Skiing in Avoriaz: Our Family Trip

Vicky Ingham on 14 Feb 2026

Fresh from a snowy family ski adventure in Avoriaz, I’m sharing what made this car‑free, ski‑in/ski‑out resort such a brilliant choice for nervous second‑time skiers and fun‑loving teens alike.

I’m just back home from a brilliant family ski trip to Avoriaz, and my legs are still reminding me about it! This was only my second time on skis and, although my family like to tell me I’m “too slow”, I’m actually really proud of myself for getting out there again. I completely understand now why people get addicted to skiing – there is something so special about being up in the mountains, learning a new skill, and sharing that experience together as a family.

This time the weather gave us a very different kind of holiday. We had extremely snowy conditions: pretty much non-stop snow and, at times, not the best visibility. It was the complete opposite of our last ski holiday, which was all about blue skies and sunshine. But do you know what? I still absolutely loved it. There was something magical about watching the snow fall all day, then stepping out each morning into fresh powder.

Avoriaz Highlights

Totally car‑free & ski‑in/ski‑out: From the moment you arrive, you really feel like you’re in a true mountain village. There are no cars in the resort, which instantly makes it feel safer and more relaxed, especially with children and teens. Being genuinely ski‑in/ski‑out meant we could click into our skis right from the door and head straight onto the slopes. No buses, no lugging equipment around, just more time actually skiing (or in my case, concentrating very hard and trying not to fall over!).

Slopes for every level: With a huge interconnected ski area and a really good mix of runs, we found there was something for everyone. As a relative beginner, I had plenty of gentle slopes to build my confidence, while the more experienced skiers in the family could go off and explore more challenging runs. It made it easy for us to split up and then meet back together without anyone feeling held back.

Horse‑drawn sleighs: One of the real “wow” moments for me was seeing the horse‑drawn sleighs gliding through the resort. They add such a charming, almost storybook feel, especially in the evenings when the snow is falling and the lights are twinkling. It is a lovely touch that makes Avoriaz feel extra special.

Teen‑Approved Après & Foodie Favourites

Travelling with teenagers means après-ski is very much part of the brief, and Avoriaz did not disappoint.

Après at La Folie Douce Avoriaz: This was a big hit with my teens. The atmosphere is fun and lively, with music and a real buzz at the end of the ski day. It felt like a great place to soak up the energy of the resort and enjoy that “we’ve earned this” feeling after a day on the slopes.

Favourite places to eat: We had some lovely meals out.

La Cabane became a firm favourite, with cosy mountain vibes and hearty dishes that taste even better when you come in from the cold.

Le Chapka was another hit, perfect for refuelling and warming up with good food and a friendly atmosphere.

Top takeaway: Mountain Pizz’Burg: For those evenings when we wanted something easy and relaxed, Mountain Pizz’Burg was our go‑to. Sometimes all you need after a full day skiing is pizza or a burger, comfy clothes, and an early night.

Accommodation Thoughts: Why I Loved L’Amara

On this trip we rented a private apartment, which worked well for us. However, we also took the chance to visit L’Amara, and if I were choosing a top accommodation option in Avoriaz for my clients, this would be at the top of my list.L’Amara offers exactly the kind of on‑site facilities that make a family ski holiday smoother and more indulgent:

  • Pool and spa area for a relaxing dip or some downtime off the slopes
  • Bar and restaurant on site, ideal for low‑effort evenings
  • Ski hire shop right there, which makes sorting out equipment so much easier on arrival

It has that blend of convenience and comfort that really elevates the whole experience, particularly for families who want everything close at hand.

Avoriaz really impressed me as an all‑round ski resort, especially for families. The car‑free village, genuine ski‑in/ski‑out access, varied slopes, fun après scene, and great dining options all came together to create a holiday that felt both exciting and effortless. Even with the heavy snow and low visibility at times, I came home feeling more confident on my skis and already thinking about where to go next. And for me, that is the sign of a truly successful ski trip.

If you are thinking about a family ski holiday and would like to know whether Avoriaz might be right for you, I would love to share more about my experience and help you find the perfect set‑up for your own trip.Avoriaz SkiAvoriazAvoriazAvoriazAvoriaz Ski
