Tuscany, Amalfi & Rome: the ultimate luxury Italy multi-centre itinerary

Sorrel Ashton on 21 Apr 2026

There is a particular kind of traveller who, when asked where they want to go in Italy, says: "All of it." They want the ochre hilltowns and vine-striped valleys of Tuscany. They want to stand in the shadow of the Colosseum and feel the weight of two thousand years of history pressing in. And then they want to sit on a terrace above the Amalfi Coast with a cold glass of Falanghina, watching the fishing boats move far below, and feel absolutely certain there is nowhere on earth more beautiful. The good news is that all of this is entirely possible in a single luxury Italy multi-centre holiday — if it's planned properly. Italy is one of those rare destinations where the variety within a single country is so extraordinary that a tailor-made multi-centre itinerary practically plans itself. The challenge isn't finding enough to do. It's curating the right combination, at the right pace, with the right hotels — so that every stage of the journey feels as good as the last.

Why a multi-centre Italy holiday is worth planning carefully

Italy rewards slow travel. Rush it, and you spend your holiday on trains and in queues. Get the pacing right, and every day feels like a different world — without ever feeling like a tour bus itinerary. That balance between seeing enough and savouring each place is the art of a well-built multi-centre holiday, and it's exactly what a bespoke travel specialist does best.

The classic combination of Rome, Tuscany, and the Amalfi Coast works so beautifully because each region offers something completely different. Rome is ancient, overwhelming, and endlessly alive. Tuscany is pastoral, unhurried, and deeply sensory — the kind of place where a morning truffle hunt followed by a long lunch at the farmhouse table is an entirely normal Tuesday. The Amalfi Coast is something else again: theatrical, glamorous, and visually unlike anywhere else in the world.

Rome

Ancient history, extraordinary food, boutique hotels overlooking the Colosseum — the perfect opening act for any Italy itinerary.

Tuscany

Chianti vineyards, medieval hilltowns, Michelin-starred restaurants in converted farmhouses, and some of Italy's finest luxury villas.

Amalfi Coast

Clifftop villages, private boat days, legendary hotels clinging to the hillside — one of the most dramatic coastlines in the world.

Add-on: the Lakes

For longer itineraries, Lake Como or Lake Garda add a final flourish of elegant northern Italy — grand hotels, mountain scenery, and total serenity.

A sample luxury Italy multi-centre itinerary

Every trip I plan is completely bespoke — designed around your pace, your interests, and what you want to feel at each stage. But here's a sample two-week itinerary that gives you a feel for what a beautifully balanced Italy multi-centre holiday looks like.

Sample 2-week luxury Italy itinerary

Rome — 3 nights

Stay at the Hassler Villa Medici or Portrait Roma. Private early-morning Vatican tour before the crowds arrive, a personal guide at the Colosseum, and dinner in a candlelit courtyard in Trastevere.

Tuscany (Chianti / Val d'Orcia) — 4 nights

Transfer by private car to a luxury villa or converted castle in the Chianti hills. Truffle hunting with a local guide, a private wine tasting at a family-run estate, and a morning in Siena before the day-trippers arrive.

Florence — 2 nights

Stay at the Portrait Firenze or Lungarno Collection. A private dawn visit to the Uffizi, a leather-working class in the Oltrarno, and the best bistecca in the city at a table the guidebooks don't know about.

Amalfi Coast (Ravello or Positano) — 4 nights

Stay at the Caruso in Ravello or Le Sirenuse in Positano. Private boat day around the Amalfi coastline with a stop on Capri, sunset Aperol at a clifftop bar, and a cooking class with a local chef using ingredients from the morning market.

Naples departure — 1 night (optional)

End with a night in Naples — a city that rewards those who look past the surface — before flying home from Naples International.

This itinerary can be extended north to Lake Como or Venice for a longer trip, or trimmed to ten days by focusing on two regions rather than three. Ready to start shaping yours? Fill in my quick enquiry form and I'll put some ideas together for you.

Luxury Italy escape

The best time to visit — and why it matters for each region

Italy's regions have different peak seasons and different crowd dynamics, and getting the timing right is one of the most important parts of building a multi-centre itinerary.

Rome and Tuscany are best in late spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) — warm, golden, and significantly quieter than midsummer. The Amalfi Coast peaks in July and August, which is spectacular but crowded; May, June, and September offer almost identical weather with a fraction of the visitors.

Building an itinerary that takes advantage of shoulder seasons — moving between regions to catch each one at its best — is something a specialist handles as second nature. It's not complicated once you know it, but it's the kind of detail that transforms a good trip into a great one.

What a luxury travel specialist adds to an Italy holiday

Italy is a destination where the difference between a good experience and an exceptional one often comes down to access. The restaurant that requires a booking four months in advance. The private Vatican tour that skips the three-hour queue. The Chianti estate that doesn't appear on any booking site but serves the best lunch of your life. These aren't things you find through a search engine — they come from years of building relationships with the right people on the ground.

"Italy is one of those destinations where knowing the right people makes all the difference. Every trip I plan there comes with introductions I'm proud of."
