Scenic Ruby on the Rhine and Moselle, a river cruise I would do again in a heartbeat!
A first time river cruiser’s take on Scenic Ruby, sailing the Rhine and Moselle with changing plans, unforgettable bike rides, the Lorelei legend and a surprise love of German wine.
This summer I swapped my usual big ocean ships for something completely different, a Scenic river cruise along the Rhine and Moselle on board Scenic Ruby. From low water levels changing our plans at the last minute to cycling through the Rhine Valley, gliding past the Lorelei Rock with its haunting song playing on deck and discovering that I actually love German wine, this trip surprised me in all the best ways.
Before I even stepped on board Scenic Ruby, this trip reminded me that travel does not always go exactly to plan. Due to unusually low water levels on parts of the Rhine and Moselle, our itinerary had to be adjusted and, instead of boarding in Frankfurt as planned, we started in Koblenz. Scenic met us at the airport, helped with our luggage and transferred us on a comfortable coach to Koblenz where the ship was waiting, all handled calmly and without fuss.
As a seasoned ocean cruiser, I was also curious how the rhythm of each day would feel on a river cruise. On big ocean ships you tend to sail overnight and wake somewhere new. Here I quickly learned that the pattern is different and that is part of the charm. Some days we sailed in the morning and explored in the afternoon, on others we headed out on excursions first and then enjoyed lazy sailing later in the day, watching the scenery slip by with a drink in hand.
Rhine highlights
Lorelei Legend....
The Rhine section is all about castles, pretty towns and life along the river. One of my favourite stretches was the Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO listed section dotted with hilltop fortresses and steep vineyards. As we passed Lorelei Rock, we heard one of the river’s most famous legends, of a beautiful maiden sitting high on the cliff, combing her golden hair and singing so enchantingly that passing sailors forget to watch the dangerous currents below and are drawn onto the rocks. On board they played the traditional Lorelei song as we sailed by, and that haunting melody, mixed with the views from deck, is something that will stay in my head for a long time.
Cycling excursion in the rhine Valley....
We also joined a guided e-bike tour through the Rhine Valley, cycling along the river with local guides who shared stories about the villages, the vineyards and everyday life there. Pedalling on our electric bikes past half timbered houses and church spires, with the ship occasionally coming into view beside us, is an experience that will always stay with me and gave a completely different perspective on the scenery.
Moselle moments and German wine
If the Rhine feels grand and dramatic, the Moselle is softer and more intimate. The river winds between steep hillsides covered in vines, with small towns and villages tucked into the bends. I loved sitting out on deck as we drifted past row after row of vineyards and then stepping ashore to wander narrow lanes and climb to viewpoints looking back over the river.
German Wine tasting....
I have never really thought of myself as a fan of German wines, but the selection on board surprised me in the best way. Tasting crisp local Rieslings and other regional wines while actually sailing past the vineyards they came from was a real highlight, and I left feeling like a complete convert.
Life on board Scenic Ruby
Scenic Ruby itself felt like a relaxed, friendly boutique hotel on the water. Our cabin was comfortable and thoughtfully laid out, with large windows and a balcony so we could enjoy the view even when getting ready or enjoying a quiet cuppa.
Each dining experience genuinely felt five star, from unhurried breakfasts to beautifully presented dinners that reflected where we were sailing. The quality of the food and service was consistently excellent without ever feeling stuffy or formal. What stood out most were the people. The crew quickly learned our preferences and were always ready with a recommendation, a top up or simply a chat, which made the ship feel warm and welcoming.
Who this might suit
From my own experience, this itinerary would really suit couples who want time together without too much rushing about, friends or adult families who enjoy excellent food, wine and gentle sightseeing, and solo travellers who like the idea of a smaller, sociable ship with organised tours included. Sailing on 1 July meant warm, comfortable weather, long evenings and a relaxed holiday atmosphere in each place we visited.
Looking back
For me, this Scenic Rhine and Moselle cruise on Scenic Ruby was a chance to slow down, see familiar parts of Europe in a new way and try a different style of cruising. From the way the low water disruption was handled, to that unforgettable bike ride through the Rhine Valley, the Lorelei legend and song, the five star dining and the discovery that I actually enjoy German wines, it is a trip that will stay with me for a long time.
