My Arctic Birthday Adventure
Finnish Lapland Fun (not just kids)
A Proper Winter Birthday in Lapland Returning home from the Arctic Circle in the small hours, ice and snow delaying our flight, felt like the perfect finale to a truly extraordinary journey. Celebrating my December birthday in the depths of Finland—where midwinter temperatures sink to minus fifteen degrees or colder—couldn’t have been further from my Namibian childhood, where thirty-two degrees and sun are the norm. For the first time in my life, I had a white birthday, and what an adventure it was.
More Than Santa: Lapland for Grown-Up Explorers
Lapland is famous as the land of Santa Claus but it offers so much more, especially for adults looking for true winter wonder. When the opportunity arose for an Arctic Snowmobile Adventure, I could not resist. This was not just a holiday, but a plunge into a frosty fairy tale.
Arrival in the Arctic: Total Darkness & Pure Excitement
Touching down at Enontekiö Airport, three o’clock in the afternoon brought pitch-black darkness, a surreal contrast to summer escapes. The cold felt almost electric as we left the warmth of the plane. Children, wide-eyed with excitement for Santa, were ushered onto family coaches, while we joined a smaller group for our more adventurous itinerary, the heavy snow falling as a perfect welcome.
There’s a certain thrill in being issued with thermal suits and oversized snow boots at a tiny Arctic airport. Pro tip: always follow the advice to size up your boots, and do not underestimate the power of foot warmers—they’re game changers in temperatures like these.
Cosy Comfort in Kilpisjärvi
Our home for the trip was Hotel Rakka in Kilpisjärvi, with snug rooms opening directly onto the Arctic tundra. The Scandinavian design, floor-to-ceiling windows, and views over untouched wilderness gave a sense of being utterly immersed in the landscape. Even in darkness, the sense of space and serenity was profound.
Meal times were a feast for the senses: generous buffets featuring reindeer and local specialities in a friendly restaurant. It was the perfect welcome to authentic Lapland cuisine.
Snowmobiles & Three Countries in One Morning
The true adventure began with an early breakfast and the excitement of layering up: thermals, thick overcoats, helmets, and double mittens. After a thorough briefing, we thundered across the frozen expanse of Lake Kilpisjärvi on snowmobiles at up to fifty kilometres per hour. It’s hard to describe the exhilaration of speeding through endless white silence, snow swirling in the Arctic dawn, wind chill biting at minus twenty.
Our goal? The iconic Three Borders Stone, where Finland, Sweden, and Norway meet. Walking around a single monument meant ticking off three countries at once, though trekking through thigh-deep snow made it a true feat.
Rest, Revive, and Snowshoe by Night
Nothing prepares you for how the cold drains your energy. After a delicious lunch and some down time (so vital!), we ventured out again after dark for a snowshoe hike, discovering that these quirky footwear contraptions make deep snow walkable, rather than wading and sinking.
The Magic of the Northern Lights
The highlight and most magical memory? A night under the Aurora Borealis. We’d glimpsed a faint arc earlier in the day, but nothing prepared us for the spectacle to come. The sky erupted in waves of vibrant green, rippling and dancing across the horizon. Our guide marvelled at their brightness and activity, even by local standards, it was a rare, spectacular show.
No photo truly does it justice; the Aurora must be seen to be believed.
Reindeer Encounters and Sámi Traditions
The next day brought new experiences: a visit to a traditional reindeer farm. Feeding these gentle animals and learning from the indigenous Sámi people about their culture was grounding and peaceful, far removed from the festive hustle of “Santa’s helpers.”
Embracing Arctic Adventure: Driving My Own Snowmobile
That evening, I summoned the nerve to drive my own snowmobile. It felt like riding a motorbike over snow—thrilling and surprisingly intuitive. We climbed to higher ground, switched off the engines, and stood beneath another mesmerising Northern Lights display. Before our toes froze (thank heaven for foot warmers), we raced back to our rooms, hearts and spirits full.
Final Reflections: The Privilege of Travel
Looking back, celebrating a birthday beneath the Aurora, surrounded by Arctic silence, was pure privilege. I am so grateful I embraced the cold and said “yes” to this adventure. Lapland is not just about where you go, but what you feel: awe, excitement, and the sheer joy of new experiences.
If you yearn for your own winter fairy tale, be it chasing the Northern Lights, racing across frozen lakes, or sharing magical moments with family, Lapland has experiences to last a lifetime. Winter magic here goes far beyond Christmas, with adventures running late into the season.
