It's Nice To Meet You

Thanks for stopping by. I'm Jane, an independent personal travel consultant based in the market town of Brampton in north Cumbria, a short distance from Scotland, Northumberland, and the beautiful Lake District. I’ve lived here for 11 years with my husband Peter.

30 +years as a travel professional in various sectors of the industry has given me the ideal background and experience to set up my own business as a personal travel concierge. I'm backed by the global success story that is Travel Counsellors. I save my clients time, I may save them money, but what I will give them is exactly what they want. I offer a personal, but professional bespoke service at a time to suit. I'm a memory maker; I do the work, and my clients get to make those special memories. I'm happy to work on personal and business travel arrangements.

I don't have a sales background, I've never worked in a high street travel agent, but what I do have is passion and enthusiasm. Clients come back to me when they realise that I really care about their holidays, and I will do everything within my power to ensure they have the best time ever.

Winter sports holidays, adventure and activity travel, luxury longhaul travel, cruising, family holidays, safari, city breaks, UK staycations. If travel matters to you, let me sort it for you.

If you want someone to take all the stress from travel planning, and having someone to turn to when things go wrong, someone to give advice re the constantly changing entry and test requirements, then I'd be delighted to help.

Travelling post Covid

14 September 2020

I recently returned from Corfu. It had to be done. I just wanted to get back on a plane again and feedback to anyone who is interested what the whole experience is like. Selfishly I also needed some downtime to recharge my batteries. Three days of warm temperatures, cloudless skies, and time spent on the beautiful island of Corfu where every view is just stunning. I even made it up to see the sunrise on my final morning. I was apprehensive about going, but as soon as I landed in Corfu airport, and stepped out into the warmth of the evening, I knew I had done the right thing. For me, there's nothing like the sensation of arriving somewhere new; the smells, sounds of the cicadas, the heat and fabulous sunsets and sunrises over the sea. That's why I work in travel - sadly I haven't added to my tally of countries visited, I've been to Greece before, but it was a new island for me. Earlier in the week I had completed my online Passenger Locator Form for entry into Greece. You are then emailed a QR code the evening before travel which you can have either on your device, or print as a Pdf. I flew from Newcastle with Easyjet. I've never seen an airport so quiet. Car parks, check in area, and once through into departures, hardly any one around. You have to wait until departures to get refreshments, but a lot of the shops are closed. Duty free is open. Going through security was a doddle. Masks are worn by everyone at all times except when having food and drink. Plenty of hand sanitizer stations everywhere, and social distancing observed. Wearing a mask on the flight was not as bad as I thought, and the 3.5 hr flight to Corfu passed quickly. Easyjet provided a limited food and drink service if you wanted. The arrival at Corfu airport went really smoothly, our Passenger Locator Forms were checked, and it took moments for the luggage to arrive. I collected my hire car, took a couple of wrong turns, but got to my hotel within 40 minutes. I stayed in a very nice 3* superior hotel in Ypsos, which had a beautiful outdoor pool area surrounded by gardens and a spectacular view over the sea. I also visited some of the island’s best 5* hotels, Domes Miramare, MarBella Corfu hotel and the Kontokali Bay Resort & Spa. All hotels have various Covid protocols in place, some take your temperature on arrival, and depending on where you stay, breakfast may be brought to your table, or if it is a buffet, it may be table service. Tables need to be booked in advance if you are having meals in your hotel. Some activities are limited, but in the main, once you're by the pool, or on the beach, things are normal. All staff wear visors or facemasks, and you're asked to wear yours in corridors, lifts and anywhere else where you might be in close proximity to others. I spent one day exploring, I took my small Citroen C1 (no power going up hills) along a beautiful coastal route north to the harbour village of Kassiopi. Such stunning views everywhere – I bought some fruit from an elderly Corfiot who was just trying to make a living. It felt wonderfully normal. It was lovely just to sit in a taverna in the evening and watch the world go by. I also had some downtime.

