Epic Freedom: A Three‑Week Retirement Road Trip Through New Zealand
A 3-Week North and South Island Self-Drive Itinerary for First-Time Visitors
Three weeks, two newly retired adventurers and one extraordinary country at the edge of the world: this New Zealand road trip was an absolute joy to design. With a continuous hire car from Auckland to Greymouth (even hitching a ride with us on the ferry between islands), the route stitches together cool little cities, steaming geothermal valleys, Art Deco seaside towns, wine country, wildlife-packed coasts, fiords, glaciers and some of the most spectacular train and driving scenery you can imagine. In this blog I share our March itinerary in full, from Auckland all the way around to Christchurch via Abel Tasman, Kaikoura, Fiordland and Queenstown, along with the driving distances, snippets of history and the odd fun statistic to bring this epic retirement adventure to life.
Three weeks, two newly retired adventurers and one extraordinary country at the edge of the world: if you are going to celebrate new-found freedom, a New Zealand road trip in March takes some beating. With one trusty hire car from Auckland to Greymouth (which even joined them on the ferry), their route stitched together cool little cities, steaming geothermal valleys, Art Deco seaside gems, wine-soaked valleys, wildlife-packed coasts, fiords, glaciers and one of the world’s great train journeys.
They kicked off with 2 nights in Auckland, the “City of Sails”, before heading south via Matamata to Rotorua for 3 nights of geysers, hot pools and spine-tingling Māori storytelling, then on to Taupo’s vast volcanic lake and Napier’s time-warp Art Deco streets. After a coastal swoop to creative, coffee-fuelled Wellington and a breezy ferry crossing into the Marlborough Sounds, the South Island turned the drama up a notch: golden beaches and turquoise bays in Abel Tasman from their base in Motueka, long lunches amid Marlborough vines in Blenheim, and jaw-dropping marine encounters in Kaikoura where whales, dolphins and albatross all come to feast.
Christchurch gave them a night in a city reinventing itself, then the road unspooled south through big-sky countryside to Dunedin’s Scottish swagger and the wildlife-thick Otago Peninsula. From there they dived into Fiordland with 2 nights in Te Anau, trading streetlights for star-filled skies and cruising through glacier-carved sounds that feel like the end of the earth.
Four nights in Queenstown dialled the energy back up again, whether they chose bungy jumps and jet boats or simply lakefront strolls and world-class Pinot Noir. Wanaka’s laid-back charm and lakeside trails were the perfect palate cleanser before the scenery amped up yet again over the Haast Pass to Franz Josef, where a glacier tumbles down towards lush rainforest in one of the planet’s stranger double acts.
Finally, they rolled into Greymouth, swapped wheels for rails and let the TranzAlpine carry them back across the Southern Alps and Canterbury Plains to Christchurch for a last 2 nights. By the time they boarded the flight home, they had clocked up volcano craters and vineyard terraces, penguin colonies and glow-worm caves, hairpin passes and mirror-calm lakes: proof that New Zealand really does pack a whole world’s worth of adventure into one epic retirement road trip.
