Spotlight on: La Residence, Franschhoek

There are few places in South Africa that achieve what La Residence does so quietly and so well. Set on a private 30-acre estate in the heart of the Franschhoek Valley - ringed by mountains, vineyards, and plum orchards - it accommodates a maximum of 22 guests across 11 individually designed suites. Part of The Royal Portfolio and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, it feels far more like a grand private home than a hotel, with drinks, breakfast, and a complimentary shuttle into Franschhoek village all included from the outset. From the moment you arrive, there is very little left to arrange.

A property with a point of view

La Residence is shaped by a strong aesthetic hand. Owner Liz Biden's maximalist style runs through every space – think bold colour, layered textures, glittering chandeliers, handpicked antiques, and imported hand-embroidered silks sitting alongside local tapestries and vintage pieces gathered from decades of travel. Each of the 11 suites carries its own distinct colour scheme and character, and the public spaces are just as considered. The Loggia overlooks the dam at sunset, the Sitting Room has a roaring fireplace and a well-stocked library, and the Persian Alley runs along a stream between lawns and flower beds. It's a property with real theatre, but the scale remains intimate enough that none of it ever feels overwhelming.

Suite and villas to suit your group

The main hotel's 11 suites - six Luxury and five Superior - are reserved for guests aged ten and over, which keeps the atmosphere notably calm. For families, the Vineyard Suites are the better choice. Set among the vines, they come in one-, two-, and three-bedroom configurations, each with a private garden and pool, and access to the Terrace Room's communal dining and bar. Children of all ages are welcome. For complete privacy, Franschhoek House is the standout option. This six-bedroom exclusive-use villa accommodates up to 12 guests and comes with a dedicated private chef, concierge host, house beverages, a heated pool, verandas, a games room, and an interactive kitchen making it ideal for multi-generational families, milestone celebrations, or groups who want the estate entirely to themselves.

From the cellar to the Chef's Table

The kitchen at La Residence works to a farm-to-table philosophy, drawing on the estate's own produce and the best of what the Franschhoek Valley consistently delivers. Chef Cheslin and his team build ever-changing seasonal menus, paired with a sommelier-curated wine list. A typical evening begins with aperitifs in The Loggia before moving through to the main dining hall – passing chandeliers, Victorian tiles, and open fireplaces - or outdoors along The Persian Alley for al fresco summer meals. For something more intimate, The Cellar Door Experience offers a five-course private dinner in the estate's candlelit below-ground wine cellar, available for four to ten guests. The Chef's Table takes a different approach: six courses built around the diverse flavours and cultures of South Africa, each paired with estate wines. Franschhoek House guests have their own private chef on hand for every meal.

Into the valley and beyond

Franschhoek is one of South Africa's most rewarding small towns, and La Residence puts you well placed to explore it. Private wine tastings can be arranged on the estate, or you can head out to the surrounding farms independently. The grounds themselves reward a slower morning - cycling or strolling past olive trees, roses, and vines is the perfect way to start your day. Those wanting more can hike the trails surrounding the estate, arrange a horse ride through the vineyards and mountains, or spend a couple of hours at the Franschhoek Motor Museum, a genuine draw for those who appreciate fine machinery. The hotel's concierge team runs guided full- and half-day tours to Cape Town, the Cape Peninsula, and Hermanus, too and your Travel Counsellor can arrange helicopter flights over the winelands, private transfers, and restaurant reservations during your stay.

Your handcrafted stay starts here

La Residence combines naturally with a few days in Cape Town beforehand, or pairs well as part of a wider South African itinerary that takes in a safari at Royal Malewane, its sister property in The Royal Portfolio.
