Leaving the lights of Funchal

A day in Funchal

that reminded me exactly why cruising is such a brilliant way to taste a destination

We had planned to head up to the Tropical Gardens and see the famous toboggan run, but when the cable car wasn’t running, Madeira had other ideas for us… and honestly, I’m glad it did.

We left Funchal city behind and headed into the mountains, reaching one of the island’s highest viewpoints at Pico dos Barcelona — dramatic views, fresh air, and that wow-factor you just don’t get from staying in port.

From there it was down to the coast for a long, lazy lunch by the sea in Câmara de Lobos, a colourful fishing village full of character (and excellent food).

We finished the day back in Funchal with a cheese and Madeira wine pairing at Blandy’s, the perfect introduction to one of the island’s most famous exports.

What I loved most was how much we managed to fit into one day — capital city highlights and a coastal village — all while being back onboard P&O Azura in time for sail away.

Cruising really does give you the best first taste of a destination… and Madeira has definitely earned a return visit!
