Trip highlights

  • Cross Chele La, one of Bhutan’s highest mountain passes, on the way to Haa, a quiet valley in the country’s west.

  • Walk forest and village trails to Jamte Goenpa, a historic Buddhist monastery, and visit Haa’s White and Black Temples.

  • Discover Bhutan’s traditional crafts in Thimphu, the country’s compact capital, with a painting workshop and a visit to a handmade paper factory.

  • Explore Phobjikha, a broad glacial valley and a winter refuge for black-necked cranes, on foot and by bicycle.

  • Visit Tiger’s Nest, Bhutan’s famous cliffside monastery, and experience farm life in Paro Valley.

Discover the Kingdom of Bhutan on a 13-day journey through quiet Himalayan valleys, the capital city Thimphu and the historic landmarks of Paro. Travel between regions overland rather than via domestic flight, taking in the changing mountain scenery along the way, with at least two nights in each base.
Along your journey, visit local craft and conservation organisations, walk village and forest trails, and browse community markets. From Haa Valley, a remote district in western Bhutan, to the open meadows of Phobjikha and the farmsteads of Paro, this trip brings together nature, culture, and time to get to know each place.

Day 1: Paro and Haa Valley

Welcome to Bhutan, known locally as Druk Yul, the Land of the Thunder Dragon. After arriving in Paro, meet your local representative and receive a traditional tashi khaddar white scarf, offered as an auspicious welcome. Then travel by road over Chele La, one of Bhutan’s highest mountain passes.

Settle in at Risum Resort, a family-owned retreat with views across Haa Valley, whose founders established the Haa Valley Cooperative to create opportunities for young people.

Day 2: Haa Valley

Walk from Lechuna village towards Jamte Goenpa, a 300-year-old monastery set where the forest trail opens up. From here, the southern Haa Valley spreads out below, framed by green mountain slopes. Visit a local home for a chance to meet residents and hear about daily life in this quieter corner of Bhutan.

Later, visit Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Nagpo—the White and Black Temples at the valley’s southern entrance. After the walk, unwind in a hot stone bath: warm water scented with herbs and heated by river stones in a wooden tub, a traditionally Bhutanese way to relax.

Day 3: Haa Valley to Thimphu

Travel through the countryside to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. Visit the Buddha Dordenma above the city, whose gilded bronze surface catches the sun, and Tashichho Dzong, a fortress-monastery with whitewashed walls and red ochre roofs.

Browse Ka Ja Throm, the city’s market quarter. Displays of farm produce and handicrafts sit alongside local food, while the bustle offers a glimpse of everyday Thimphu. Stay at Khang Residency, a locally owned boutique hotel with a local team and food sourced from nearby farms.

Day 4: Thimphu

Visit Choki Traditional Art School, a visitor-focused centre created to preserve and share Bhutan’s 13 traditional crafts. Learn about its work, enjoy a mint tea, and hone your skills in a painting workshop.

After lunch, visit RSPN Bhutan, a conservation organisation, to hear about its environmental and community programmes. Continue to Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory to see how traditional paper is made and try the process yourself. At the local craft bazaar, look out for woven textiles, embroidery, and bamboo crafts.

Day 5: Thimphu to Gangtey

Visit the National Memorial Chorten, a prominent Buddhist shrine, before setting off for Gangtey. At Dochula Pass, observe the ridge, with prayer flags in blue, white, red, green and yellow against the mountain sky.

Continue to Phobjikha Valley, a broad glacial valley of meadows and surrounding hills. In the evening, visit Gangtey Goenpa - the only Nyingmapa monastery this side of the Black Mountains, and the largest of its kind in Bhutan. You’ll stay at Phuentsho Yangkhil Lodge, which supports awareness of black-necked crane conservation.

Day 6: Gangtey

Attend an early morning prayer ceremony at Gangtey Shedra, a Buddhist monastic school. The quiet setting and rhythm of the ceremony offer a moment to pause and observe an important part of the valley’s spiritual life.

Walk the Gangtey Nature Trail through meadows, forest and villages, then cycle in the valley. At the Black Neck Crane Information Centre, use high-powered telescopes to scan the wetlands and learn about the cranes and their habitat.

Day 7: Gangtey

Travel to Longtey village for a hike through bamboo and rhododendron forest. The trail climbs to a pass with a view of Gangtey Goenpa perched above the valley and forested hills rising beyond. It’s a chance to see the landscape you’ve been exploring from a different vantage point.

Descend towards Kumbu village, where your transport will meet you. Later, enjoy more time to cycle in the valley before returning to Phuentsho Yangkhil Lodge.

Day 8: Gangtey to Wangdue Phodrang

Travel from Phobjikha’s high, open meadows towards the warmer river valleys and terraced farmland of central Bhutan. Stop in Punakha to visit Chimi Lhakhang, a hilltop Buddhist temple, then explore the nearby village and local shops.

Continue to Rinchengang, where traditional mud houses cluster above the fields. A local story links the village’s early settlers with skilled stone masons who helped build Wangdue Dzong, adding another layer to the visit beyond the scenery. Stay at Wangdue Eco Lodge, whose traditional Bhutanese cottages have private balconies overlooking the countryside, river and mountains.

Day 9: Punakha

Visit Punakha Dzong, also known as the Palace of Great Happiness. Set at the meeting point of two rivers, its whitewashed walls and carved woodwork make it a striking landmark.

Cross the Punakha Suspension Bridge, then raft on the river. Afterwards, enjoy a picnic lunch with views of the fortress and river, before walking to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, a hilltop Buddhist shrine overlooking the surrounding valley.

Day 10: Wangdue Phodrang to Paro

Travel by road to Paro, a valley of temples, traditional farmsteads, and terraced fields. Check in at The Happiness Farm, where dining draws on ingredients from its own fields and gardens. Choose from activities such as a farm tour, a cooking class, a cultural performance, or tree planting.

Day 11: Paro

Set out for Taktshang Monastery, better known as Tiger’s Nest, a sacred monastery clinging to a cliff about 900 metres above Paro Valley. The hike is a substantial climb, but the sight of the monastery against the rock face make this one of Bhutan’s most memorable walks.

On the way back, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, then explore Paro town and its market stalls selling seasonal fruit.

Day 12: Paro

Visit Ta Dzong, home to the National Museum, or walk to Rinpung Dzong, a fortress-monastery known for its courtyards and Buddhist paintings.

At a traditional farmhouse, try Bhutanese archery and khuru, a local dart game. In the evening at The Happiness Farm, enjoy dinner in Bhutanese national dress: the men’s gho, a knee-length robe tied at the waist, or the women’s kira, an ankle-length wrap dress worn with a blouse and fastened with a brooch.

Day 13: Paro

As your journey comes to a close, travel to Paro Airport with memories of mountain passes and open valleys, village encounters, craft traditions, the prayer ceremony and the unforgettable setting of Tiger’s Nest.
