, confidence‑building blue and red runs for intermediates
  • Steeper blacks and off‑piste options for more advanced skiers and snowboarders

A couple of days we teamed up with fellow chalet guests and skied as a group, which added to the fun. It is one of the lovely aspects of a social chalet holiday: you can share the experience, pick up tips and often leave with new ski friends.

Fondue Feast on Chalet Night Off

Wednesday is traditionally the chalet staff’s evening off, so Ffion and Josh kindly helped us book a table at a local fondue and raclette restaurant, La Pomme de Pin.

Along with a couple of our chalet companions, we settled in for a classic Alpine evening of melted cheese, charcuterie, good wine and plenty of laughter. As is so often the case with fondue and raclette, we all ate much more than we intended, but it was absolutely worth it and a real highlight of our Alpe d’Huez après‑ski.

A Different Side to Alpe d’Huez

One of the more unexpected highlights came on Thursday evening, when we decided to explore a quieter, more cultural side to the resort.

Before dinner, we walked down to the local church for a piano and organ recital. The concert lasted about an hour and included a mix of classical and more modern pieces. The church itself was beautiful, with lovely acoustics, and it was a wonderful contrast to the busy bars and buzzing slopes.

Back at the chalet that night we enjoyed pumpkin soup followed by duck, then stayed up playing games and chatting with our fellow guests. It was one of those evenings that perfectly captures the spirit of chalet life: relaxed, sociable and very easy‑going.

Final Thoughts: Why I Loved This Alpe d’Huez Ski Holiday

Looking back, this was one of those ski trips where everything came together perfectly.

  • The snow conditions were outstanding from start to finish.
  • The skiing was varied and exciting, with everything from gentle cruisy blues to the famous La Sarenne black run.
  • The chalet location was excellent, close to the lifts and ski hire.
  • The hospitality from Ffion and Josh was exceptional throughout.
  • Our room was warm, comfortable and welcoming after long days on the mountain.

Most importantly, we shared the week with a fantastic group of people, which made the holiday even more memorable.