Let's go cruising

03 September 2019

Earlier in August I attended a day in Newcastle which was all about cruising, and I thought I would share my learnings with you. In a former life I was involved in the management of river cruising holidays, but I was happy to find out more about ocean cruising and the different types of cruise available to my clients. Whether you are an experienced cruiser or a cruise novice, there is something for everyone out there. Here are some instant positives – you only unpack once, eat great food, whilst seeing lots of different places! It offers great value for money, there is a type of cruise to suit every budget, and you can book up to 2 years in advance, 3 in some cases. If you want to do a round the world cruise for 161 days for approx. £45000, you can do that. If you want a 2 day taster cruise, that’s out there too. There are usually offers on, whether it be for a cabin upgrade, or early booking offers, inclusive drinks packages, or gratuities. It can be a bit bewildering trying to decide where to go, which type of cruise, which cruise line. This is where I come in. I have access to just about every itinerary, cruise line, and ship available, whether that’s river or ocean. If you don’t like flying, then consider a no-fly cruise from one of the UK ports. It’s just been announced this week that eco-friendly Hurtigruten will be offering expedition cruising from Dover for their 15 day round trip Northern Lights & Fjords departures in the winter of 2021/22 – there’s a 20% discount on this if booked by end October 2019! There are cruise lines which are more suitable for families, with things like climbing walls to keep the kids entertained. If you want to see action on a Tall Ship, no problem, I can arrange that for you. If you want to experience ultra luxury with your own private butler, I know which to recommend. Expedition cruising – I’ve got that covered. Travelling on your own, I can find a suitable ship for you too. One tip – if you get seasick, then stick to river cruising. If you want to fly to pick up a cruise in Dubai, but have a few nights there first, I can arrange that as well. It’s so important to find the right cruise for you – everyone is individual and all clients have different requirements. Here are some interesting trends, so depending on your age bracket, this is where you might want to go: 60+ China, Japan and South America 50+ expedition cruises, Galapagos, Polar expedition cruising 40+ Northern Europe and the Caribbean We’re seeing some other cruise trends emerging this year – such as travelling solo, travelling in the quieter colder months (it’s cheaper too), more people are working whilst travelling, travellers are more eco friendly, cruise ships have smarter technology, and clients consider wellness, food and relaxation a huge part of their cruise experience. Cruising holidays are so popular, and it’s a perfect holiday for multi-generations. If you haven’t tried one before, or you’re about to book your 25th cruise, please get in touch, and I’ll help you find your perfect cruise.

Biking & Blue Men in Boston

03 May 2019

When I was offered a place on the Boston & Cape Cod incentive trip before Christmas, little did I know that part of it would be on a bike around Boston! Fast forward to April, and I was being kitted out with bike and helmet along with some of my TC colleagues. I have to say I approached this with some trepidation; I had last been on a bike about 15 years ago. I just hoped the saying ‘once you’ve learned to ride a bike, you never forget’ was true. I needn’t have worried. After a wobbly few moments getting the hang of it again on the pavement in front of the Downtown bike shop, I joined the rest of the group and off we went. We were with bike tour provider Urban Adventours, on their City View Tour, so over 2.5 hours we covered a lot of ground, much quicker than we would do on foot. Within moments I was thinking ‘wow, I’m cycling in Boston, and it’s Sunday’. It’s a fabulous city to cycle round, with dedicated cycle lanes. Admittedly it was Sunday, so the roads were quiet, but our 2 friendly cycle guides made sure we weren’t left behind and we stopped frequently so they could explain the history of the sites we were looking at. Not all of it was on road, some of the tour was along the Charles River esplanade, and through some of the city’s green spaces. We were there a week before the Boston marathon, so we encountered lots of people running the same routes in preparation for their big event. Over the 10 or so miles we were able to have a fabulous introduction to the character of the different communities that we cycled through, only possible on a bike. From Downtown we quickly reached the North End, Boston’s oldest residential Italian neighbourhood. We passed through Boston University Campus (those hotdogs smelled great) on our way to the historic Fenway Park, home of Boston Red Sox. We saw Copley Square with the John Hancock Building, Boston Common where trees were coming out in full bloom, and it felt like a real party atmosphere as we looped around the Long Wharf before coming back to our start point. Apart from a sore bottom, I can really recommend a cycle tour of Boston to give you a great introduction to the city. It was a real blast, and for me one of the best parts of the 4 days away. What we didn’t do on the bike, we then explored on foot. That’s the great thing about Boston, it’s a really manageable city on bike or on foot. Lunch in Quincy Market, a walk past Massachusetts State House, and a beer in the pub that was the base for the ‘Cheers’ tv series. This was before a quick freshen up back at our luxury hotel Four Seasons before taking a seat at ‘The Blue Man’ show. This was really something else –created by the same team behind ‘Cirque de Soleil’, it literally was a show by 3 bald blue painted men who kept us entertained just by music, mime and surprises. Expect some audience participation! If you fancy a trip to Boston, get in touch and I’ll put together a city break, or a longer tour which can combine New York and Cape Cod, or how about New England in the Fall? There are endless possibilities.

