Oceania Allura – A Refined Journey from Istanbul
Having recently returned from my first ever Oceania cruise I wanted to share a series of blogs. Sailing from Istanbul to Athens on Oceania Allura, and it confirmed exactly what I’d hoped: Oceania is very much a luxury brand. Elegant, stylish and beautifully run, but with a warm, welcoming atmosphere rather than anything stuffy.
For this cruise we flew into Istanbul the day before embarkation, and I will always recommend this to my clients now. Having a relaxed evening to see a little of the city, a proper night’s sleep instead of a stressful travel‑day dash, and a calm, unhurried morning to get to the port made such a difference. We boarded feeling excited and ready to enjoy the ship – not frazzled from planes, transfers and queues – and it changed the whole feel of that first day.
Meeting Oceania Allura
Allura is the newest ship in the Oceania Cruises fleet, launched in 2025. She carries around 1,200 guests with roughly 800 crew, so the service feels very personal: more like a boutique hotel at sea than a floating resort. At about 67,000 gross tonnes she is big enough to offer a good choice of bars, lounges and dining venues, yet small enough that you quickly start recognising familiar faces among both guests and crew. You never have that “lost in a shopping mall” feeling you can sometimes get on the mega‑ships.
Stepping on board: champagne, calm & a Lalique welcome
From the moment we stepped onto Allura, it felt special. As you walk on, you enter the central foyer and the first thing that really catches your eye is the stunning Lalique staircase: elegant, sculptural and sparkling under the lights. It sets the tone straight away for the level of detail and design on this ship.
Then came the champagne. We were welcomed with a glass as we stepped on, which instantly made it feel like a celebration. The crew were warm and polished, and somehow managed to make us feel like returning guests even though it was our very first time with Oceania.
All the documentation and check‑in had been handled online before we travelled, with helpful reminders in the run‑up to departure, so embarkation day itself was incredibly smooth: drop the bags, a very quick check‑in, and then straight on board to admire that Lalique staircase and slip into holiday mode.
Luxury, but never intimidating
What I really liked about Allura is that she hit a lovely sweet spot for me. She is very much a smaller, luxury ship, so she feels intimate and easy to navigate, with elegant interiors and excellent service – but the atmosphere is still relaxed and welcoming.
In the evenings the dress code is smart casual: gents are expected to wear trousers in the restaurants, and beachwear or flip flops aren’t appropriate in the evening venues. It feels refined and grown up, but never intimidating. You still dress for dinner, but it is about feeling good rather than trying to impress a dress‑code inspector.
Our route: Turkey, Greece and tender moments
Our itinerary combined Turkey and Greece, starting in Istanbul and ending in Athens, with a really nice mix of well‑known and slightly lesser‑known stops: Bozcaada for the site of Troy, Izmir for the ancient city of Ephesus, Nafplio in the Peloponnese, Chania on Crete, Santorini, and finally Athens.
The Aegean gave us some lively swell in places, but the Captain and team managed it superbly. We still tendered into Nafplio, which sits in a sheltered bay so the tenders could run safely and we could enjoy this very pretty town. We docked in Chania on Crete, which meant a smooth arrival straight to the pier and a lovely, easy day exploring the harbourfront. We also tendered ashore in Santorini, for those classic caldera views and white‑washed villages that never really stop being impressive.
What struck me most was how calmly and professionally everything was handled. When sea conditions affected the original plan, the Captain adjusted timings and the onboard programme so that we still enjoyed interesting ports, a full day‑to‑day programme on board, and never felt as though we had “lost” days.
