For six nights, Kruger sets the pace. Start at Tshokwane River Camp, where canvas tents sit in a dry riverbed setting, then travel through the park to Kruger Shalati, the train permanently stationed above the Sabie River. Daily game drives are included at both stays. In Johannesburg, the focus shifts to Sanctuary Mandela, the former home where Nelson Mandela lived during the country’s transition to democracy.
Days 1-3: Tshokwane River Camp
Fly to Skukuza and transfer to Tshokwane River Camp. Canvas tents sit within the dry riverbed landscape of Kruger National Park. Over three nights, daily drives take you out with a guide in the cooler morning hours and again later in the day. Watch the bush from the vehicle as the light changes and animals move between shade, water and open ground.
Days 4-6: Kruger Shalati
Travel through the park to Kruger Shalati – The Train on the Bridge & Garden Suites. The train stands on the historic Selati Bridge above the Sabie River, at the place where early visitors once stopped overnight by rail. From the bridge, look towards the riverbanks where birds and wildlife come to drink. Stay three nights and continue exploring Kruger on daily game drives.
Days 7-8: Johannesburg
Fly to Johannesburg and transfer to Sanctuary Mandela in Houghton. The hotel occupies the former home where Mandela lived from 1992 to 1998, during the transition to democracy and the early years of his presidency. A guided tuk-tuk tour takes you into Soweto, where the streets and neighbourhoods offer a different perspective on the country’s recent history.
