Magical Thailand!
From the moment we arrived in Phuket, Thailand felt like pure magic: golden temples glowing in the sun, the soft crash of waves at dusk, the smell of sizzling street food drifting through the night. It is one of those places that gets under your skin in the best possible way.
We based ourselves at the Ramada Phuket Southsea on Karon Beach, an ideal spot if you love to be close to everything but still want that relaxing, beachy feel. Step outside and you are just a short stroll from lively bars, local restaurants, markets and little shops packed with colourful clothes and trinkets. Cross the road and you are straight onto Karon’s long stretch of soft sand, perfect for sunrise walks, lazy days on a lounger or watching those famously fiery Thai sunsets.
We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis, which I would absolutely recommend for Thailand. Breakfast at the hotel sets you up for the day, then you are free to follow your nose each evening. There are so many fantastic places to eat and drink: tiny family-run spots serving fragrant curries, beachside bars with live music, sizzling street stalls where you can grab a plate of pad thai or fresh seafood for a few pounds. Half the fun is trying somewhere new every night.
Getting around is part of the adventure. Tuk tuks are everywhere: brightly lit, music playing, drivers ready with a smile and a suggestion. They are very affordable, and there is something wonderfully carefree about hopping in, giving the driver a landmark and whizzing off into the warm night air.
From Karon, it is really easy to explore. Patong Beach is about 15 minutes away by tuk tuk or taxi if you are in the mood for neon lights, buzzing nightlife and a huge choice of bars and entertainment. The famous Big Buddha, watching serenely over the island, is around 20 minutes away. The drive up offers beautiful views, and at the top you are rewarded with a peaceful, spiritual atmosphere and sweeping panoramas across Phuket.
Phuket Town itself is around 30 minutes away and is an absolute must for an evening out. The streets come alive after dark with music, dancing, street food and a great mix of quirky bars and lively shows. Wander through the night markets and you will find everything from handmade jewellery and clothes to souvenirs and delicious snacks. It is busy, colourful and full of character. Do not forget to haggle at the markets, it is all part of the fun and the locals expect it.
One of the absolute highlights was getting out onto the water. The port is roughly 15 minutes away and from there you can join one of the many boat trips out to the surrounding islands. A visit to Phi Phi is non-negotiable in my opinion. The water is an unreal shade of turquoise and crystal-clear, perfect for swimming and snorkelling. Being out at sea, surrounded by those dramatic limestone cliffs and hidden coves, feels like stepping into a postcard.
You can also visit the famous beach made iconic by Leonardo DiCaprio’s film “The Beach”. Seeing it in real life, with its sheer cliffs and dazzling water, is one of those pinch-me travel moments you will never forget.
If you prefer, you can even arrange for a tuk tuk or driver to take you out for the day. For a small fee, they will ferry you between viewpoints, temples, beaches and local villages and share tips and stories along the way. It is an easy, relaxed way to pack a lot into your time on the island.
I could go on and on, because Thailand is one of those destinations that offers something new every day: peaceful temples, buzzing nightlife, world-class beaches, incredible food, friendly locals and so much colour and culture at every turn. Even the most seasoned travellers find themselves falling in love with it.
