Honeymoon in Costa Rica: Katie & Kerri’s Wild, Romantic Adventure

Scarlett MacGregor on 14 Feb 2026

Katie and Kerri wanted a honeymoon that felt meaningful, full of wildlife and adventure, but with plenty of comfort and relaxation too. Together we designed a two week journey through Costa Rica that they later described as: “Amazing! Genuinely the best holiday we’ve both ever had.” Here is how their itinerary unfolded.

Day 1: Arrival in San José

After landing in San José, they spent their first night at Parque del Lago Boutique Hotel. This gave them time to recover from the flight, enjoy a comfortable base in the city and get excited for the adventure to come.

Days 2–4: Immersed in the rainforest in Tortuguero

The first real leg of their journey took them deep into Tortuguero National Park, staying at Laguna Lodge Tortuguero.

They described it as

“a beautiful canal and coastal town in the heart of the rainforest, the perfect introduction to this beautiful place”

Boat transfers along the canals, jungle sounds all around and incredible wildlife sightings set the tone for the rest of the trip.

They loved being fully immersed in nature here and highly recommend doing as many guided tours as possible. With expert local guides and telescopes, they were able to spot wildlife they would never have seen alone and even capture amazing photos through the telescope lenses.

Days 4–7: Waterfalls, volcano views and hot springs in La Fortuna

Next stop was La Fortuna, staying at Arenal Springs Hotel. This area is famous for the Arenal Volcano, lush landscapes and hot springs, and it became one of their favourite parts of the trip.

“The 2nd part of our Costa Rica adventure took us to La Fortuna to see waterfalls, wildlife, Arenal Volcano and the beautiful blue waters of Rio Celeste.”

Here they balanced soft adventure and relaxation: hiking to waterfalls, visiting Rio Celeste’s vivid blue waters, soaking in thermal pools and enjoying the hotel’s views of the volcano.

Days 7–9: Cloud forest magic in Santa Elena & Monteverde

From the lowlands, they climbed into the cool mist of the Monteverde Cloud Forest, staying at Koora Hotel in Santa Elena.

“Monteverde Cloud Forest! We hiked the Aguti Trail, saw beautiful butterflies and wildlife. Our night tour was amazing! We had the best zip line adventure! Fun in the pool and met our new favourite animal – coatis! Santa Elena was an amazing little town!”

Highlights here included the Aguti Trail, a thrilling canopy zip line day with Aventura, a memorable night walk and plenty of time to enjoy the hotel pool and Santa Elena’s relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

Days 9–14: Beach time in Potrero

After the cool cloud forest, it was time for some beach relaxation on the Pacific coast. They spent five nights in Potrero at Bahia del Sol, giving them a real chance to slow down, enjoy sunsets, swim and reflect on everything they had experienced so far.

This section of the honeymoon was all about balance: gentle exploration, beach time and enjoying the laid‑back coastal vibe.

Days 14–15: Coffee country charm at Finca Rosa Blanca

For their final night, they stayed at Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Plantation in Santa Bárbara de Heredia. It was a beautiful way to end the trip: surrounded by coffee fields, learning about one of Costa Rica’s most important crops and soaking up the peaceful countryside before flying home.

Service, support and sustainability

Throughout the planning and while they were away, my focus was on making everything feel seamless and personal for them:

“Scarlett was amazing! She was always on hand to answer questions, make suggestions and make changes as we booked. She was also a great support when we were away, helping us with any queries we had during our trip. Scarlett listened to what we wanted and made the fantasy a reality.”

Costa Rica is one of my specialist destinations for sustainable, nature‑focused travel. For Katie and Kerri I used locally owned lodges where possible, trusted local guides and experiences that help protect the extraordinary wildlife they came to see.

Their top tips for anyone planning something similar:

  • Take binoculars for wildlife spotting, they are hard to buy locally
  • Pack for rain, even in dry season
  • Do guided tours in Tortuguero and Monteverde to really maximise sightings
