Dreaming of an autumn escape? 5 destinations & why a travel advisor makes all the difference

Autumn Holiday Ideas: 5 Beautiful Escapes

Samantha Price on 01 Oct 2026

I grew up spending a lot of time in Germany, in and around Mainz, and October on the Rhine is still the season I picture when I close my eyes. The vineyards turn gold, the air gets crisp and everything feels slower and cosier. I didn't realise it then, but those autumns shaped how I think about travel. Now, with two kids, a school run and a very full inbox, I crave that feeling more than ever.

If you're dreaming of something similar, here are five places that really come alive in autumn. They're all worth planning for next year, when you can get the trip exactly as you picture it.

Autumn on the Rhine: Vineyards, Castles and Cosy Wine Taverns

This is where my love of autumn began. Mainz sits right where the Rhine meets wine country, and in October the vineyards turn golden and the whole region seems to slow down. I remember sitting with my pairs at a vineyard, they had converted a very large wine barrel to hold a table and chairs and we were looking out to the river.

I still remember sitting with my parents at a vineyard where they'd turned an enormous wine barrel into a little dining nook, with a table and chairs tucked inside and the river stretching out in front of us. It's a small moment, but it's stayed with me for years.

It's why I love planning this kind of trip. Picture a boutique stay among the vineyards, a private tasting at a family-run winery, a river journey past hilltop castles and an evening in a candlelit tavern. In early autumn you might even catch Federweisser, the young, lightly fizzy new wine, traditionally served with onion tart.

Perfect for: Couples, food lovers and families who like a gentle pace.

Autumn in Austria: Mountains, Lakes and Coffee Houses

Red and gold autumn forests surrounding a calm alpine lake in Austria, with mountains rising behind under a soft October sky

In the Tyrol and SalzburgerLand, the forests glow red and gold. Pair a lakeside stay with a few nights in Salzburg or Vienna, and spend cooler afternoons in a traditional coffee house with a slice of cake and nowhere to be.

Imagine landing after a long week and finding a driver already waiting, and a hotel that knows exactly what you like.

Perfect for: Couples, families and food lovers.

Autumn in the Dolomites: Golden Forests and Mountain Spas

Dramatic peaks, golden larches below and a long lunch in a mountain hut after a morning's walk. Then it's back to a spa hotel as the temperature drops.

Some huts close for the season in October, so timing matters here. It's one of the things I'd always check for you.

Perfect for: Couples and active families with older children.

Autumn in Switzerland: Scenic Trains and Slow Travel

Watch the colours change from the window of a scenic train, with the first dusting of snow on the high peaks. Lucerne, Interlaken and the Jungfrau region suit this slower style of travel beautifully.

Some lifts and attractions pause between seasons, so a little careful planning makes a big difference.

Perfect for: Couples and scenic travellers.

Autumn in Norway: Fjords and the Start of Northern Lights Season

Orange and yellow forests, wild fjords and cooler days that make exploring a pleasure. As the nights lengthen, the Northern Lights become a possibility around Tromsø and the Lofoten Islands.

Nothing is ever guaranteed with the lights, but a few nights in the right place gives you the best chance.

Perfect for: Couples and adventurous families.

Why Plan Now?

The best hotels, the right rooms and the most sought-after experiences tend to go first, and autumn is a short, special window. The people who plan ahead get the version of the trip they pictured.

You could book all of this yourself. But knowing which region suits how you like to travel, which hotel feels as good as it looks online and what happens if plans change is what makes a trip feel effortless.

If one of these has made you stop scrolling, get in touch and tell me what you'd love your autumn to feel like.

Sometimes you don't need another week in the sun. Sometimes you just need a mountain, or a vineyard.