A relaxing family weekend

12 October 2018

Two luxury lodges for my husband's family gathering to celebrate his 60th seemed the ideal solution. In total we were 6 adults and 1 dog. It worked perfectly with hubby and I in one lodge, and his grown-up kids and partners and Jack the dog in the other. Each had its own outdoor hot tub, and individual parking places directly in front. The lodges were situated within walking distance of the very full Aysgarth Falls in the Yorkshire Dales. Also, within easy driving distance were the village of Hawes, renowned for the Wensleydale Creamery (there was a cheese festival on when we were there), UNESCO World Heritage sites of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, and the wonderful cathedral city of Ripon. We were just there 2 nights (Friday - Sunday), but it was enough time to explore the local area, enjoy the hot tub, and feel rejuvenated at the end of the weekend. The lodges were part of the Aysgarth Lodge site, with its own pub/restaurant, children's playground and petting farm. The staff were very pleasant and the food good. Knowing there was a pub on site meant that we didn't have to take lots of food with us.

Cyprus Delights

15 June 2018

Last week I exchanged my view of my garden for the turquoise blue Mediterranean Sea surrounding Cyprus. From Monday to Friday there wasn't a cloud in the sky. There are many reasons why Cyprus should be on your bucket list, not least because it's a year-round destination with 326 days of sunshine per year. What's not to like about that? The food is delicious with fresh seafood, Greek salad and mezze type meals. It's ideal for winter sun when it's a bit cooler (peak season temperatures can reach up to 42 degrees in the shade). Even last week it reached 37 degrees in Paphos (in May). It's 4.5 hours flying time from the UK and 2 hours ahead, so no jet lag as such. Things happen according to Cypriot time, so the whole experience is really laid-back. Did you know that Ayia Napa became famous during the 80s purely as a result of the war of 1974 between the north and south of the island? Before this, all the tourists headed to Famagusta, which at the outbreak of war became derelict. All the hoteliers moved to Ayia Napa, the closest resort area to the buffer zone. What was a quiet fishing village became the most popular resort in Cyprus, and still is today, but with a different feel compared to the 1980s. There are hotels for all budget levels, and the town of Ayia Napa is now much loved with couples, families and older people who delight in the wonderful views overlooking Nissi Bay. The Greek Orthodox church and the Maritime museum provide some cultural escape from the sun worship. Close by is the quieter resort of Protaras, and Cape Greco, a rocky headland where locals go diving. Further along the coast is the resort of Limassol offering a renovated marina area and some luxury hotels. The old town has some interesting archaeology. Away from the beaches and luxury resorts, Cyprus offers a wealth of cultural and foodie activities. Wine tasting, bread making in the delightful village of Omodos, the archaeological site of Curium, and scenic Aphrodite's birthplace to name but a few. Hiking, horse-riding, olive and orange picking are all on offer in the right season. Paphos (Cultural City of Europe 2017) has many attractions, the touristy harbour and hotels with beautiful infinity pools, a Unesco listed archaeological site with mosaics dating back to 2nd BC and undiscovered Paphos with interesting street art. Away from the large resorts, there are quieter villages in Cyprus where you can experience the real Cyprus. In the Tochni village, you can stay in a one-bedroom apartment with a shared pool, meals are taken in the local taverna. The food is delicious. Equidistant between Larnaca, Ayia Napa, the Troodos mountains, with a hire car you can explore all that this Mediterranean island has to offer. You can join the villagers to harvest the olives or oranges, and there are some great wineries in the area. Get in touch and I can help you plan your ideal holiday in Cyprus, whether it is in a luxury hotel in Protaras, Limassol or Paphos, or in a traditional village where you can take more than just a suntan home with you.

