Our adventure in the Snow!
The Arctic Snow Hotel and Glass Igloos, Rovaniemi, Finland
The most amazing 2 days in beautiful Finnish Lapland
Our adventure started with an early flight from Stansted to Rovaniemi, after only a 3 and a half hour journey, we landed in a breath taking winter wonderland!
We pre arranged a snowmobile excursion, so we took a taxi straight to the meeting point in the City, where we met the rest of our group and were given safety gear, we were all taken to the nearby snowmobile meeting point, which was near Santa's Village, we decided to share a snowmobile and my hubby drove, the guide took us on a fantastic woodland track, through snow covered trees, it was such a brilliant experience!
After our excursion we headed for the Arctic Snow Hotel and Glass Igloo 's, which was 30 minutes drive outside the City, in a village called Sinetta, we checked in and shown to our amazing Glass Igloo, with 360 degree views of the sky it was absolutely stunning, we had adjustable beds, a private bathroom with shower, it was fully heated, robes and slippers and plenty of refreshments, which was laid out for us when we arrived.
There was a choice of 3 restaurant's, the ice restaurant situated in the ice hotel, the Kota restaurant with an open fire and a buffet restaurant in the main hotel building.
We decided to have dinner in the Kota restaurant which was in an annex on the hotel's grounds, near the Glass Igloo's, it had its own bar upstairs called the sky bar, which also had a glass roof, with stunning views of the sunset. The menu was all locally produced, which you pre ordered, we had 3 courses and thoroughly enjoyed each course, the large open fire was a real treat after an afternoon in the snow.
After dinner we headed for the sauna and had a late night private Finnish Sauna experience, which was out of this world and well worth booking!
During our session we were given towels, robes and slippers, and had use of the traditional wooden sauna which I love, before going across the the snow hotel where we had the use of their unique snow sauna, which is completely made out of snow and has a hot stove in the middle creating snow steam, this was such a unique experience and was absolutely amazing! we stayed in there a lot longer than we initially thought, the last session was the heated outdoor jacuzzi which had stunning views of the midnight sky, the staff gave us a couple of glasses of fizz and bottles of beer and we were left to enjoy the stars.
After a very comfortable night in our glass igloo, we headed for the buffet restaurant for breakfast, giving us the morning to explore the snow hotel, it had a huge selection of different room types, all decorated with ice sculptors, different colour lighting and wall carvings, the huge ice restaurant all with different themed decorations and ice carvings, they even had an ice chapel where they perform wedding ceremonies, it was all very magical, including an amazing ice bar, where we sampled some of the local spirits all served in ice glasses.
The hotel was situated beside a huge lake that was completely frozen in the winter months, the views were stunning and they had activities available, such as Kick sledging and snow tobogganing , which my hubby was very keen to do a few times!
The highlight of the day was the Snowshoeing excursion which we booked with the hotel, the guide took us up to the forest using snowshoes, which hook onto your snow boots, it allows you to walk through deep snow, we had so much fun walking up to the top, the views were stunning and there was a campfire set up, where we cooked Finnish sausages and had a hot drink, to warm us up before our final trek back to the hotel.
We truly had a magical time in Finish Lapland and would love to return one day!
