Around the world with a Travel Counsellor

Why First‑Hand Travel Experience Matters More Than Ever In The Age Of AI

Sarah Mott on 14 Sept 2026

In a world where AI can create flawless travel images in seconds, how do you really know what a hotel or resort is like in real life? That is where first‑hand experience still matters. I am about to head off on a bucket‑list research trip to a destination I have booked many times for clients, but never visited myself. I will be walking the beaches, testing the service and seeing if those glossy images truly match reality, so I can keep giving honest, experience‑based recommendations.

We are living in a time where artificial intelligence can create breathtaking images and persuasive words in seconds. Our feeds are filled with glossy hotel shots, idyllic beaches and perfectly styled infinity pools. Very often, it is hard to tell whether you are looking at a genuine photograph taken by someone standing in the resort, or an AI‑generated image that has never actually existed in real life.

In a world like this, I believe that first‑hand, professional experience of destinations, hotels and resorts is more important than it has ever been.

One of the real privileges of my role is being invited to visit different hotels, resorts and locations to experience them in person. It is a huge bonus of the job and something I never take for granted. Behind every trip is a host team that wants us to understand their product, their hospitality and their destination, and I genuinely feel very fortunate to be given those opportunities.

But these trips are not holidays for me. They are an essential part of how I work.

By staying in the resorts myself, walking through the lobbies, trying the restaurants, testing the transfers and noticing the little details, I get to live the experience that my clients will eventually have. I can see:

  • How the rooms really feel in terms of space, light and layout.
  • What the service is like at breakfast on a busy morning.
  • Whether the “quiet” pool actually is quiet.
  • How easy it is to move around the resort with a buggy, a wheelchair or young children in tow.

These are the things that no AI‑generated image or generic review can ever truly capture.

My business is built on trust. Most of the people I work with are referrals or repeat clients. Many start as clients and quickly become friends, because I invest time in getting to know them and understanding what really matters to them when they travel. When I am on a work trip, I am constantly thinking about those individuals:

  • “This pool would be perfect for that family with teenagers.”
  • “That quiet corner suite would really suit my honeymoon couple.”
  • “This resort has the relaxed, barefoot‑luxury vibe that a particular client has been dreaming of.”

So when I recommend somewhere, it is based on real, lived experience rather than AI‑generated reviews or stock images.

That said, as much as I travel, I could never visit every single place on my own bucket list, let alone everywhere my clients ask me about. This is where the power of my wider Travel Counsellors community comes in. I am part of a network of like‑minded travel professionals who are also out exploring the world, staying in resorts and testing experiences first‑hand.

Right now, for example, I have colleagues heading to the Galapagos, Australia, India and beyond. At this time of year, when it is typically a quieter season for many destinations, hotels and tourist boards often invite travel professionals like us to experience their product in depth. They know that if we understand the resort properly, we are far better placed to match it with the right clients and to set realistic expectations.

This gives me access to a huge bank of trusted, first‑hand knowledge that I can tap into. If I have not personally been to a particular resort, there is a very good chance that someone in my community has. I can ask them direct questions, get honest feedback and understand the nuances that never make it into a brochure.

When I travel on these trips, I always go with a clear list of priorities in mind for my clients: accessibility, family‑friendliness, levels of privacy, dining quality, spa facilities, kids’ clubs, sustainability practices and more. I am looking at the resort through their eyes, but I am also taking a broader view so that I understand exactly what is on offer and who it will suit best.

Over the next few days, I will be heading off on my own next research trip. It is somewhere I have never been before, but have sent clients to, and it is very much a bucket list destination for me. I am really excited to finally experience it in person so that I can bring back fresh, honest insight for the people I look after.

If you are curious about where I am going, I am running a little “guess the location” series over on Instagram and Facebook, with a few clues about my journey and the airport I am connecting through. The first post is already live and the next sneak peek will be up in the coming days, followed by more on‑the‑ground content once I arrive.

In a world where AI can create a beautiful picture in seconds, human experience and judgement are what really make the difference. That is what my clients trust me for, and that is exactly what trips like this allow me to keep delivering.
