Why Villa Holidays are Perfect for Multigenerational Families and Groups
Every one is different - how to get it right!
Planning a holiday that keeps grandparents, parents, teenagers and little ones all happy can feel like a logistical puzzle. Different routines, different energy levels, different ideas of “relaxing” – and only one trip to get it right. This is exactly where a villa holiday comes into its own, especially for multigenerational family holidays and group trips. If you are weighing up villa vs hotel for your next family holiday abroad, here are some of the main arguments and why a private villa can be the perfect solution.
Villa vs hotel for multigenerational holidays
1. Space and privacy
In a hotel, even booking several rooms often means you are spread along a corridor or even across different floors. In a family villa, everyone is under one roof, but with their own bedrooms and bathrooms. Grandparents can retreat for a quiet afternoon nap, babies can sleep undisturbed, and teens can spread out without taking over the whole space.
Open‑plan living areas, shady terraces and a private pool mean you can all be together without being on top of one another.
2. Flexible routines
On a multigenerational holiday, no one keeps the same schedule:
- Babies need naps and early nights
- Teens might not surface before midday
- Grandparents may prefer relaxed mornings and earlier dinners
In a self‑catering villa, this is easy. You are not tied to hotel buffet times, dress codes or fixed restaurant sittings. Breakfast can happen whenever people wake up, and if someone wants a late‑night swim in the private swimming pool, they are free to do so.
3. Cost‑effective for larger groups
At first glance, a luxury villa holiday can look more expensive than a hotel. But once you divide the cost across three generations, two or three families or a group of friends, it often works out very competitively compared to several hotel rooms or suites, particularly in peak school holiday dates.
You also have the option to cook some meals in, enjoy barbecues and make the most of the villa’s facilities, which can help control spending once you are away.
4. Quality time together
One of the biggest reasons my clients choose large villas for family holidays is simple: time together.
You can:
- Lounge around the pool chatting without clock‑watching
- Have long, relaxed family dinners on the terrace
- Set up games tournaments in the garden or games room
- Enjoy film nights in a cinema room or cosy lounge
You are not split between different hotel bars or trying to find ten seats together by the pool. The villa becomes your shared home for the week.
5. Comfort for older travellers and little ones
For grandparents or anyone with mobility concerns, being able to potter between bedroom, living area, terrace and private pool without stairs, lifts or long walks is a real benefit. For young children, having familiar surroundings, a kitchen for snacks and milk, and quiet spaces away from any crowds can make the whole family villa holiday much more relaxing.
6. A “home from home” with extra luxury
Modern holiday villas geared towards families and groups often include:
- Ensuite bedrooms
- Air conditioning
- Wi‑Fi
- Outdoor kitchens and barbecues
- Infinity pools or heated pools
- Games rooms, table tennis and cinema rooms
So you get the comfort and familiarity of a home with the special touches that make it feel like a luxury escape.
I have taken my very own multi generational family away to a few different luxury villa in Corfu over the years as this seemed a perfect way to spend quality time together and suited all of our ages – you can read all about our most recent villa holiday here including a full villa walkthrough on instagram which can be seen here (remember to 'like' and follow me for more on Instagram)