A Colombian Adventure

02 February 2018

High capitals Bogota, the capital, is a lofty 2600m above sea-level. My hotel was in a superb location to explore Bogota and the surrounding area. Byron, a local city guide, walked us round La Candelaria district, the cobbled historical quarter, home to preserved colonial buildings, the Plaza de Bolivar, the Gold Museum and Botero Museum. I quickly got up to speed on the Spanish colonial era, the importance of gold in Colombia and the chubby specialism of local artist Botero. A cable car ride took us to Cerro Monserrate (3200m) for the bird’s eye view of this huge city – it was a revelation to see the urban sprawl down below us. church on the summit of Monserrate draws pilgrims and tourists alike, largely because of the 17th century statue of the Fallen Christ. A walk through tropical gardens passing the 14 Stations of the Cross led us back down to the cable car station. Flowers, food and salt A visit to Paloquemao market brought renewed energy with the sweet smell of thousands of flowers filling the air. There were roses of every possible shade of pink and red, freesias, lilies. Inside the busy market hall, people were going about their daily business selling fruit and vegetables, meat, fish and household goods. Who knew that there were white potatoes with red stripes and twisted like a helter-skelter? We tasted arepas (ground maize flatbread), empanadas (fried stuffed pastries), and tropical fruit native to Colombia, such as lulo, uchuwa, zapote. Next, we headed to the Zipaquira Salt Cathedral. This structure carved entirely out of salt is only one of three in the entire world, the other two being in Poland. Mesmerising colours of blues and reds drew me deep into the vast underground space, until I reached the grand finale of the nave and its colossal cross. Zona Cafetera, hummingbirds and a remote hacienda The next week was spent travelling around the mountainous regions of Quindio, Risaralda, and Caldas, fanning out like spokes on a wheel from the town of Manizales. The area is renowned for its coffee culture, the cloud forest with its tropical birds and animals, and outstanding landscapes and scenery. My absolute highlight of this part of the tour had to be the early morning nature walk through the Otun Quimbaya national park in search of howler monkeys and excellent bird life including the rare and endemic Cauca Guan and the Red-ruffed Fruitcrow – I saw all three. The canopy of trees above my head was a perfect playground for the orange howler monkey and its family. I heard them before I saw them, and spent moments watching them as they played and scampered in the dawn light. Listening to the call of the birds in the early morning was indeed magical. If you’re lucky, you may spot a tapir. Accommodation during the week is split between colourful Salento, the Otun-Quimbaya national park, and a privately owned remote farmhouse hacienda with its own outdoor thermal hot pool and horse riding possibilities. Caribbean influences and indigenous tribes So far, each day had been so different and exciting with new experiences, but I still had a few more days in this intriguing country. I flew to Cartagena on the Caribbean coast. Another first for me, I had never stood on a Caribbean beach and watched the waves lapping up onto the shore. The heat and humidity on the coast and inland in this part of Colombia was quite a contrast to the cooler climates experienced in Bogota and the area around Manizales. Cartagena is a lively UNESCO listed World Heritage site, it's where the peace deal was signed between the government and the FARC rebels. New meets old in this city of two halves, with the Boca Grande and its high-rise apartment blocks visible from the ramparts of the old fortress. The final stop of the tour was a 4-hour drive east along the coast, at the Playa Koralia beach hotel and close to the Tayrona National Park. Bedrooms are in individual straw huts, set within the tropical hotel grounds, each with hammocks, mosquito nets and outside bathrooms but within a private wall. Both the bar and the dining room are steps away from the beach and the Caribbean. Squirrels and iguanas can be seen in the grounds, and the sounds of the cicadas and other nocturnal animals can be heard long into the night. Early the next morning, we met our guide and set off on our walk through the Tayrona National Park. The Tayrona National Park straddles both the coast and forest covered mountains and is home to some 56 endangered species. Tamarind and howler monkeys were visible but the numbers of people walking along the trail meant that many others, including poisonous snakes (phew) were not on show that day. We followed a track which took us up through the tropical rainforest with a detour to visit a Kogi indigenous tribal village, a world away from the modern one I inhabited. Straw huts, and pure white clothing, no modern conveniences. Kogi are the last surviving world of the Inca and the Aztecs, direct descendents of the Tairona culture who built lots of stone structure and pathways in the forest. I also spotted a Coca tree, innocuous in itself without added chemicals to create the destructive cocaine, but the Kogi chew the coca leaves to keep them going for hours on end at high altitude. Further along we came to the Pueblito, where remains of more than 500 dwellings have been discovered, further proof of an early civilisation in this coastal area. Colombia did not disappoint, it delivered in more ways than I expected it to with a diversity and variety of landscape and culture that I had not anticipated. It certainly is magical, and it is very real, but in an unpolished kind of way. What’s more, I would now put Colombia in my top 5 favourite countries ever visited – go and see for yourself.

We were very lucky to have Jane Sedgwick recommended to us. From the first phone call her customer service was first class. She listened to what we wanted and came up with great suggestions. One of which we took up. Not only did Jane keep us updated constantly with any changes that were happening, she came personally to meet us and bring us our paperwork. We had an amazing holiday, finished off with a lovely surprise gift from Jane. So very thoughtful. I cannot recommend Jane highly enough. She goes the extra mile and her customer service really is fantastic. Happy to recommend Jane, and already have.

