Rome - The Eternal City

Rome is the city I return to again and again. With my aunt living there, it has become woven into so many chapters of my life: family holidays, weekends with friends, a romantic escape and now special trips with my daughter. In this blog I share a little glimpse into our most recent visit in February 2025, and why Rome continues to feel so magical no matter how many times I go back.
I have honestly lost count of how many times I have been to
Rome. With my aunt living there, the city has become a kind of second home. I
have visited with my parents, with friends, with an ex-boyfriend and, most
recently, twice with my daughter. Each trip has had a different flavour, but
the same conclusion: Rome is truly magical.
Our last visit was in February 2025, a gorgeous time to be there: cooler temperatures, softer light and fewer crowds. Our days were spent wandering the streets and soaking up the sights and sounds of the Eternal City. Rome is a place that really rewards slow travel: turning down side streets, pausing at little piazzas, listening to church bells and street musicians, and allowing the history to reveal itself corner by corner.
We met up with my aunt (and her little dog) for lazy lunches, shopping and a visit to the beautiful Doria Pamphilj Gallery, a real gem filled with art, gilded rooms and family history. After our time together, my daughter and I would head off on our own adventures again, discovering new corners of the city that somehow I had never noticed on earlier trips.
There was, of course, a lot of gelato involved. In between the sights, we happily worked our way through scoops of ice cream, slices of pizza, bowls of pasta and the occasional Aperol Spritz. Rome is a city where eating is part of the sightseeing, and every café terrace feels like a front-row seat on everyday Roman life.
We stayed in a lovely little guest house near the Spanish Steps, which was the perfect base. Being able to stroll out in the evening, wander around the Trinità dei Monti area and slip back easily to our room made everything feel effortless and relaxed.
Two evenings stand out in particular. We spent them at the rooftop bar of the Rinascente department store, enjoying wonderful views over the Roman skyline as the sun went down and the city lights began to glow. Watching domes and rooftops stretch out in every direction, drink in hand, felt like a perfect summary of why I keep returning: Rome always manages to be both grand and intimate at the same time.
