River Cruising

River Cruising - why is it such a special way to travel?

Fiona Dinnis on 04 Apr 2026

When most people think about a cruise, they imagine big ships and open seas. River cruising is something quite different, and I think, rather magical! Instead of days at sea, you glide gently along waterways that have shaped civilisations for centuries. There is almost always something to see, from vine-covered hillsides, castles perched on cliffs and tiny villages to bustling riverfronts. It feels as if the landscape is slowly unfolding just for you.

Instead of days at sea, you glide gently along waterways that have shaped civilisations for centuries. There is almost always something to see, from vine-covered hillsides, castles perched on cliffs and tiny villages to bustling riverfronts. It feels as if the landscape is slowly unfolding just for you

One of the biggest joys of river cruising is how effortless it is. You unpack once, settle into your cabin and then wake up in a new town, city or even country almost every day. There are no long airport queues or stressful transfers between destinations. River ships tend to dock very close to the centre of places like Budapest, Vienna, Porto or Paris, so you simply step off the ship and you are right where you want to be, ready to explore.

Life on board is wonderfully relaxed. With far fewer guests than on an ocean ship, river cruises have a warm, friendly and unintimidating atmosphere. The crew quickly get to know you, from how you like your morning coffee to your favourite pre-dinner drink. Many people tell me it feels more like staying in a stylish, intimate hotel than being on a traditional cruise. If you prefer good food, fascinating destinations and genuine connections over big shows and noisy nightlife, river cruising can be a perfect fit.

Because the rivers wind through some of the world’s most beautiful and culturally rich regions, you are never far from something interesting. Think lazy afternoons on deck drifting past vineyards on the Rhine or Douro, or evenings spent sailing into cities that sparkle with lights. Days ashore might include guided walking tours, wine tastings, market visits or simply wandering cobbled streets at your own pace. You can be as active or as relaxed as you like, knowing your floating hotel is always close by.

My own passion for river cruising runs deep. I am currently on CLIA’s River Cruise Champion programme, which is dedicated to in-depth training and ongoing updates on all things river cruise. On top of that, I have been on more than 20 river cruise ships, experiencing different lines, layouts and styles first-hand. That experience means I can talk to you honestly about what the ships are really like, how the cabins feel in terms of space and light, the general atmosphere on board and what you can expect in terms of service and dining.

This specialist knowledge is especially valuable, because from the outside, many river itineraries can look very similar. The differerences lie in the details.  How inclusive is the price?  What is the pace of the excursions?  Is there a particular decor style? What is the typical age range on board?  Is the atmosphere very relaxed or a little more formal? etc. Having spent time exploring so many ships, I can help you cut through the marketing and find the river, ship and itinerary that truly suit you and the way you like to travel.

When we plan your river cruise together, I start with you. I will ask about the sort of places that appeal to you, whether you prefer a slower or more active pace, any mobility considerations, the level of inclusivity you would like and the kind of onboard atmosphere you enjoy. From there, I can recommend specific rivers, cruise lines, routes and cabin types that match your priorities, rather than a generic “off-the-shelf” option. I can also help you decide on the best time of year to travel and suggest pre or post cruise stays to make the most of your journey.

If river cruising is new to you, I know it can be hard to picture what each day actually feels like. That is where my experience really comes into its own. I can talk you through a typical day on board and ashore, explain how things like dining, excursions and dress codes work in practice, and give you a clear, realistic idea of what to expect. My aim is always to remove any uncertainty, so you can look forward to your holiday with excitement rather than questions.

If you are curious about river cruising, or wondering whether it might be right for you, I would love to chat.