Where do I start! I have booked with Jane both times to go to South Africa and both times in the middle of a pandemic. I have always booked my own travel previously and I decided to book through Jane on my first trip as she is the professional and would assist me should I need it. Well – little did I know how much assistance Jane would be providing me going forward. On my second trip the journey to SA went relatively smoothly – however Jane had her work cut out getting me back from SA being a ‘Red Country’. I have just enjoyed an 11 night stay in Rhodes, via Ethiopia, missing flights due to delays etc – oh yes and did I mention that Jane even sent me all the links as I need an Emergency Passport at the British Embassy in Pretoria due to new EU regulations etc. It has been a whirl wind trip and one I will never forget. Jane goes over and beyond for her customers and even took my phone call early hours in the morning when I missed a flight. I would not travel any other way in future other than through Jane, Travel Counsellors. You are the absolute BEST and thank you from the bottom of my heart

Sent by Kenneth Bray

Jane has managed our holiday requests very professionally, courteously and promptly. She will always be our first choice for making arrangements for holidays.

I would highly recommend her services for complete peace of mind, competitive pricing and phenomenal service.

Jane uses her knowledge and experience to make suggestions that further enhance your holiday. For example for us that included a cookery class in Delhi; something we wouldn’t have thought of but something that added so much to our experience.

A huge thank you Jane for organising our amazing trip to India. I can't single out one fabulous bit because it was all fabulous. When we had one small problem due to mechanical problem on an internal flight and thought we would miss our connection home the local support swung into action and we were presented with alternatives to make sure we didn't miss our flight. In the end this wasn't needed. It really was a trip of a lifetime! Thank you.

Jane kept us updated, sorted out hotel accommodation for a further 2 nights bed, breakfast and evening meal paid for directly by easy Jet !! & got us flights home on the Saturday from Malaga. Having seen the chaos at Granada airport with over 100 people trying to get new flights we consider ourselves very lucky to have had Jane sorting everything out. Asked Jane to find a catered chalet ski holiday for myself and my husband in January. Suggested La Villa in the Dolomites. Just to make the booking more complicated my daughter decided to join us in late October and then my son in mid December. Jane sorted it all. We had a great holiday and a lovely welcome home present. If you are too busy with living your life let Jane sort your holiday. We will definitely use Jane again

Thank you for the parcel from Betty’s that arrived today. It’s one of our favourite tea shops. Our trip to Belgium was most enjoyable. All the arrangements worked fine, although we were amazed that we didn’t have to show any tickets on the internal train journeys - all that printing you did turned out to be unnecessary. I wonder if they ever do any spot checks. The only potential problem was that Brussels Midi station has a completely different name in Flemish, and we might have got off at the wrong stop on the way back from Ghent, but we worked out where we were just in time. That’s the problem with a country that has two languages, one of which is incomprehensible! Both hotels were good. The one in Ghent had more character and was particularly well located for all the sights. The Antwerp one was more of a business hotel, but perfectly comfortable and very convenient for the station.

I’ve just recently booked a short trip with Jane. It was so easy and convenient to do it this way, just say what you’re looking for, Jane had a few questions and then a couple of options were given to us. Will definitely book again this way. Highly recommend Jane and Travel Counsellors

We just wanted to touch base with you and let you know that we have just had the most perfect holilday thanks to you. We had a ball in Sri Lanka and we want to go back. Everything worked like clockwork, England won the test. The hotel was in such a wonderful location, and it was great to have the room available all day on our final day. All the extra touches have made it so special and personal, including the welcome home chocolates. Thank you, we really are most exceptionally grateful.

I found Jane super friendly and she put me at ease completely, I knew I could just leave it with her to sort out a trip to New York, with my family. It was so nice just giving a few details then left Jane to it. Feel proper looked after.

Argentina is a great place to visit. I'd thoroughly recommend it. Such varied scenery and experiences. From glaciers and overwhelmingly big waterfalls to deserts and multicoloured mountains. And then there's Buenos Aires. We never did make it to a tango club but on the last night a singer and guitarist strolled into the cafe we were in and treated us to a few tango songs. We loved all the little cafes and 'restobars' - cheap and cheerful and full of character. And if you do want to go there (or anywhere else for that matter) we can recommend getting Jane Sedgwick to organise it for you. Everything worked perfectly smoothly and we were fully supported all the way

Jane listened to what we wanted, and our changing requirements, and patiently fully met those requirements for us.

Managed to find what seems to be the perfect location for our self-catering holiday in Southern Ireland so saving me much time surfing the net. We are looking forward to our holiday very much and hope it lives up to expectations.
