Holidays: Why the Lakes and Mountains Are Perfect in Summer
When people think of Austria, they often think of winter and skiing.
And yes, that is a huge part of life here. I have written a separate blog on
skiing if that is what you are looking for. But having lived in Austria for 18
years, I can honestly say that Austria holidays are about so much more than
that!
In fact, my favourite time of year here is not winter at all. It is the lakes
and mountains in spring, summer and early autumn.
A Life in Austria
I have lived in Austria for many years now, spending time in SalzburgerLand and
now in Tyrol, in St Johann to be exact, just a short drive from Kitzbühel.
Living here gives me a real insight into what makes a holiday here work so well.
I have also worked as a tour guide , so I know the regions, the resorts,
and the little details that can make such a difference to a trip. Not just
where to go, but what it actually feels like when you are here.
Why Austria Works So Well for a Summer Holiday
Austria offers something slightly different to the typical summer holiday.
If you are tied to school holidays and want to avoid the intense heat you often
find in places like Turkey or parts of the Mediterranean, the mountains provide
a much more comfortable climate. It can still be warm and sunny, but rarely
overwhelming.
And while there is no coastline, many people are surprised to learn that you
can swim in most of Austria’s lakes. The water is clean, clear, and perfect for
a refreshing swim on a warm day.
It is a completely different kind of summer holiday, but for many, it becomes a
favourite.
Salzburg and Tyrol: A Feel for the Region
The areas I know best are SalzburgerLand and Tyrol, and both offer something
slightly different.
Salzburg gives you that beautiful mix of lakes, mountains and culture. You have
the city itself, full of history and charm, and of course the Sound of Music
connection which so many people still love. It really does feel exactly as you
imagine. It is also the birthplace of Mozart, and that sense of heritage runs
through the city.
From there, you are never far from stunning lakes and picture-perfect villages. Places like Zell am See, Wolfgangsee, and some of the smaller villages around the lakes are perfect for combining beautiful scenery with easy access to activities and day trips.
Tyrol, where I now live, feels more traditionally alpine. It is all about
mountain scenery, fresh air, and a slower pace of life. Places like Kitzbühel and Seefeld are well known, but there are so many smaller, less obvious villages that are
just as special, with a more relaxed and less crowded atmosphere. Places like Ellmau and Alpbach are perfect examples of this.
Each region in Austria has its own character, and choosing the right one really
depends on what kind of holiday you are looking for.
Easy to Reach, Easy to Explore
Austria is surprisingly easy to get to from the UK.
There are direct flights into Salzburg, and Munich is also a very convenient
option. From there, onward travel is very scenic, and with the right planning, getting to your resort is straightforward.
For some clients, driving is also a great alternative, particularly if you
prefer to have your own car and take things at your own pace.
Something for Everyone
One of the things I love most about Austria is how versatile it is.
It is not just for couples or keen walkers. I am here with my family, and there is so much to do for children. Farms, petting zoos,
cable cars, gentle walks, lakeside activities. It is all very accessible and very
relaxed.
What I love most is how easy it is to spend real time together here, whether
that is walking, swimming in the lakes, or simply being outdoors without the
rush.
Cycling and e-biking are also a fantastic way to explore this part of Austria,
and a friend of mine Lindsey Cairns from ebike Europe, shares some beautiful routes and experiences across
Austria and wider Europe here:

Accommodation in Austria is just as varied. From traditional alpine huts and
family-run guesthouses to kinderhotels and high-end luxury hotels, there really
is something for everyone.
Safe, Welcoming, and Easy
Austria is also incredibly safe.
It is one of those places where life feels calm and easy, and that comes across
very quickly when you are on holiday here. It is clean, well organised, and
everything just works.
That in itself can make a big difference to how a holiday feels.
Another part of what makes Austria so special is the culture and the everyday experiences. Whether it is sitting by a lake with a coffee and a slice of Sachertorte, enjoying traditional Austrian dishes in a mountain hut, or trying a local beer like Stiegl in Salzburg, those little moments are often what people remember most.
Living here, you also get to experience the traditions properly.
In St Johann, where I am based, we have the Knödelfest each September, with Europe’s longest dumpling table and a real celebration of local food.
You will also see people wearing traditional dress, Lederhosen and Dirndl, not just for visitors but as part of everyday celebrations and festivals.
Throughout the year, there are also local festivals, music, and seasonal events that make each visit feel a little different.

The Little Details Matter
For me, planning a trip to Austria is not just about choosing a destination.
It is about knowing which resort will suit you best, what time of year works,
how to get around, and what little touches will make your trip feel special.
That is where my experience really comes in.
Thinking About Austria?
If Austria is somewhere you have been considering, or even if it has not been
on your radar before, I would be very happy to talk it through with you.
It is one of those destinations that often surprises people, in the best
possible way.
